To be kicking myself over a stupid mistake?

Underpressureidiot · 26/09/2018 09:17

NC for this as is pretty outing. A couple of days ago now I filmed a quiz tv show and on one of the questions I made a really dumb mistake on a question I knew because I was under a lot of pressure and over thought it all and was knocked out. The trouble is, now I keep dwelling on it and feel so stupid and I’m worrying I’m going to end up on the daily mail looking like an idiot. I know it’s not the end of the world, biscuit emoji etc etc but I have anxiety generally and this has just made me a bit down (nothing major just feel dumb) Please tell me stories of your split second mistakes because I’m honestly feeling so down about this even though I should be fine.

Oh, poor you! This happens to lots of people, so don't worry.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/09/2018 09:25

I honestly wouldn't worry about it. We all get things wrong. I know it's a clique to say it but You really are a 9 day wonder.
I must say you're far stronger that you think not every one could go on TV.

crosser62 · 26/09/2018 09:30

Oh no love!!
You can absolutely guarantee that every one watching will be gutted for you!
You are not an idiotic all, you are brave, wonderful and adventurous for doing the show in the first place!
Be proud!! I don't even know you and I'm proud of you Thanks

NonaGrey · 26/09/2018 09:30

It seems like a big thing to you, because you were excited to participate but to most of the world it will pass by completely unnoticed.

Realistically how many people do you know that watch that particular show? Or read the DM?

Even if someone does mention it to you just laugh it off. Cheerfully say “yes, I had brain freeze for a minute at the end but I had great fun appearing in the show, it was really interesting”

It’s a quiz show, it really doesn’t matter. Just brazen through.

MaggieSimpsonsPacifier · 26/09/2018 09:32

It’s perfectly natural OP - you’ll focus on the one thing you got wrong, not all the stuff you got right. Most people wouldn’t dare go on the show in the first place! They might not air that bit and it’s so unlikely anyone except possibly your mates or any siblings would see it even if they did.

I can’t be too specific, but a friend of mine who worked for the government agreed to something that resulted in her boss having to apply for a super urgent injunction to prevent it that very day, and it nearly caused a major diplomatic incident. Whenever I think I’ve ballsed something up, I think of that, and it never feels that bad!

Underpressureidiot · 26/09/2018 09:33

Oh I know it won’t matter, the main reason I’m worried is because it’s one that does have a lot of viewers and gets a lot of press coverage. I really enjoyed the experience though I just feel like a dickhead for getting an easy one wrong 😂

You want to hear about stupid? As a wide-eyed late teen newly living independently in London, I had no GP and had burned my leg quite nastily on the exhaust of a motorbike. Went out on the Saturday morning to look for a doctor, saw the word "Surgery" on the side of a building. Went in and waited for the woman at the counter to become free and then asked her if someone would be able to have a look at my leg. She looked at me in disbelief and said "This is the vet." It slowly dawned on me that everyone in the room was holding an animal. I really hadn't questioned it.
And if you want to know how much worse it can get, in my embarrassment, I laughed, blushed, and said "Oh gosh, how silly of me! I bet you get that happening all the time!" The stunned silence suggests that I might - it's only a hunch, but I just might - have been the first.
Are you feeling any better now about making a blunder on a TV show? x

NancyDonahue · 26/09/2018 09:34

Don't worry about it. Everyone gets brain freeze so people will understand. It can't be any worse than this one. Poor girl!

Underpressureidiot · 26/09/2018 09:36

Omg that vet story 😂😂😂😂 I do feel a bit better. Also once my mum answered a junk call from a company called ABC world and she started shouting at them for keeping whales in captivity so we all make mistakes 😂😂😂

Bless you OP I understand why you are embarrassed but what you’ve said above is the perfect response to any comments you receive.

No one will think badly of you. Everyone knows that answering under pressure in a studi setting is not the same as doing it at home.

2cats2many · 26/09/2018 09:37

I once filmed a pilot for a quiz show that didn't get picked up in the end.

I consider myself to be a pretty clever person, good general knowledge, up with current affairs, etc. Well. As soon as I was under the studio lights, my mind went completely blank. I must have come across as a total air head.

So, I know how you feel OP. Just brush yourself off and have a good laugh at yourself. Knowone knows how it feels until they have the cameras pointed at them.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/09/2018 09:40

You will be thinking about it far more than anyone else. I'm sure anyone else in the same position would be mortified, too, but it will soon pass. If anyone says anything, do try to laugh it off, say something like, 'That's nerves for you, getting the better of me!'

Must say that if you have anxiety, you did incredibly well to go on a quiz show at all. I don't have anxiety as such, but I'd never have the nerve. I was once asked to form part of one of the (non-university) University Challenge teams. There was no way I was doing that, but I really admired those who were brave enough.

Jinglebells99 · 26/09/2018 09:43

Oh dear 😂 @nancydonahue that one made me laugh!
OP, well done for being confident enough to apply and take part. At least you got yourself out there.

JellyBears · 26/09/2018 09:45

It can’t be as bad as the lady who claimed to be an expert in everything literature and got every literature question wrong...

JellyBears · 26/09/2018 09:46

Was it pointless? You get another shot if it’s pountless don’t you?

I'd love to do Popmaster as I always do well when I listen in, but I just know I'd totally bomb as I get dreadfully nervous.

Underpressureidiot · 26/09/2018 09:49

I can’t say which one it was just in case I breach the confidentiality agreement but it was a really popular one that does get an awful lot of viewers

Oooh was it The Chase? Whatever it was bet it was an awesome experience. Focus on the positives. Laugh it off, I make mistakes even without pressure.
I said hello to someone in my street this morning because I thought they were saying hello to me. Wrong. They were using their hands free and yes they noticed me say hello to them Grin Now I'm going to be cringing all day.

Ozgirl75 · 26/09/2018 09:51

A friend of mine from school is an absolute bloody genius (and has won loads of actually difficult quiz shows) and even he got a relatively simple question wrong on WWTBAM many years ago. Still won 64k but he could have gone much further.

Also - I used to work in a bank and more than once we had people coming in asking for their eyes to be tested as we were next to Boots opticians.

LinkListen · 26/09/2018 09:51

Oh just saw it was pointless. I got a phone call mid post so am a little behind.

Underpressureidiot · 26/09/2018 09:52

It was a really great experience and I loved it but hindsight is a bitch!!!

Oh no, that poor girl who said Paris! Her friend looked really pissed off too! It's not even a Country! Oh bless her.

Surly England would be the first thing to come to mind...or Scotland or Ireland! Pretty close to home!

Don't worry about messing up OP. You are very brave to go on TV with anxiety. You couldn't even get me through the door!
