@ivegotatheoryitcouldbebunnies1

The only "influencer" I remember slating is CC, and I stand by what I said about her. I won't go into it or the thread will most likely be deleted.

I don't know MOD or any of the others associated with her, I don't know any "instamums" at all. I don't have a public insta account. I follow most of the people mentioned on these threads and as I've said all along the use or not of #ad, gift, sponsored etc. doesn't bother me. It bothers me when someone I've followed starts promoting brands that I feel they never actually buy but then I just unfollow.

IWishIHadEvenMorePlasticTat · 06/10/2018 14:33

Some of these instamums have followings bigger than the circulation of some magazines. I see them as a cross between media owners, with the same rights and responsibilities, and reality celebrities.

So it strikes me as really odd and disingenuous when any criticism and dissent is shut down and even censored.

This stuff is put deliberately in the public domain for all to see. I don’t get why it’s not allowed to be commented on. ‘Just unfollow’ isn’t a satisfactory response. I don’t read Cosmopolitan mag either, but I can still criticise it for spouting crap on the front cover.

Simply ignoring the things you think are having a wider negative impact on society is not a solution to the problem.

ivegotatheoryitcouldbebunnies1 · 06/10/2018 15:05

@sofialemon yes, it’s not lost on me that one that you’re happy to bash is an account that MoD has issues with.

visitorthedog · 06/10/2018 15:22

I’m thinking of turning up to Chewton Glen as it seems nobody pays to go there 😂

nipersvest · 06/10/2018 15:29

I think the safest way to enter instagram nowadays is to just presume everything is gifted, its all an 'ad' and all links are affiliate ('cept Zara, they don't do affiliate links!)

Anne Marie from CatwalkSchoolgates had a rant yesterday on stories about the influencer lunches/brunches/nights away, in a 'stop treating influencers to yet another freebie cashmere jumper, give out a discount code instead' way.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 06/10/2018 15:39

That’s true visitordog, it seems to be an insta PR trip haven.

MrBull · 06/10/2018 15:40

These comments about MoD are getting pretty bad again. I know it's a tired old line, but I really do think it would help some of you to unfollow her if she makes you that angry. I just can't get my knickers in a knot about pjs she's said she bought for herself. With their wealth, they're probably proportionate to a M&S pair for most of us.

SpiritLeveller · 06/10/2018 15:43

@nipersvest that’s the best way to approach it and I would say 9/10 times it probably is sponsored. The small (20k) accounts are being gifted a shit load of gear so imagine how much the ones with much bigger followings are getting. It’s not right though. They are treating their followers very shabbily. I do think for many it is intentional because nearly all of them follow influencers who do disclose so they know how it should be done. For many influencers being reported to ASA seems to be the only thing that makes then follow the rules.

ivegotatheoryitcouldbebunnies1 · 06/10/2018 15:47

Yes, I’d be buying £150 PJ’s if I had their money D&D make lovely stuff.

I gave the reason's I don't personally like CC's insta account at the time. I don't give a shit which other "influencers" do or don't like her.

If anyone was getting negative comments about buying some expensive PJ's I'd say the same as what I did. It wasn't a defence of MOD.

I agree with the above. You wouldn't expect Tamara Ecclestone (as an example) to wear Primark PJ's, although I think she wears Victoria's Secret pj's which are cheaper than MOD's new ones.

SpiritLeveller · 06/10/2018 16:00

Tamara Ecclestone is worth hundreds of millions of pounds! Not quite comparable to a midwife, even one with a lucrative influencer second career...

Mightymousie · 06/10/2018 16:20

@spiritleveller Grin so true.

Mightymousie · 06/10/2018 16:23

@sofialemon to be honest I wouldn’t really expect anyone to show off their little treat to themselves in such away, especially if they were so expensive. Wealthy people have far more class. Instawealth is all about the brag.

