To be kicking myself over a stupid mistake?

Underpressureidiot · 26/09/2018 09:17

NC for this as is pretty outing. A couple of days ago now I filmed a quiz tv show and on one of the questions I made a really dumb mistake on a question I knew because I was under a lot of pressure and over thought it all and was knocked out. The trouble is, now I keep dwelling on it and feel so stupid and I’m worrying I’m going to end up on the daily mail looking like an idiot. I know it’s not the end of the world, biscuit emoji etc etc but I have anxiety generally and this has just made me a bit down (nothing major just feel dumb) Please tell me stories of your split second mistakes because I’m honestly feeling so down about this even though I should be fine.

im not very good at arranging my face to hide my emotions so worrying I looked totally miserable as I left 😂

You have to tell us the question, and your answer, so we can properly judge you see if it’s a problem.

I was in a crowded waiting room yesterday and when I got up, the chair made a really loud farting noise. Everyone looked and and I muttered that it was the chair. Clearly nobody believed me.

Mushroomsarehorrible · 26/09/2018 09:58

Ah don't worry about it! I wouldn't have the guts to go on a TV show and not many people would. Congratulate yourself on doing something out there and brave.

As a side, I like the sound of your mum Grin

MsHomeSlice · 26/09/2018 10:00

oh OP, I really hoped it was Pointless, I love that show!

and I absolutely howl at the faces of the contestants when their team mate cocks up!

There was one this week Chemicals with a symbol having the initial in the last half of the alphabet ...Richard even said ..."so that's N to Z" , and the first guy proudly shouts out Mendelevium Shock ...his partner said Silver later on so he was no prize either, but still

I am too modest to mention my own four Pointless answers. protactinium, tennesine, oganesson, nihonium

I try not to get too involved in quiz shows, so unless its University Challenge or Pointless I won't see you! :o

Underpressureidiot · 26/09/2018 10:00

I really can’t say the question because if I get caught I breach the contract, it was just one that I knew but I panicked and couldn’t work out what to do and was [redacted] and obviously picked the wrong one. It was a question that my mum would have got in two seconds

My old headmaster went on mastermind and did quite well. Can’t remember the exact specialist subject he chose but let’s say it was Churches (it was something like that) He got a question wrong about a church that just happy to be about 5 miles away from our School.

Vinylsamso · 26/09/2018 10:03

Not much point saying you know everything about every Church in Britain when you don’t know about the nearest one 😂 At least you didn’t particularly say you knew about that specific thing and then get it wrong! Can’t know everything.

PrivateDoor · 26/09/2018 10:06

I really wouldn't worry, I am sure you knew this was a possibility when you applied to do it. You will soon forget this embarrassment. I think you are amazeballs for agreeing to go on at all! I could never do that!

MiddleClassProblem · 26/09/2018 10:12

If I were you I’d go back and watch other eps of it and see just how many people do the same. I’m sure you’ll find plenty of examples, none news worthy. Just put your mind at rest Flowers

Mookatron · 26/09/2018 10:15

I am totally in awe of you for daring to go on a TV quiz show in the first place tbh

Underpressureidiot · 26/09/2018 10:16

I think I’d be annoyed at all the easier questions I’d see! I had tough ones first off and it put me at a bad advantage (might be a clue to what show it was 🤦🏻‍♀️) and I was flustered. I feel a bit better now but I was so excited and I love quizzing so I was looking forward to it and I’m just frustrated I let the pressure get me. I did well on the other round (also it was actually a week or two ago I’m just trying to be vague as possible) but again it was a really lovely experience and it was a great laugh

The thing is OP, your "easy" question with the obvious answer is always someone else's nemesis question. I am always in awe of people who can answer sports questions because I can't. Same as cast members of films, I always have to look people up on IMDB because they are not in my head.

And for every person thinking "ooh she got that wrong, I knew the answer" there is another thinking "I didn't know that either, glad I didn't get asked it" and someone else thinking " I know this! I do, just give me a minute, it's on the tip of my tongue......... Oh dear. Out of time."

It's why there are so many quiz shows on tv, because we all respond to every question differently, and it doesn't matter if we , or the contestants know the answers or not because the moment has gone and it's time for the next question.

"Burt Reynolds!! Thats who I was thinking of. You know, for that question about films in the last round, yes I know it wasn't the right answer, but that was the name I was trying to remember...... I always get him and that other one mixed up, Tom Sellick, it's the moustache"

Duskqueen · 26/09/2018 10:17

@NancyDonahue omg her friends face says it all. Paris isn't even a country. 😂😂 England was the first one that popped to mind for me.

