To actually want a labour government

Oopupsideyourhead · 26/09/2018 21:55

As there is a Corbyn bashing thread, I thought I would start an opposing one.

I want a Labour government. I think they offer more of a vision for a fairer country that the current shambolic Tory visionless one.

I want nationalised railways and for the rich corporations to be taxed more to pay for it. I would like to see disabled people treated fairly and not sanctioned and made to live in poverty. I want proper housing regulation for people who rent.

Theresa May pretty much said today in New York that the Uk will become a deregulated tax haven. The NHS will be sold off.

I want labour in power because at the moment they offer some hope an a vision of a different country. The Tories offer nothing but out of touch privileged etonians who want to strip the country bare.

So, aibu?

I don't want a Labour Government..... Not with Corbyn at the helm no. No way will Labour ever get in with him as their leader.

Trouble is, Labour want to give everything to everyone, hand out money we don't have, and bankrupt the country. Conservatives however, keep everyone poor, attack the vulnerable, and only look after the rich.

So they're both shit actually. And because of that, I didn't vote in the last general election.

SillySallySingsSongs · 27/09/2018 10:19

Does anyone else feel that the anti-semitism card

Anti semitism is a real issue. Stop minimising. You are part of the problem by doing so.

Itchytights · 27/09/2018 10:19

YABVVVU

A Corbyn and cold blooded McDonnell government is petrifying.

Samcro · 27/09/2018 10:20

I really hope labour get in next time, I hate the way this government tread disabled people. it all started with Cameron and hasn't got any better.

As a member of the Labour Party, I am conflicted. I have a disabled child so feel that life would be better for him under Labour. However, I cannot reconcile their current stance towards women and the undercurrent of anti-semitism. I would say I was quite far left (did not vote for Labour under Blair as I didn't feel they were socialist enough), but I don't like the way Bromentum is running the show. So, I guess I am politically homeless.

Woolythoughts · 27/09/2018 10:35

The problem is that Labour as left Labour are virtually unelectable. The reason Blair got in is he made them palatable to the centre which meant moving them further to the right.

So far:

  1. The 10% of shares having to be given to employees in trust - that will immediately stop many businesses from growing too big on purpose and put off many international businesses from coming here - which after Brexit is what we don't need. So you've now pissed off the business community.
  1. Changing council tax to a % of house price will massively raise the tax bill of many of the middle class - just the people who you need to be convinced to vote for Labour in order to get in.
  1. Increasing taxes on second homes - whilst I can see that this is popular in some sectors - if you need to get votes from non traditional labour heartlands, it won't help.
  1. Calls for a general strike. Yes, I know that was at a fringe meeting and not at the main conference but even being associated with it is bad enough.
  1. Now add in the womens issues and anti semitism and you've just alienated a whole other tranche of the voting public.

Left labour may be very popular to the traditional labour voters but frankly, increasing voting percentage from 60-80% in a safe labour seat will make not a blasted but of difference when its the leafy shires you need to convince to vote for them.

I am a Tory who cannot stand the current government - May should be taken out and shot for how she's ballsed up running the country. By rights, Labour should be MILES ahead in the polls - and they are not. Which tells you about the general unpopularity about left wing parties in this country.

The more left wing and socialist the labour party becomes, the less chance they have of actually being elected.

ghostyslovesheets · 27/09/2018 10:35

I joined Labour in 1984 aged 14 - I had been a campaigning non member until that point (leafleting, marching etc but too young to join) - I joined the T+GWU the same day - just so Graphista knows my credentials

I was part of Socialist Organiser - so no not a centralist - but also not a rabid Militant.

I am still a member but while I long for a Labour Gov I am not feeling comfortable with my party - it feels aggressive, dissent is not allowed, opposing views are dismissed (usually with accusations of being a Blairite) - AS IS an issue as is anti feminism - and I am not sure if I can remain a member

It feels like a cult right now - and ordinary people don't see JC as a hero - time to step out of the bubble maybe?

SweetSummerchild · 27/09/2018 10:38

Here we go with the ‘it’s all a brainwashing smear campaign (conspiracy) by the right-wing media’ shite.

All this from those whose idea of researching independent news is to ‘like and share’ every piece of crap from the canary that appears in their FB newsfeed.

