To hate those “Mother” / “Mama” / “Mutha” sweatshirts / jumpers?!

Those jumpers emblazoned with the words “Mother” / “Mama” / “Mutha” etc. that seem to have been around for a couple of years now – am I alone in finding them just beyond annoying? I find them just unbearably smug, contrived, attention-seeking, cringeworthy… especially as I am currently (desperately) TTC. I think they are kind of rubbing my nose in it a bit, I could be over-sensitive, but aside from that, I just think they are DEEPLY uncool anyway and I would not be seen dead in one! Just smacks of wanting to look like an instamum to me. ABIU?

I have two Selfish Mother jumpers (wearing one right now actually!)

I like them- they’re pretty cosy and I like typography, but it’s hard finding stuff hat doesn’t have something like “Live, Laugh, Live” on it. At least part of the profits go to women’s charities, which is more than can be said for most clothing.

fourandnomore · 24/09/2018 12:40

Oh and mine is so cosy I just gave my husband a dude one for his birthday, should I warn him of the eye rolling, tuts and inward seething he may experience when he drops the kids off, or is it just the female ones?

noworklifebalance · 24/09/2018 12:41

I don't think anyone is getting upset about it - this is a marmite thread (there are a couple of actual marmite threads running on AIBU).

I can only speak for our school playground but parents turn up in all sorts from gym gear, cycling gear, suits, jeans, make up, no make up, sleek hair, frizz (me) - none of us care.

DunkerOfSussex · 24/09/2018 12:42

A mother's place is in the resistance Quite like that actually. Confident no one would confuse me with an instamum Grin

DunkerOfSussex · 24/09/2018 12:42

fourandnomore Oh no, he might be an instamum and you didn't even know it!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 24/09/2018 12:43

They are lame. But I think people get them as presents, and possibly feel obliged to wear them?

YeTalkShiteHen · 24/09/2018 12:44

I also have football team hoodies, and a veteran’s charity one that says zro fks gvn Grin

With all the stereotypes flying round on here I reckon I’d confuse the shit out of some people Grin

ElspethFlashman · 24/09/2018 12:45

Ant McPartlins new girlfriend was wearing a Winging It one for their ultra-staged snog photos in the DM last week. I cringed for her a bit. I guess it could be described as "winging it" when you have an exit affair with your friends alcoholic husband, yes... Confused

NeverTwerkNaked · 24/09/2018 12:45

I sympathise Op. when you are struggling to conceive everything like this hurts.
But remember some of the people wearing them may have struggled to conceive too.

I’m ambivalent about them. I like the charity aspect but I’m not a fan of slogan jumpers anyway, regardless of what they say.

fourandnomore · 24/09/2018 12:46

Ha ha yes dunkin, maybe he is! I might squirrel it away, the marmite thing is right though, I never notice what anyone wears unless I really like it, I must admit.

LydiaLunch7 · 24/09/2018 12:49

Any top with anything written on it is unnecessary and stupid.

ElspethFlashman · 24/09/2018 12:50

I like the Kemi Telford ones. They just say "Solid Gold" and vaguer things. They're ok.

starfish8 · 24/09/2018 12:55

I thought they were ok when they first came out, but now seem very uncool and agree worn by Instagram-supermums!

Being a mother doesn't define me, it's not my sole identity. I really don't need to be advertising myself as a 'Mother' when I'm with my 4 yo!

I'd rather have one that identifies me as a 'woman working in tech' thanks very much.

jaffacakemonster · 24/09/2018 13:03

Ha, thanks for the responses, have made me chuckle. To be fair, I didn't realise that there was a charity initiative behind the original. That makes it a bit more bearable, but YES to the commenters who've pointed out the irony in the wearers usually being white, middle class, privileged types ( I would count myself in this bracket mind). I think part of my annoyance with them stems from a hint of jealousy though, in that it's a club I want to be a part of (that said, I don't think I'd ever wear one, or a slogan tee in general)

batshitebather · 24/09/2018 13:09

It’s weird, I love sweatshirts & slogans, have loads of Whistles one but I just find the mother, mama etc ones uncool. I also wouldn’t wear something with belle, etc on my front.

I’m white & mc.

noworklifebalance · 24/09/2018 13:11

you have a better reason to be irritated by this, jaffacakemonster, than my irrational dislike. If I have seen these tops in real life then they clearly haven't made an impression on me. The ones I remember are the online ads.

NoSleepTil2030 · 24/09/2018 13:27

should I warn him of the eye rolling, tuts and inward seething he may experience when he drops the kids off, or is it just the female ones?

I wouldn't be doing any of the above tho us but FWIW I think similar t-shirts for men/dads are just as cringey. Saw a guy I know the other day reading a "best husband ever" t-shirt Envy (not envy).

NoSleepTil2030 · 24/09/2018 13:28

"tho us" should say "things", bloody phone.

Rachelweasel · 24/09/2018 13:34

I can't wait to buy one once my baby is born. I really like them, it's just a jumper. I also really like a lot of the "instamums" 🙄 as well though so meh. YABU to be so affected by it, live and let live.

FarrahMoan · 24/09/2018 13:49

Tell us your size rachelweasel there will be a few jumpers going free after this post Wink

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 24/09/2018 13:50

Have one. Wear one. Love it. It's a sweatshirt that actually fits me. Don't give a crap what anyone else thinks. It's comfy and lovely.

elf1985 · 24/09/2018 13:52

I have a mother of dragons jumper instead. Way more awesome!

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 24/09/2018 13:53

YABU. It's a jumper that rises a lot of money for charity. You are being too sensitive. I do hate all the knock off versions though.

dueanotherchange · 24/09/2018 13:59

I have one, and I use instagram. And I'm white and middle class.

I like the charity effort behind them, saw a friend's and saw how comfy it was and wear it on the way home from the gym or on the school run. I'll have to look out for the judgey eyes now.

Seriously, do people have nothing better to worry about?!

PiggyPoos · 24/09/2018 14:02

I'm sure people aren't at home worried sick and seething over them but I don't like them much.

I would just feel like a bit of a knob in one to be honest.