No don't worry, I'm sure it's not as bad as you think. You are very brave for going on tv, I would like to go on Catchphrase, I always do really well at home and even get ones that contestants don't get, but just know I would freeze if I went on the show.
Let's us know when it has aired OP.

Iooselipssinkships · 26/09/2018 10:17

Just think of the lady on Family Fortunes who at the end when animatedly waving had her tit fall out and wobble all over the place! What show was it?

Underpressureidiot · 26/09/2018 10:18

It’ll be airing in a year as there’s a big backlog of episodes before mine so I’m sure I’ll be over it by then!!

Don't worry - intelligent people know that we can all find our brains go to mush under pressure. I still feel sorry for that girl on University challenge who banged her head just before going on, said she was fine but spent the whole episode concussed and struggled to answer anything.
I breathe a sigh of relief when contestants get answers right on their specialist area, its so easy to make a silly little mistake.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 26/09/2018 10:37

Ah OP, I do feel for you. In a previous life, I did a bit of TV and on one programme, made a total mess of my segment and got flustered. I was also pretty certain that the production team would edit it to make me look even worse. They weren't horrible people, but someone messing up was always TV gold for them.

I was absolutely dreading the broadcast date - really distracted by it. It came, I think a couple of people looked at me on the tube with a vague 'is that...?' but that could have just been a general reaction and then life moved on and I haven't thought about it since.

I survived, you will. It won't make the papers, it's a game show, not the Apprentice ( I assume). In the nicest possible way, no one will care anything like as much as you do Flowers

Underpressureidiot · 26/09/2018 10:40

I know, i keep wondering if I’d got that one right would the following ones be easier, I didn’t get any of that section of the show right (again, revealing the show if you know it) so the round was over pretty fast. I’ve been waiting so long to go on just feel like I tucked it up!

puzzledlady · 26/09/2018 10:41

Oh no OP don’t worry. A friend and his partner went on the million pound drop and lost over £100000 on something he absolutely knew.it happens to the best of us! :)

gottastopeatingchocolate · 26/09/2018 10:41

That clip is interesting - Alexander Armstrong is so gentle with her when she gets it wrong! Says it all, really - they know that people get affected by the pressure.

Don't feel bad, OP. I am impressed that you had the guts to go for it, passed the audition to get on and made it through the filming! Wish I had the guts!

MsHopey · 26/09/2018 10:47

I definitely also thinks it's the chase.
I'm sure it's not as silly as you think it is, it's only the really really bad ones that get picked up.

Paris 😂

FadedRed · 26/09/2018 10:58

Which TV quiz had the catch phrase, "The questions are only 'easy if you know the answer." or something like that?
I think you were very brave to go on a TV quiz show in the first place. Most of us, who shout the answers at the TV, wouldn't dare.
I remember when WWTBAM first started, people used to say to me, you should go on that, you're good at general knowledge. I said that as soon as the studio lights came on, i'd be amazed if i could remember my own name, let alone anything else.
Brain freeze is well known in quiz shows.

Underpressureidiot · 26/09/2018 11:01

I have to say everyone in the studio was totally lovely and I think they could see I was a bit gutted (especially because I knew straight away before the answer was shown that I was wrong) and then I had a nice time watching the rest of the show. I also wasn’t the only person knocked out so maybe it was just a hard show.

Many years ago I appeared on Wheel of Fortune. Myself and my mum travelled to Glasgow from Yorkshire, put up in a lovely hotel etc etc. Had hair and make up done and looked fab 😃. I was put with a nurse and fire fighter because at the time my job was similar. Me and the fire fighter both went to pieces. Even though I know all the answers and so did he we just got everything wrong. The nurse won all the prizes, including the big one. I was gutted. I didn't watch myself as I was so embarrassed because I'd showed off a little about going on tv haha.
Some people just get 'stage fright' for want of a better term. Do try not to beat yourself up about it OP. At least you were brave enough to have a go!

Bananasinpyjamas11 · 26/09/2018 11:08

I tell you if there’s one thing EVERYONE can sympathise with, it’s making a very public embarrassing mistake. It is so human.

I’ve flashed my knickers at a well known mayor and several hundred people by mistake. (During what was meant to be a very moving performance). It was on local TV.

I crashed on my face during an event which went YouTube viral and has thousands and thousands of views. My DP at the time laughed and laughed (thanks I really injured myself) and said he was jealous as he’d love to ‘go viral’.

There’s plenty more.

I’m just in complete admiration of you @underpressure. It’s so brave to go on a quiz show. Be proud!
