Sounds like a PR masterpiece then. We all think the ethos is great, but not sure why Grin

I seem to have blocked selfish mother for some reason. Can’t even remember what the reason was.

EeebyMum · 01/10/2018 09:26

@mightymousue I know, I’m agreeing with you, I was pointing out that regardless of ethics/ethos SM post came from the same tone-deaf privileged place as all the rest of the instamums - ie NSSN saying camping is the same as being homeless, or that other one wanging on about having social housing in Notting Hill or MOD #supportingsmallbusinesses whilst being sponsored by Boden or Philips or Disney World.

MightyMousie · 01/10/2018 10:32

@spiritleveller Grin
@eeebymum it’s astounding!

MrBull · 01/10/2018 10:35

Their costs will be higher if they're a smaller business, but it doesn't necessarily mean the quality of the product or their ethics etc. will be any better (I don't know anything about the brand in question though so not suggesting this in this case). They'll definitely be priced to appeal to a middle class market though, just like Boden, JoJoMB etc.

I do support local businesses where I can to be honest (more so for food), but it's always worth remembering how much the big companies put into the economy too. A LOT of jobs, for a starter. It's not so black and white and I don't agree with a boycott.

This is indeed a great bit of PR for them though. I've seen it shared a few times today. The only reason I heard about them before was because of the ASDA thing.

I also stopped following SM. I love the clothes for charity concept but ultimately the whole business and message screams of priviledge. I don't buy into the 'kitchen table brand' story, this is not something you start without a substantial financial back up and good upfront connections. I'm not saying that she hasn't built a successful business or that she lacks skills (quite the opposite), but it all comes from a very privideldge position and cannot see this being recognised.

sacchetto · 01/10/2018 12:07

ignore the spelling!

EvePolastri · 01/10/2018 12:57

On a different note, MrsMeldrum has really pissed me off today

I've been followed her 'mama's book club' ( yeah, I know!!)

Downloaded and paid for last months book, which I've not started yet

Only for her to proclaim in stories that both her and her fellow instagram followers have found it too dull and have given up on it!

I'm a fool for buying it! But it's spoilt before I've started it now

CadyHeron · 01/10/2018 13:11

Maybe you'll like the book though?! Grin I saw that story this morning. If you're going to buy a book because somebody else has told you to, they're entitled to think it's crap lol. Give it a go anyway instead of being pissed off with her for not liking it. Book tastes are subjective and all that. You might think it's good.

SpiritLeveller · 01/10/2018 13:20

This is why I prefer to always consult Amazon 1* reviews before spending my cash on things Wink

MrBull · 01/10/2018 13:22

Can't say I'm that surprised. She gets tired of things very quickly from what I've seen of past initiatives. Isn't that book club a collab with other instamums though? The heavily monetised accounts like hers (the channel mum ones in particular) are always on the chase for the next trend or fad to share with their followers, increase their followers, earn more money. Cycle repeat. Seems to be a lot of competition to be an early adopter of things. Look how many of them jumped on the Mrs Hinch bandwagon. I know we talk a lot about the effect the instamums have on ordinary mum's mental health but I honestly wonder if the instamums do suffer a bit themselves from the merry go round they're on. That particular instamum reads a lot of books about being happy Hmm

With book clubs though, people aren't going to always like the same thing! Same with RL ones. Somebody upthread said (paraphrasing because on phone and can't scroll up and paste) "reviews are stupid anyway, as if they'd ever be negative about anything so they're hardly a real endorsement!" Now they are negative, said they don't like it and now it's suddenly made you all not like it either. Without even reading it. Confused Grin Sorry but now there's two of you slating it's taking me back to school and it goes like this...
"Jenny's bought the new Sindy and I want one too!" (gets one) "Jenny says she doesn't like her Sindy anymore so neither do I." Grin
Can they win in this situation? Either you want them to be real type reviews and not always positive or you don't.

MrBull · 01/10/2018 13:38

I'm not interested in the book club or even know what the book is. My comment was an observation of how quickly initiatives like that are taken up and then quickly thrown away ready for the next trend.

But A* job again Cady for twisting things to suit your own narrative. Halo

OP posts:
CadyHeron · 01/10/2018 13:41

Fair enough if you don't have the book club or aren't in it. Your post sounded like you were a bit though. Book clubs and books are subjective, surely they're entitled to not like a book?

CadyHeron · 01/10/2018 13:45

It comes down to do you want reviews to be honest or not? Upthread people said they do. Now it seems some don't.
Her story said "it's dull." Now that's hardly positive, is it. Sounds quite honest. If she raved about a product, would people be saying "well they would say that, wouldn't they?!" No win situation.

EvePolastri · 01/10/2018 13:48

Yes cady but it's off putting

I don't care if she doesn't like it, yes I'll read it and see. But she could wait til the nook club love review to give her review, that's the point of it all!!

EeebyMum · 01/10/2018 13:49

Stop twisting @cady.
If someone joins a book club then it’s not unreasonable to think there would be a discussion about said book, not just ‘I gave up cos it’s dull’.
It’s got sweet FA to do with product reviews.

MrBull · 01/10/2018 13:50

They're more than entitled to dislike the book. I don't think that was Eve's point. It's the fact they've given up on it and/or aren't even reading it, but as the instigators of such an initiative surely there should be a commitment for them to at least discuss why they hate it so much with their followers, who have gone to the effort to buy it/read it.

OP posts:
CadyHeron · 01/10/2018 13:52

Why not get involved in the poll? There's an option to say whether you thought it was dull or not. Put your yay or nay out there to it and see which comes out on top.

EvePolastri · 01/10/2018 13:55

cady that's not the review

Mrs m , Charlotte Taylor and one other, think it's Katy Ellison? They do a live review together

This mornings list came after her initial 'I'm giving up on it' post. She's now moved on to the next book which I can't afford really

CadyHeron · 01/10/2018 13:57

Give it a read anyway? I know you were probably looking forward to a live review, but you never know she might have found you one of your new favourite books. Smile Can never have enough books in my opinion!

MrBull · 01/10/2018 13:59

Does a basic poll like that replace actual discussion about the book though? Is that how this book club works @EvePolastri? I've not been following it other than seeing the odd post but having had a glance now it looks like it's supposed to include live weekly chat about the book and that's what they've bailed out on.

OP posts:
SpiritLeveller · 01/10/2018 13:59

All the book club reviews are about creating engagement with followers. Not about reading books.

EeebyMum · 01/10/2018 14:09

No shit @spiritleveller

What’s the meldrums usp? Is this is account where the dad is on it too ala MOFOD

CadyHeron · 01/10/2018 14:13

Are you trying to say is there a Mr Meldrum too? If so, yes pretty sure he has an account too but I don't follow that one.

EvePolastri · 01/10/2018 14:14

mrs meldrum and the others do read. mrs m takes books oh hols etc, so as i haven't read much over past few years i latched on to this club as a starting point. enjoyed the first book, got the second which i'm about to start
