Don't want to waste NHS time

Roadtrip2018 · 25/09/2018 11:27

Posting for traffic, wwyd rather than AIBU really.
I'm sat at work in agony with a hot water bottle just now. I had my appendices removed about 7 years ago, I know they can't grow back, but the pain is incredible and exactly the same as when I had appendicitis. What could it be?
I don't want to waste time going to the minor injuries / A&E for it to be nothing. There's people needing proper urgent care and I've no chance seeing my GP.
FWIW I manage a team of 35 and recently returned from a car accident (fractured sternum) the director would hit the roof if I needed more time off Hmm. My colleagues reckon if I call the NHS non emergency number I'll just get told to go to my local hospital. I have a really high pain threshold so it's bothering me it's not easing off or just doing one Angry

This is something to see a doctor about urgently.

muchalover · 25/09/2018 11:29

With this much pain you should go to minor injuries. No-one will think you are wasting anyones time. Just go. The NHS exists so that no-one need suffer needlessly. GO!

Foodylicious · 25/09/2018 11:31

Could be all sorts.
Call 111.
I wouldn't suggest you drive either. Get someone to give you a lift to wherever 111 recommend. It may be an appt or A&E.

If you are feeling feverish, out of sorts/odd Or as if your heart is racing, or are out of breath, then just get to A&E.

Something is hurting for a reason and you need to find out what.

LagunaBubbles · 25/09/2018 11:33

You're in pain. It could be minor or it could be serious, you don't know. Go to A and E. I don't get this reluctance you see on here at times to seek medical advice or treatment in case its "wasting time".

bsbabas · 25/09/2018 12:06

Sounds like complications after surgery. Get an ambulance and get to the hospital.

Cheby · 25/09/2018 12:08

In very rare cases you can get appendicitis after your appendix has been removed. Essentially you can get an infection in what remains of the appendix.

Cheby · 25/09/2018 12:09

IF you have pain as severe as appendicitis, it is not wasting resources to go and get it checked. How is your temperature?

Nightwatch999 · 25/09/2018 12:18

Wish posters would stop telling people to get an ambulance out for every little thing. Hmm

OP have you had any pain killers? If not go get some strong ones, then reevaluate in a few hours.

If the pain is around the same after pain killers then pop along to your nearest Walk In Centre and lets see what they say.

EwItsAHooman · 25/09/2018 12:21

No one has said to get an ambulance, people have quite rightly said to get medical advice.

MerryInthechelseahotel · 25/09/2018 12:26

Bsbabas said upthread: Sounds like complications after surgery. Get an ambulance and get to the hospital.

Don't do this^^

As pp said get some strong pain killers and go later to a walk in if it's still bad

RandomObject · 25/09/2018 12:26

You can still get an infection where the appendix used to be. Pain as severe as that should definitely not be ignored. Go to A&E!

MerryInthechelseahotel · 25/09/2018 12:33

What painkillers have you taken so far roadtrip? And how long has it been this bad?

SevernWye · 25/09/2018 12:36

Could be an ovarian cyst. Whatever it is it needs checking out.

ChristmasFluff · 25/09/2018 12:39

Severe abdominal pain, especially of sudden onset, is NOT a 'take painkillers and wait and see'. It is a 'seek immediate medical attention' situation - whether that be GP or walk-in or A and E. 111 at least - and they would probably advise A and E.

ConfusedMum82 · 25/09/2018 12:40

Obviously not a medical professional myself but I've had severe pain misdiagnosed as appendicitis which turned out to be caused by Polycystic Ovaries.
But as you've been in a car accident I would phone 111, you could have a rupture or bleed somewhere.
Wouldn't say ambulance though.

CatboySpeed · 25/09/2018 12:41

Have you taken any pain relief?

That would be the first thing to ask rather then advising rushing to a&e.

MrsMozart · 25/09/2018 12:43

Given the recent car accident I think you need to pop off to A&E lass.

PurpleDaisies · 25/09/2018 12:46

Have you ring for proper medical advice yet?

Keel · 25/09/2018 12:47

Sudden onset of pain especially after you've recently been in an accident needs medical attention.

Uncreative · 25/09/2018 12:51

Following a car crash? Spleen. Or it could be your gall bladder. It needs to be checked out ASAP. Go to the hospital now.

LydiaLunch7 · 25/09/2018 13:01

No offence OP, but my God some people are stupid.

"I'm in immense pain, if I talk to an expert they'll tell me to go to hospital, so maybe I'll just ask a bunch of clueless people online instead"

Good one.

mypointofview · 25/09/2018 13:03

It's appalling that British people don't feel able to go to a doctor unless they're dying.

You have a medical emergency. Either make an emergency appointment (with an out of hours GP if necessary) or go to A and E. That's what the NHS is for.

Roadtrip2018 · 25/09/2018 13:03

Thanks all, it started around 6am, i held off taking anything as it wasn't unbearable, finally gave in and took painkillers around 10am and they didn't make much difference. Called 111 in the end and they've sent me to A&E. So I'm waiting to be seen. Feel like I'm wasting time though, here with abdominal pain. In my defence the pain is horrific 😣

mypointofview · 25/09/2018 13:03

If you really really don't want to trouble anyone, at least pay for an online GP appointment. They will probably tell you to go straight to A and E and you'll feel ok about doing so.

mypointofview · 25/09/2018 13:04

Awful for you but why do you think abdominal pain can't be an emergency?
