13 year olds and alcohol - AIBU

Just wanted some opinions on something that happened at the weekend. I've been stewing over it and overthinking so need some perspective. Had group of friends round for dinner and a catch up. I was mixing some drinks when one friends 13 yo dd asked if she could have a bottle of wicked - the orange alcopop one. I jokingly told her she wasn't quite old enough yet thinking she was joking with me. She then told me that her mum said she could, burst into tears and went wailing out and complained to her mum. I was then informed by said mum that "I need to get with the times" because everyone let's their kids drink, apparently I'm stuck in the dark ages as there's nothing wrong with letting them have a drink. Was I being unreasonable? I didn't let mine drink at 13, but my youngest is 17 now and maybe social times have changed?

I was babysitting from the age of 14 and swigging drinks out of the drinks cabinet

I used to nick damson gin out of my parents' drinks cabinet. From primary school age ;) But it was literally a taste.

I was having a small glass of wine with meals on special occasions from the age of 8. From when I was 13-14 i was drinking spirits and mixers, or wine on its own. My parents preferred me to drink at home so they knew I was drinking proper decent drinks, they knew where it had come from and how much I'd had. Hence as I got older I never abused alcohol and I don't get drunk. I know how to enjoy a few drinks without being daft about it. And my tolerance is high.
So I'd say you were definitely unreasonable.

No, no, no. Ridiculous.

YADNBU! Letting a 13 yo drink is irresponsible imo.

Me and my siblings were definitely on the Bacardi breeders and Reefs at 13/14! Only at parties though.

No you were NBU at all, your house your rules.

I let my DS 16 have a can of cider at 15 when on holiday last year, a glass of prosecco on Christmas morning and a can of cider six hours later with dinner and I thought I was being liberal!

He did go to a party during summer after GCSE's and I suspect had quite a bit to drink then as he looked a bit green around the gills the morning after. He played it down but he was responsible and kept in touch all evening with me so I let it go without issue.

I think a majority of 16/17 year olds do drink alcohol if they go to house parties but my DS will probably only go to a few per year as he prefers gaming on his PC. Unless you have fake ID it is very difficult around here to get into a pub/club under 18 so there is a whole cottage industry that must be making a fortune selling nefarious items such as driving licences to sixth formers.

Sorry meant to add....

Your friend should not have expected you to supply her daughter with alcohol when she is so young. It would be a debatable issue at 16/17 maybe but 13 Shock

FrangipaniBlue · 27/09/2018 23:24

that's awful but unfortunately It's probably not unusual. Surprising that no one has reported them though🤔

Me either OP, everyone talks about it and I often wonder why school have never stepped in ?!