Whizbang · 27/09/2018 10:40

I won’t be voting for the anti-semitism party thanks. They can also keep their misogyny and ruinous 1970s economic policies too. Not just incompetents, but bullying and hate filled hypocritical incompetents. They’ve shown themselves in all their horrific glory this year and lost a lot of potential voters.

ghostyslovesheets · 27/09/2018 10:42

Don't forget bloody Sqwawkbox

tlove · 27/09/2018 10:43

I want a third party to come from the centre of both Labour and Tory. At the moment we don't have enough balance. Corbyn will probably just spend the next generation's money and rack up more debt. If big companies are taxed too much here they'll bugger off somewhere else, taking their jobs with them

EggMayonnaise · 27/09/2018 10:44

As a female I would never vote for the Labour Party in its current form.

They are not a party for females.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 27/09/2018 10:46

I think many people on here would like a Labour government but one that isn’t controlled by momentum and lead by someone with anti Semitic views along with those around him and hasn’t a history of cozying up with dubious groups

And also a party that you can have confidence in actually leading the party

Can you imagine Corbyn in talking with Russian officials as May had to yesterday he would be falling over himself apologizing

May isn’t doing particularly well at the moment but she has been handed the most difficult job one that Corbyn couldn’t possibly handle he can’t handle being called out on his own remarks that were filmed no twisting of truth there

KlutzyDraconequus · 27/09/2018 10:46

Art his point in time I think I'd rather The Queen be in power and rule with an iron fist.

Can't be any bastard worse than either of the main parties.

Racecardriver · 27/09/2018 10:49

Lol. Things like this make me so glad I have options re where I live. It you want to live in a socialist shit hole go for it but don't expect my taxes to pay for it. Top earners will be leaving in droves because they can and the poor will be left to deal with the economic shit show. That hardly seems fair to me.

Pywife2 · 27/09/2018 10:59

Yes, Bowlofbabelfish, me too. It's not a case of choosing Labour to get the Tories out any more, even if there are a few things I don't agree on. I cannot vote for any party that denies women the right to organise as women, even denies us the right to talk about our experience as women.

And I'm definitely not a disaffected Blairite, Graphista. I rejoined the party because of the shift to the left under Corbyn (although not because I hero worshipped Corbyn, there's an important distinction there). I'm not considering voting Tory, you don't need to point out that they introduced this shambles of self ID as a consultation process, fully imaging it would sail through as a wonderful progressive amendment to transphobic law. They forgot all about women as well.

There's just nobody to vote for.

scatterolight · 27/09/2018 11:10

A couple of images from the Labour conference which demonstrates how batshit insane they have become...

They've dumped the working class, the vast majority of whom inconveniently voted LEAVE, in pursuit of identity politics. There is not a niche grievance bandwagon they will not jump on in a fit of virtue signalling. Ironically, they stand for the few, not the many.

To actually want a labour government
To actually want a labour government
specialsubject · 27/09/2018 11:15

Luciana Berger (Labour MP) had to have a police escort to her own party conference. I don't think the police come along without good reason.

now, why would Luciana Berger be a target... Angry

GMtoBe · 27/09/2018 11:16

YADNBU

Lonelynessie · 27/09/2018 11:28

Yabu.

I have never voted Conservative but I will not vote for Labour in its current form. They seem to hate women and the antisemitism is disgraceful.

All their policies seem to lead to a race to the bottom - we'll all be the same level of poor rather than making life better for all. They are the ultimate champagne socialist hypocrites.

SilverySurfer · 27/09/2018 11:33

Finally we have an actual Opposition Party again.

Wiping tears of laughter from my eyes.

Thanks but no thanks to the OP's suggestion.

Gaspodethetalkingdog · 27/09/2018 11:45

Corbyn seems more concerned about Palestine than the UK citizens who voted for him. I know no one who could care less about the Middle East situation and if they do know the UK can do little to improve it.

If the conservatives put of all the Palestian flag wavers at their conference that will gain them millions of votes. The Tories are pretty useless Corbyn/momentum are downright dangerous

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/09/2018 11:45

We all at some time have to experience a labour government. Afterwards you will have the experience to guide you in the future

Very well put. Personally I'd qualify it with hard left labour government, but well put all the same

Ta1kinpeace · 27/09/2018 21:52

Corbyn / Momentum are doing more harm to the Labour party than Derek Hatton / Militant did in the 80's

Corbyn is unelectable
