I am supposed to react haha! How great is that?! She is, after all, 79 years old.
A donkey can carry up to 100lbs or 7st but my mother is at least double that, probably more.

I don't have a great relationship with my parents. I feel appalled.

The post appears to be someone having a dig at their 80 year old mothers weight. Lovely. What a heart-warming post

Lweji · 30/09/2018 17:52

While 200 lbs (or 100 kg) is probably too much for your average donkey, I find it hard to believe the limit is at 100 lbs either.
Unless it's a very fragile donkey.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 30/09/2018 17:52

I feel so sad for gentle little Donkey's .

Makes me cry hearing Little Donkey every year and think of how appallingly they are treated by many.

Lweji · 30/09/2018 17:54

A quick google says normal weight limit for most donkey rides is 200 lbs (+-100 kg), so it looks like someone has confused lbs with kg.

Ceilingrose · 30/09/2018 17:54

Grow up.

starzig · 30/09/2018 17:56

Hate seeing adults on donkeys for fun no matter what they can technically carry according to google.

XiCi · 30/09/2018 17:58

Grow up
My thoughts exactly on reading the OP. Pathetic

FittonTower · 30/09/2018 18:00

Giant Andelucian Donkeys are the size and strength of horses. Rode by grown men quite regularly.
Obvioulsy mistreatment of animals is bad and everything but this seems like a bit of an over-reaction to one holiday photo....

ENormaSnob · 30/09/2018 18:01

Tell the donkey-squasher that she is goddamn cruel.

Lweji · 30/09/2018 18:03

We clearly need photographic evidence to be able to judge just how strong the donkey is and how fat the OP's mother is.

Prettyvase · 30/09/2018 18:04

Yes in Petra.

Wish I didn't have such ignorant and stupid members of the family.

OP posts:
NutElla5x · 30/09/2018 18:07

The people telling op to grow up,how about you show a bit of maturity yourselves and maybe go research how these poor animals are treated instead of being so dismissive and rude towards her concerns?

Lweji · 30/09/2018 18:07

BTW, how do you know the weight limit is 100 lbs?

And have they seen a guy in a fedora hat?

Lweji · 30/09/2018 18:10

It's not fair for the OP to call her mother ignorant and stupid either, if she was told she was within official weight limits.
At 79 is not highly likely that she'll be aware of the conditions most of these animals in such countries are treated.
Maybe educate her when she returns home and hope for the best, rather than slate her on a public forum.

Prettyvase · 30/09/2018 18:15

The grow up comment is written by posters who would have no problem with animal cruelty when it comes to " tourist entertainment" and obviously deserves no comment.

Bit like tourists who find it no problem to swim with dolphins in a concrete tank.

Anyway, am so embarrassed. Also on social media.

i have a photo somewhere of my Nan winning a Pontins donkey derby in about 1979. she is wearing a rain mac and has a saucepan on her head.

i hope this helps.

(also when i was small we did a ‘donkey safari’ in Tenerife and we stopped at a bar for refreshments. i went to the loo and when i came back everyone had gone. including my parents and sister and, presumably, a spare donkey. traumatic, to say the least. donkey safaris are shit. i don’t think the donkeys like it much, either.)

1forAll74 · 30/09/2018 18:19

Its quite appalling is this, fat people on donkeys in all that intense heat as well. How does anyone know that a donkey likes the idea of having people on its back ? Tourists, making money,, all so wrong.

whatwouldkeithRichardsdo2 · 30/09/2018 18:21

I wouldn't reply.

TurfClub · 30/09/2018 18:22

the people responsible for donkey welfare where she is is the local government.

contact them to get this shut down.

not sure trying to teach your mother to suck eggs is helpful though.

Lweji · 30/09/2018 18:24

I don't think the Jordanian government will be too concerned, for some reason.

ForalltheSaints · 30/09/2018 18:25

Contact the cruise company, as if they promoted or in any way encouraged it, they should not be doing this. Or a few tweets to them.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 30/09/2018 18:26

No-one has said that 100lbs is fat or what OP's mother's ideal weight range should be.

She's too big for a donkey though, because most adults are these days. Donkeys should carry a maximum of 20% of their own weight, and just like humans, donkeys vary in height and weight.

The Donkey sanctuary says, "Historically 8 stone (50kg) has been used as a guideline. In reality this should be the maximum load for a fit, larger than average donkey and only when the rider is able to stay balanced and react to the movements of the donkey."

Lweji · 30/09/2018 18:28

Look, OP, your concern for non-human animal welfare is well placed, but you shouldn't forget to show some kindness towards humans, particularly your human mother.

Is it that appaling when you consider her age, her probable (lack of) knowledge about animal welfare issues, and the context?

OfaFrenchmind2 · 30/09/2018 18:31

You must be an absolute peach, and I am sure everyone around you loves you very much...

Donkey are fantastic animals, but they come in various sizes. The big to medium sizes can carry a lot, they are work beasts after all, even if they have a lazy temperament. Of course somebody grossly obese should not ride a medium to small one, but I get the feeling you also wanted to have people talk shit about your mother and enjoy it. that's sleazier than a old lady on a donkey.

TurfClub · 30/09/2018 18:32

"I don't think the Jordanian government will be too concerned, for some reason."

Well it seems more constructive than lecturing your mother about a donkey ride she's already taken.
