Someone local to me has called their children Harvard and Harvey.

Are they not basically the same thing? Could Harvey not be short for Harvard?

I think it is like Sammy and Samuel? Or AIBU and they are totally different names?

There are siblings in the nursery I work at called Ellie, Ella and Ellis!

Legageddon · 22/09/2018 14:54

I know twins called Emily and Millie.

ThrowThoseCurtainsWide · 22/09/2018 14:56

Harvard is just not a name you would give a child!!!!

TheDarkPassenger · 22/09/2018 14:58

My ‘mil’ genuinely suggested Olivia for my daughter when we were choosing her name, and was genuinely confused as to why we vetoed it immediately.
Our eldest is called Oliver Hmm

BoiledFrog · 22/09/2018 15:00

I knew a woman with daughters named emma-lee and Emily Hmm

Oh they haven't. Pish.

If you're old enough to remember the days when little girls liked to read comics like Mandy, or Judy or Bunty, there were always stories featuring identical twins, and they always had really similar names. They'd probably be orphans (there was a disproportionate amount of parental death in those comics) and they'd either be separated at birth or else spend all their time pretending to be just one person. And they tended towards being called things like Jenna and Gemma, or Natalie and Natasha, or Cathy and Katie.

Ah, happy memories.

fleshmarketclose · 22/09/2018 15:31

My son went to school with identical twins called Caroline and Carolyn which confused everybody because some people pronounced both names Carol -in so even if a teacher meant Caroline it would be Carolyn who answered.

mumsastudent · 22/09/2018 15:33

ah well saves the issue of yelling for child using wrong name & working your way through their names! Alternatively she will just callout hey you!!

LastInTheQueue · 22/09/2018 15:35

I know a couple who named their children Phillip and Phillipa after the dad, Phillip... Hmm

Stabbitha, you know the Calfs?

WickedGoodDoge · 22/09/2018 15:44

Harvard is much better known as the best little town in the whole of the US rather than as the university.

But yes, very silly and not terribly well thought out.

RainbowCookie · 22/09/2018 15:45

That tv show Nicky, Ricky, Dicky and Dawn always annoys me - surely Ricky and Dicky are both from the same name - Richard

SoupDragon · 22/09/2018 15:47

Ricardo/Eric and Dickon?

SoupDragon · 22/09/2018 15:48

Anyway, it’s Dawn I feel sorry for. She should have been Nicky and Nicky could have been Micky.

NonaGrey · 22/09/2018 15:50

Poor Harvard. I hope he’s bright.

I know a woman called Pauline who called her children Paul, Paulina and Emma. She’s a rather uptight kind of person so I’ve never asked but so many questions...

Ariela · 22/09/2018 15:54

I was at school with one of a family of about 7 or 8 children all beagn with the letter J, so Jane, Jacqueline, Judy, Jennifer, John, Joseph. Julian etc. I'm sure it must've been confusing.
Know of another family with about half a dozen kids all about a year apart and all begin with the same letter, and I tend to work my way through the names till I get the right one (doesn't help but they all look the same!)

DeathyMcDeathStarFace · 22/09/2018 16:25

Yes, very similar names.

I know someone with boys called Teddie and Freddie. These are their given names, not short for Edward and Frederick, maybe if they had another boy they'll go for Neddie or Eddie! If they don't hear their names being called clearly they won't know which person is being called on.

When I was at school there was an Amy and a Jamie in the same class the same year, sometimes took a few seconds to work out which one the teacher was calling on. It must be difficult when there are multiple children in classes with the same name.

ArtemisWeatherwax · 22/09/2018 16:40

My neighbours as a child were Paul, his wife Pauline and their daughter Paula. They had a son too but I can't remember his name because we just called him not-Paul.

There's a Chris and Chris couple my parents know who not only insist they both be called Chris even though the other one is Chris; their surname is Peacock so you'd think he'd stick with Christopher and she'd keep her maiden name but no they want to both be Chris Peacock.

Beargoesgrr · 22/09/2018 16:44

I went to school with a girl who was called Samantha, her brother was Samuel. Both were shortened to Sam. It was fucking weird. Can imagine the same with Harvard and Harvey.

Harvard is also a rubbish first name, is it not?

Whatjusthappenedthere · 22/09/2018 16:50

I know siblings called Lisa and Lee. No middle names. It’s like their parents couldn’t be arsed. Grin

MollyHuaCha · 22/09/2018 17:12

I knew a family with an Emma and a Gemma.

And another with Benjamin and Benita.

No imagination I guess.

Hilltoptea · 22/09/2018 17:24

I met someone with a Toby and a Tobias once. I was trying so hard to be polite and not laugh Grin