Sofialemon · 06/10/2018 16:25

@SpiritLeveller

My point is MOD (and a lot of the other instamums) are obviously quite well off and can afford to buy expensive clothes. People on this thread have complained and said it makes them feel annoyed or bad about themselves. But then you have the likes of Tamara, Victoria Beckham, Jools Oliver and many others who are in another league again. Do you think MOD compares herself to Tamara and feels Tamara shouldn't flaunt her wealth?

I have friends who are more well off than me and friends who are really struggling. I don't feel jealous of my well off friends or try to keep up with them or feel I should pretend to be skint to the less well off.

oldgimmer78 · 06/10/2018 16:26

I think the fact that MOD is a midwife is the pull in for most people (pre twins). Midwives are generally thought to be very selfless and poorly paid and I think this in itself influences a lot of the fans to think that she is 'so deserving' of xyz.

The pp who said that for their wealth the pj's are equivalent to M&S. They must be making a serious amount. CB said that she made £50k in 3 months and her following is minuscule compared to the OD's.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 06/10/2018 16:31

Yes, I think the midwifery thing also presents a veneer of trustworthiness which she definitely benefits from where endorsements are concerned. Declared or not.

Mightymousie · 06/10/2018 16:33

People on this thread have complained and said it makes them feel annoyed or bad about themselves.
No, they just thought it took the piss a bit and was out of touch. I wondered if it was me that was not normal but surely 450k people don’t have that level of wealth. You seem awfully defensive when it really doesn’t matter and it’s just an opinion. The point was, she posted her little treat. A few commented.
You just seem to be trying to stir this up. She’s nothing like those you have mentioned although I’ve never seen jools Oliver showing off her pricey pj’s I’ve seen her bring in an affordable range of lovely clothes. For everyone...

MarshaBradyo · 06/10/2018 16:35

I’m surprised at that £50k in three months. Does it really stack up with the numbers? I didn’t see the post about it.

IWishIHadEvenMorePlasticTat · 06/10/2018 16:36

But the instamums are actively targeting people less wealthy than themselves to sell them stuff.

MOD is not positioning herself like a luxury brand is she? She’s not targeting wealthy people. She’s targeting Joanne Bloggs by selling her an impossible fantasy lifestyle.

You talk about her as if she’s just a random woman going about her life (albeit played out in detail on instagram), who just happens to have become really popular and can’t be left in peace these days to buy a pair of PJs.

That’s a very obtuse way to look at it. The whole OD brand has been manufactured to the nth degree. It’s a slick selling vehicle and anything on their feeds should be viewed through a heavy filter of cynicism.

Sofialemon · 06/10/2018 16:36

I suppose MOD's account has moved on, she obviously still works as a midwife but I think only 1 or 2 shifts a week. Even before she became quite so insta famous her and FOD seemed fairly well off. I just assumed FOD had quite a well paid job.

I personally have no interest in the midwifery side of things, or her kids. I just like her stories, fashion and interiors stuff. I find FOD quite amusing.

MarshaBradyo · 06/10/2018 16:39

I don’t follow ‘relatable’ people but I can understand when you start out like that then gradually move on - you’re bound to get posts like the one on the PJ post

MarshaBradyo · 06/10/2018 16:41

As ever though the idea of IG super-kindness is shot to pieces with people pouncing on one comment to defend

Sofialemon · 06/10/2018 16:47

@IWishIHadEvenMorePlasticTat

How is the above true? I don't feel MOD, or any of the similar accounts are actually "targeting" any particular demographic. If anything I'd say they most likely appeal to the higher earning "yummy mummy" types.

I can't see a mum working full time, earning approx £20,000 and struggling to get by relating to any of the "instamums" that get mentioned on here. They might still enjoy following them though.

MarshaBradyo · 06/10/2018 16:49

I don’t think they are actively targeting anyone, but I can imagine a certain demographic follow - and I doubt it’s mostly mc followers - maybe the ones that want to do the same by using engagement to up their own numbers

Peaches100 · 06/10/2018 17:02

Sofia, you keep saying none it really bothers you and you really don't care and yet you have left over 400 posts on the subject.

You do seem very invested.
