Don't want to waste NHS time

Roadtrip2018 · 25/09/2018 11:27

Posting for traffic, wwyd rather than AIBU really.
I'm sat at work in agony with a hot water bottle just now. I had my appendices removed about 7 years ago, I know they can't grow back, but the pain is incredible and exactly the same as when I had appendicitis. What could it be?
I don't want to waste time going to the minor injuries / A&E for it to be nothing. There's people needing proper urgent care and I've no chance seeing my GP.
FWIW I manage a team of 35 and recently returned from a car accident (fractured sternum) the director would hit the roof if I needed more time off Hmm. My colleagues reckon if I call the NHS non emergency number I'll just get told to go to my local hospital. I have a really high pain threshold so it's bothering me it's not easing off or just doing one Angry

I think u are in the right place hope they fix u soon

PiperPublickOccurrences · 25/09/2018 13:42

How weird - I was at the out of hours last night with similar pain. Came on suddenly, was doubled over in agony. Spoke to the 111 people who sent me to walk in centre. By the time I'd got there the pain was better but not gone. Still tender today.

Doc said maybe appendix, maybe bowel related, maybe ovary. He's referring me for an ultrasound to see what's going on.

Hope you get answers soon.

Bornlazy · 25/09/2018 13:42

I think a big part of the problem is that some people do abuse these services so they clamp down to such an extent that normal people who are genuinely in need, tie themselves up in knots as to whether they should be using them.

Quartz2208 · 25/09/2018 13:44

Minor breaks and cuts requiring stitches should (if nearby) be minor injuries clinic (because that is what they are
A&E is the access point for surgery/getting on the ward/further treatment

abdominal pain would need to be assessed - it could be anything from something requiring immediate surgery to trapped wind but only a medical professional can help

NewYoiker · 25/09/2018 13:47

Ffs right if you're in pain why do people go all burning martyr? I just don't get it. You know your own body, I work in A&E and we NEVER say to people oh you shouldn't be here.. yes there are idiots who turn up with coughs and colds and 99% of the time they get sent on their way with look after yourself at home advice but that 1% that don't and have to stay in shouldn't have stayed at home.

I'm glad you're in A&E now, but if you're asking the internet if you need A&E you probably do!

MrsG841 · 25/09/2018 13:50

Hope ur OK op. Sounds awful

ipswichmum · 25/09/2018 13:52

Hope they can sort you out and get you feeling more comfortable x

BoreOfWhabylon · 25/09/2018 13:59

This is not a waste of NHS time/resources. Apart from any other possible cause, severe lower abdo, pain in a woman of childbearing age ALWAYS means that ectopic pregnancy must be ruled out as a matter of urgency.

eelbecomingforyou · 25/09/2018 14:01

Could be adhesions after your appendix op. Or an nfection. Pain that bad should always be investigated. Good luck at A&E.

MrsSpenserGregson · 25/09/2018 14:01

What are these minor injuries clinics / walk-in centres that I often see referred to on here? They sound like such a good idea! We don't have anything like that where I live; it's GP surgery or A&E, no other options.

OP - hope you get it sorted soon, you're in the right place now - take care

AttilaTheMeerkat · 25/09/2018 14:14

Am glad that you are now in A & E OP.

bellabasset · 25/09/2018 14:15

Unexplained pain IS what going to A&E is all about. The difficulty in getting drs appointments and the reminders not to use A&E discourage some people Hope it's nothing serious

Starlight345 · 25/09/2018 14:17

Hope it actually does turn out to be nothing however you are in the right place to get it assessed.

I had an incident a few years ago with my DS . I phoned 111 they said A&E within the hour.. I actually appologised to A&E stafee. my DS needed surgery within 24 hours.... so you don't ever know as you are not medically trained so it is right to be assessed.

Janleverton · 25/09/2018 14:17

Could be a burst ovarian cyst. They are agony.

Emmageddon · 25/09/2018 14:18

I'm glad you're in A&E.

Never ever ignore persistent pain. It's your body's way of telling you something is amiss.

maras2 · 25/09/2018 14:26

Adhesions are not uncommon, years after abdominal surgery, and extremely painful.
There's also something called Mekel's diverticulum which is sometimes mistaken for appendicitis as the symptoms are very similar.
Anyway I see that you're in casualty now.Best place for you. Good luck and in the words of Dr, Ranj ' Be happy, be healthy and get well soooon'

TheHobbitMum · 25/09/2018 14:50

I'm glad you are being seen OP, you did the right thing

MerryInthechelseahotel · 25/09/2018 15:41

mypointofview that is funnily enough your point of view.

The first thing you are usually asked is have you taken any painkillers and have they helped.

She didn't say she had. She didn't say she had a temperature or tenderness.

And yes, you are wrong, I am a nurse.

mypointofview · 25/09/2018 16:01

MerryInthechelseahotel Worse and worse! Why didn't you ask if she had a fever before throwing out advice to someone suffering severe pain?

Unbelievable.

TomHardysNextWife · 25/09/2018 16:23

Glad you've gone in OP.

I keep getting chest pain from costochondritis but my GP always insists that I have to be seen in A & E for bloods/ECG. I've been in twice in the last 4 months and always feel desperately embarassed having to do so but the staff are never anything less than amazing and always say that sudden onset pain has to be investigated.

The trouble is that we all know people who misuse A & E and that impacts our judgement to use it ourselves.

RamblingFar · 25/09/2018 16:34

Glad you've got to A+E OP, hope you're sorted soon.

A+E, minor injuries and urgent care are all in the same place at two of my local hospitals. Seems a brilliant idea to me. Same reception and triage for all three and then they direct you to the appropriate area of the hospital. I've gone in asuming I needed A+E before and ended up in urgent care, and gone in assuming I needed minor injuries and ended up in A+E. Helps stop you worrying you're going to the wrong place.

@LydiaLunch7 some of us are trained medical professionals who have been doing the job longer than i can remember.

Roadtrip2018 · 25/09/2018 19:02

Thanks for all the replies. I have an ovarian cyst... MN could've told me that. Had some morphine now going to try snooze. Thanks again xx
