To think she's called her children the same name?

Someone local to me has called their children Harvard and Harvey.

Are they not basically the same thing? Could Harvey not be short for Harvard?

I think it is like Sammy and Samuel? Or AIBU and they are totally different names?

My ex SIL has boys with the same name, but one with another letter (along the lines of Emma Gemma). Bizarre!!!!

calmandbright · 22/09/2018 21:48

Not paul 😂

Florries · 22/09/2018 22:02

I'm watching season 3 of Face Off and there are twin brothers called Derek and Eric...

lalalemon · 22/09/2018 22:22

I know someone with an Alex and an Alice! They sound exactly the same!

Confuzzlediddled · 22/09/2018 22:30

When my mum was a teenager (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth) she used to babysit for a neighbour's twins, b/g leslie-george and lesley-carol, essentially the same first name!

I used to know a Charles, who had an older sister called Charlotte. Both ended up being known as ‘Charlie’.

For some bizarre reason I'm really enjoying this thread.

In some countries it is standard to give matching names to siblings, either by letter, sound or theme.

FunSponges · 22/09/2018 23:00

Harvard! Poor bastard.

TheMadGardener · 22/09/2018 23:06

I used to teach a brother and sister called Julian and Juliana. Not twins. They were Albanian, not sure if matching names are common in Albania.

AndBabyMakes3 · 23/09/2018 00:03

not-Paul snorts Grin almost spat my drink out at that Grin

My DDad (Bernard Joseph mysurname) married my mom who took his surname...she was Bernadette Josephine so they both became Bernie Jo mysurname or just Bernie surname. Made opening post very confusing at times. Then my DB was given Bernard as his middle name also!!!! Not sure what they were thinking really.

"One is a university. The other is a six-foot white rabbit."

^This. 😂

Might be an extreme case of baby brain. We accidentally named our sons to have matching names (the second half of their names were identified so like Harold and Arnold). We didn't notice until someone pointed it out to us months later. Apparently everyone thought it was intentional.

Penisbeakerismyfavethread · 23/09/2018 00:49

I’m here to let you all know you can escape the same initial sibset horror, if you’re lucky! I’m from a family where myself and my sisters all have E names:
Elena, Emily, Elisha, and Esmé. We go by Nell, Em, Lily and Mimi
All is not lost

RandomChitchat · 23/09/2018 00:54

I know 2 brothers whose names are different only by 1 letter, think Tomos and Tomas. I assumed it was a cultural thing as family are not originally from UK but I do find it a bit odd.

MidniteScribbler · 23/09/2018 00:59

I worked at a school where there was a set of twins that were Alexander and Alexandra.

I also know a couple who are Peter and Peta. Very confusing!

Tartypants · 23/09/2018 01:10

There was a documentary a while back about Nicolae Ceaușescu, and I'm pretty sure his big sister was something like Nicolina, while one of his brothers was also....Nicolae,

madeoficecream · 23/09/2018 01:13

My children have similar sounding names....
They are totally different names and look very different when written down but the middle sound of them is the same for both.

We did notice before hand and were going to go with something else for my daughter... but then when it came down to it we loved that name so much we just used it anyway.
The shortening of it sounds nothing like my sons name so hopefully there wont be too much of an issue when calling for them!

Fabricwitch · 23/09/2018 01:26

I won't say the names as they might know I'm talking about them, but I know someone who called their kids the equivalent of "Harvey Harvard". At first I thought it was weird but it's growing on me now...

Fabricwitch · 23/09/2018 01:26

Their kid* it's a first and middle name

ForgotwhatIcameinherefor · 23/09/2018 01:26

I used to work with a woman whose sister had several children, 2 of whom were named Zena-Rose and Rosina.
More recently I am baffled by a family where the dad’s pre-existing sons were called Jacob & Liam, and 2 more sons added with second wife have been named Jack & William. Confused meanwhile the ex-wife was planning to marry a man who also had a son called Liam... in that scenario I would not have had a word art family “tree” of all their names made up and posted to Facebook Blush

Fabricwitch · 23/09/2018 01:33

I also know a sibling group of Mary, Marie and Marie (different pronounciations), and used to know a Sean and Shauna.
I have to say I think it's cute when they're twins but otherwise confusing!
I know a couple of people with the same first and surnames too, like (but not) Dylan Dylan

TheMadGardener · 23/09/2018 02:02

Oh yes, also used to teach boy/girl twins called Sharif and Sharifa.

Bouncingbelle · 23/09/2018 02:05

I know twins called leon & leona and Sara & Zara. Have a friend with a Hattie (harriet) & a Harry. I really had to try to not comment when i first met them!
