I just put forks, knives & teaspoons all together. I no longer can be arsed to sort them. I put the spatulas etc in a jar by the cooker.

Aibu?

Nanny0gg, you're basing it on the assumption that everyone is right handed though. We're all right handed in this house, but husband eats (and plays snooker) left handed for some reason. So by your reasoning, the correct layout (k, f, s) is perfect for him. But who walks from the cutlery drawer to the table with the cutlery poised perfectly in their hands anyway? Surely you just grab it and then sort it all out when you get there. Especially if you have multiple sets to lay!

I may be far too invested in this.

Keeptrudging · 02/10/2018 19:15

I stand with Nanny Ogg, it's the order in which you lay them. I'm palpitating at the thought of all these disordered drawers.Shock

MollysMummy2010 · 02/10/2018 19:16

I honestly live in a flat that does not have any drawers in the kitchen! I didn’t notice until we moved in and I was totally thrown. Six years later and we have our cutlery in a caddy thing and my Dh does not understand my system... daily pain!

SausageOnAFork · 02/10/2018 19:18

I lived in a house a while ago with no drawers in the tiny kitchen. I kept the cutlery in a small drawer in a sideboard. It was too small for any kind of cutlery tray. So I just chucked everything in there.

No one died.

No drawers in a kitchen?! Stares bravely into the middle distance..

FaithHopeAndSkulduggery · 02/10/2018 19:19

For the sake of full disclosure, my mum bought me a fancy cutlery 100 piece set with fish knives, oyster forks or whatever, cake servers etc. Those stay in a drawer with dividers because we only use them once a year. The daily stuff is bunged together.

Try it. You might find you like it.

That said, this is my kitchen drawer now.

YABU. You maniac. This gave me palpitations

derxa · 02/10/2018 19:23

I'm the laziest person in the known universe but this has shocked me to the core. You're a slattern OP Grin

It was the tiniest kitchen, no room for drawers. There was only one floor level cupboard that wasn’t the one under the sink. Floor level I had cupboard, oven, fridge, then over the other side, washing machine, sink. There were only two wall level cupboards.

Now I have pan drawers.

ConcreteUnderpants · 02/10/2018 19:25

Excellent, Sausage. A drawer of envy.
Although my clip it things are kept with my bags and kitchen foil.

Are people saying they hold their forks in their right hand and knife in their left?
WTAF? This must be a dream / horrid nightmare.

Serialweightwatcher · 02/10/2018 19:30

I fill my drawers full of spatulas, gadgets etc etc (far too many to go in a container on worktop) so have now put all knives, forks and dessert spoons in one of those metal containers with holes on worktop and teaspoons and cake forks in a glass coffee cup/mug next to them

So you say

A well-ordered cutlery drawer is what separates us from the brute beasts . . .

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/10/2018 19:39

Envy Envy Envy

CalamityJane10 · 02/10/2018 19:41

But don’t you spend longer every single time you open the drawer trying to find the implements you need? Surely it’s quicker just to sort it upfront?

highheelsandbobblehats · 02/10/2018 19:41

Serial, you have that backwards. Spatulas etc should be in the pot for easy grabbing when cooking (and also because they're bastards that like to jam the drawer shut) and then cutlery in the drawer.

That's it. The world has officially gone mad.

Wetdressinggownsleeve · 02/10/2018 19:43

This is one of the most depraved things I've ever read on the internet.

inmyheadimthequeen · 02/10/2018 19:49

I am open-mouthed at not sorting cutlery or socks. Mine are S.O.R.T.E.D. and my plates and bowls are on divider things so they don't sit on top of each other either. But my second drawer, under the cutlery drawer, is where the spatulas, corkscrew, tin opener etc all live and they are thrown in without a care, higgledy piggledy as you like. Now I feel as if I am living some dort of double life.

Serialweightwatcher · 02/10/2018 19:50

highheelsandbobblehats I've got too many spatulas, metal spoons, plastic spoons etc etc, so I keep those in the drawer as it's only small and it's much easier for everyone to grab their cutlery from the pot instead of messing the drawer up which they would

MollysMummy2010 · 02/10/2018 19:51

Sausage where do I put my new sideboard in my small galley kitchen? Suggestions very welcome!

rabbitmat · 02/10/2018 19:52

I did this yesterday for the first time in my life! I was in a rush to clear up and just threw them all in. Felt quite crazy! No serious effects so far.

hazell42 · 02/10/2018 19:55

I have been doing this for years. People say that it is a time saver so that they can find what they want
But I say it's one drawer. You just have to use your eyes and select the thing you want. Neat cutlery drawers make me itch. I have a overwhelming urge to slam the drawers really hard to jumble them up again
And I do it.

Oliversmumsarmy · 02/10/2018 20:05

I have never sorted.

I have never had a problem just picking what I needed.
Neither has the family.

There was a programme a few years ago about different personality types
Groups of the same personality groups lived together.
How you arranged the cutlery drawer came up in conversation.

One type just dumped and slammed the drawer whilst another had a conversation about how they stacked the spoons and forks perfectly together.

Wilhelminawonka · 02/10/2018 20:18

But...but...how do you keep the children occupied in the kitchen if they're not sorting the cutlery?
Having them stand out of the way doing that is probably the only thing that stops me tripping over the little beasts while carrying boiling water to the sink.
Won't someone please think of the children!

Fishforclues · 02/10/2018 20:53

I salute you. We lasted less than 2 years in these harrowing circs, then cracked and refitted the kitchen. For the sake of a cutlery drawer!
