To think conspiracy theorists are an infuriating mix of arrogance, stupidity and lazy thinking

EmperorTomatoRetchup · 29/09/2018 21:37

Having thought I'll leave it, I'll leave it, I found myself arguing with a conspiracy theorist.

Christ alight these people are utterly lacking in any sort of critical thought. This tool was trotting out one of the most popular of the conspiracy theories - 911 as an inside job, Madelline McCann was murdered by her parents, moon landings were faked, Diana was bumped off by Mi5 etc. and they seemed to be impervious to any of the logical flaws in their argument, that researching a matter didn't mean watching YouTube videos made by fellow conspiricists spouting unsourced, unreferenced nonsense and claiming that non adherents were 'sheeple' buying 'the official line'.

To take the example jokingly referenced on another thread, the Paul McCartney is dead conspiracy theory, how many people coroners, doctors ambulance staff, Paul's family and friends, would have had to be bought off in order to allow him to be replaced by a lookalike who could be trained to speak, act, play musical instruments left handed and pass for one of the world's most famous men in the full glare of the media . In 50 years not a single person involved in this dastardly plan, not a single one of this vast army of people cooped into it has blown the whistle despite their being unparalleled financial rewards for doing so.

No musicologists have detected a change in composition or playing or singing style. No one asking what happened to the bloke who became fake Paul', might their family not be curious as to why their son/brother disappeared off the face of the earth in the late 60s.After going to such extraordinary lengths the Beatles so desperate to cover up this audacious act, left a series of clues in their songs as a signal to their fans.

AIBU to think that this combination of scepticism, lack of critical thought, logic, probability twinned with overwhelming arrogance is infuriating and wonder how I should deal with these fuckers in future? Especially when any attempts to point out the flaws in their arguments are taken as signs you are one of the sheeple or a Co conspirator.

There's a good podcast where people come on with their conspiracy theories and have to defend them to the host.

Raven88 · 30/09/2018 20:45

@straightjeans what's it called, sounds interesting.

longwayoff · 30/09/2018 20:50

Five families? Please share.

Seniorcitizen1 · 30/09/2018 20:52

When I was watching the first “moon landing” in 1969 aged 12 I told my mother that it was fake filmed in a hollywood studio. I don’t remember this but she did. Not seen any evidence to disprove my initial thought

user1457017537 · 30/09/2018 20:55

SeniorCitizen1 I can remember my grandad saying the same thing. I clearly remember watching the moon landings with him and him saying it was filmed in a studio

brokenharbour · 30/09/2018 21:05

At one time Harry was third in line to the throne. I'm sure they must have done a DNA test of they were in any doubt at all. Although maybe they did and we'll never know now it's extremely unlikely he'll get anywhere the throne.

Well case closed then!

Unless your grandfather was an astrophysicsist, how would he know what the surface of the moon looked like?

The moon landing conspiracy has been debunked many many times over.

They really did go to the Moon..
I think you can even get a telescope yourself and look up and see things they left there . Mirrors and what not.

Hanyu · 30/09/2018 21:23

I seem to remember when they were DNA testing to prove the identity of Richard III, they found there was a break in the royal lineage, which kind of makes you wonder what the point of it all is anyway.

Re: Kincora, there have been multiple accusations from multiple sources of a high-level sex ring that was sanctioned by MI5 at Kincora's Boy's home. The official line is that it never happened. There is certainly good reason to suspect a high-level cover up. There have also been many rumours from many sources about Lord Mountbatten's sexuality and his preference for teenage boys. As I said, I don't know if Paul Maxwell was a victim, it just seems interesting to me that a working class teenage boy was found in the presence of a man who was alleged to enjoy having sex with working class teenage boys. I also find it odd that if Lord Mountbatten was looking for help on his boat, he would hire a 15-year-old boy to work from him.

Pissedoffdotcom · 30/09/2018 21:29

Come on, everybody knows the moon is made of cheese. Wallace & Grommit said so...

AssignedNorthernAtBirth · 30/09/2018 21:37

I don't know anything much about boats. Why would it be odd to hire a 15 year old for whatever boating assistance was needed?

user1457017537 · 30/09/2018 21:38

Wow!
What I find strange is that having walked on the moon supposedly, no further progress was made and the space program was I think abandoned after a couple of years.

longwayoff · 30/09/2018 21:39

The child abuse enquiry is still sitting. I dont know whether Kincora is included. I would say though, regardless of Mountbatten's proclivities, of which I know nothing, hiring a young teen to help out in shops, stables, cafes, deckhand, etc was not remotely unusual. Most kids from about 13 onwards would find a little job to supplement a weekly allowance. Character forming etc.

Lweji · 30/09/2018 21:43

the space program was I think abandoned after a couple of years.

The space programme is still going on. Did you miss the entire Space Shuttle, the probes to other planets (and to the Moon), along with the International Space Station?

The thing is that putting people on the Moon was mostly about muscle display and the cold war. The rest of the space exploration that has been going on is far more interesting, and has been achieved by robots rather than endagering humans.

user1457017537 · 30/09/2018 21:43

Longwayoff yes, I understand young teenagers did work for pocket money in the past. However, Lord Mountbatten as a member of the Royal family would gave had lots of staff and family retainers working for him and his family

straightjeans · 30/09/2018 21:43

@Raven88 Lizard People. It's more of a comedy podcast, so you aren't burdened with people who are super serious about it.

user1457017537 · 30/09/2018 21:45

But it seemed that once putting a man on the moon at great cost was achieved, it was then abandoned. You must also concede that there were plans for people to travel in space which have also come to nothing.

@straightjeans thanks.

longwayoff · 30/09/2018 21:54

Its is a common belief that there was just the 1969 moon landing and no others. I suppose its because its the most well known.

longwayoff · 30/09/2018 22:09

Thanks Raven just had a quick look. I wasnt aware these people had been amalgamated into one world threat. You may want to make yourself more fully aware of where such beliefs about the first two families were developed and publicised before committing more fully to what is said.

Deadbudgie · 30/09/2018 22:09

I think the jfk conspiracy theorists are completely credible. The MM story is as fishy as fuck! The rest who know? Some situations are more dubious than others

KlutzyDraconequus · 30/09/2018 22:13

Some people believe there's liens on the moon that warned us off exploring. That's why they don't land there by more.
