Pet bowls in dishwasher

eco1636 · 21/09/2018 18:26

do you put cat food/water bowls in the d/w?

We have a sensor cycle, which is most economic, also a hygiene cycle, which is super hot - think practically boiling. Loathe to use that one all the time. What do you do?

Following this thread I have washed dog's bowls in dishwasher, if i put it on over night. No worries.

Imamouseduh · 26/09/2018 07:13

Yes it just goes in with the rest on normal wash. Pet food in this country is human grade so I can’t see a problem with it.

RickOShay · 26/09/2018 07:20

Same majestic. The dog is an interval part of my cleaning up routine. He could be better though.
I still miss my sister’s chocolate labrador for her excellent food hoovering abilitities.
Yes the pet bowls go in the dishwasher.

RickOShay · 26/09/2018 07:20

integral

Unfinishedkitchen · 26/09/2018 07:38

Dishwasher is more hygienic than sink as it’s hotter and washes for far longer.

Also why would someone freak out about putting a dog bowl in but not knives and boards used for cutting up raw meat which is far more dangerous?

ParanoidGynodroid · 26/09/2018 07:45

I don't, as my pets are fed in the utility room which is on a different floor to the kitchen/ dishwasher, so I just wash their bowls in the sink there.

It doesn't bother me, though. I recall from about 2 years ago on here a poster writing about putting her toilet seat in the dishwasher, so after that pet bowls are nothing!

PUGaLUGS · 26/09/2018 07:52

Yes I do.

I also use the dishcloth sometimes to wash her bowl out and I use our cutlery to dish her raw food out

She hasn’t no chance of licking her bum or bits as she cannot reach Grin.

CraftyYankee · 26/09/2018 07:59

Our spaniel loves to stand on the door to the dishwasher as I'm loading it and have a go at plates and cutlery. We call him the prerinse cycle. 😂

lynmilne65 · 26/09/2018 08:01

'Utility Room ' 🤣

ParanoidGynodroid · 26/09/2018 08:14

lynmilne65

What would you call it then? "That room with the washing machine and tumble drier in it" ? Confused

Celebelly · 26/09/2018 08:32

Our spaniel pre-wash cycle saves a lot of time and scraping!

MsHomeSlice · 26/09/2018 09:16

the dog is the main reason that dh now cooperates with my KNIVES DOWN policy, never mind that it's safer, but because he doesn't want the dog to hurt itself on the sharp knives.

it''s tradition for me to remember I haven't done a final cup check for the dishwasher so I go patrol the sitting room and office computer cupboard and shout "you'd better not be in that dishwasher" as the dog runs by me to the kitchen and I hear clattering noises, he is always sitting nicely right next to the open dishwasher as I return. Hmm :o

Chartreuse45 · 26/09/2018 09:21

That was my first thought! I knew a child who got it from their own dog. You will never forget seeing worms coming out of an eye!

MatildaTheCat · 26/09/2018 09:27

My dog generally washes the cats bowl for me, he does a good job. Grin

Cat is 18 so doesn’t seem to be harming her.

Nanny0gg · 26/09/2018 09:32

I don't, mainly because the bowls never used to be suitable for the dishwasher.

If I did I just think it would be a good idea to clean out the filter very regularly.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 26/09/2018 09:41

My mother would wash the cat's bowls in the kitchen sink, but on their own (never put into the water with any human stuff) and washed using their own cloth. So I used to do the same, except I'd use the bathroom sink (as there is usually stuff in the kitchen sink). I'd have one sponge for the cat's bowls, and another for the rabbits' and guinea pigs' (carnivore vs herbivore split).

DP doesn't care, and will just throw all the above in the sink together with our stuff and wash it there. So now I'll put the cat's bowls in of a morning. I wouldn't put the others in, purely because they tend to have poo on / in them, so they do get done separately if I'mm there. I rather suspect DP just does them with the rest when I'm not.

apostropheuse · 26/09/2018 09:45

Our pre-rinse cycle is a chocolate Labrador; he's extremely efficient. We don't generally put his, or the cats', dishes in the dishwasher, but not for any particular reason - we just never thought of it.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 26/09/2018 09:57

I don't. Not because of germs etc just because I've always washed them in the utility room sink. My dog licks my plate sometimes so it's not like I'm neurotic about sharing his germs Wink

Arealmanithink · 26/09/2018 11:05

Just out of curiosity.. For all the "oh my god" folks out there. Do you put on a full hazmat suit when cleaning the loo? Do you keep your toothbrushes in the bathroom? Google aerosolized antigens if you dare. I am no longer surprised by anything.

UpstartCrow · 26/09/2018 11:07

No. The dishwasher detergents include acid and salt, and traces left on the dishes can cause ulcers in your pets mouth.
When we had pets they had a seperate washing up bowl, sponge, and pet safe detergent.

Arealmanithink · 26/09/2018 14:03

So it's about the pets mouths? Wasn't the impression I got. It seemed like it was all.. Ewwww, pet stuff near my stuff.. Oh and all the traces left on the pets dishes are also on your dishes.. so just lose the Dishwasher.. Sorry.. no... but I've never had any problems like that.

OracleofDelphi · 26/09/2018 14:12

Some of these replies....... seriously. My dog eats raw meat only. How is his raw meat in a bowl that he has licked, any different to raw chicken on a plate defrosting? His lick isnt super dangerous or we'd all die from cuddling our dogs, stroking them, sitting down next to them!

I wouldnt put them in if I was sterilising jam jars or baby bottles but its no different to a chopping board that has had raw meat on it. my dishwasher even on its normal cycle seems to wash stuff hotter than my hands could - its so not an issue.

thecatsthecats · 26/09/2018 14:28

I don't wash in the dishwasher due to the risk of sores from the chemicals -advice from the vets.

Quick water rinse with a separate sponge. (I'd have no problem with them going in with our dishes if they were in the dishwasher though...)

Iseveryusernametaken · 30/09/2018 15:24

Some comments are hilarious! A lot of our food is grown in poop!

easyandy101 · 30/09/2018 15:46

Wash them with water and no detergent personally

Would happily share a bowl of food with the cat but assumed they wouldn't like the smell of detergent so wouldn't do it for that reason
