Pet bowls in dishwasher

do you put cat food/water bowls in the d/w?

We have a sensor cycle, which is most economic, also a hygiene cycle, which is super hot - think practically boiling. Loathe to use that one all the time. What do you do?

DDog also licks plate clean on occasion. And, dare I say it, finish a brew in my mug!!!

MajesticWhine · 22/09/2018 06:30

DDog finishes off a bowl of Rice Krispies and leaves it very clean ready for the dishwasher. Very helpful.

Narya · 22/09/2018 06:37

Yep they go in with evei else. Either your dishwasher can clean dishes or it can't. If you think it can't, why use it at all?

Doghorsechicken · 22/09/2018 06:40

Why are people disgusted that you can wash dog bowls in the dishwasher? Do you not put plates contaminated with raw chicken etc in? Surely that would be just as hygienic as a bowl licked by a dog? People never cease to amaze me!

BiteyShark · 22/09/2018 06:43

I hand wash the dog bowel using a separate sponge for cleaning in between feeds. Then every 2 weeks I put them in the dishwasher to make sure they get a 'proper' clean at a high temperature. They go in the dishwasher on their own but only because they are large and wouldn't fit with our normal pots and pans.

Washing in separate rooms?

I'm surprised that some of these people even have pets.

IME children are far more disgusting than animals (I have both - we're relaxed and rarely get sick)

shutupandgotosleep · 22/09/2018 06:52

Yes, the cat dishes go in the dishwasher. Because I serve her meat on the same side plates as we use to eat our meals off.
It all comes out clean in the end.

CutesyUserName · 22/09/2018 07:21

Ours are ceramic and go in the dishwasher. However, I found that bowls that had wet cat food in leave the other stuff in the dishwasher with a weird smell (same sort of smell that eggs can leave). Not everyone can smell it (me and DS can smell it and it makes us reel, DD and DH can't smell it at all). I found the solution is to line the cats wet food plates with foil so the food doesn't actually touch the bowls. Works a treat - no more smell.

Pringlemunchers · 22/09/2018 09:30

Maybe because it washing that residue all over your "clean" crockery and is drying on.

Pringlemunchers · 22/09/2018 09:37

Just to be clear most home dishwashers do not sterilize ( just in case people are thinking of putting babies bottles etc in )

TrickyD · 22/09/2018 10:06

I hate dealing with cat food plates so we use paper ones for him and just chuck them away.

Parker231 · 22/09/2018 10:10

The cat dishes go in the dishwasher with everything else on a normal cycle. Much more hygienic than hand wash.

SuburbanRhonda · 22/09/2018 10:12

I hand wash the dog bowel using a separate sponge

That’s going above and beyond the call of duty Grin

MsHomeSlice · 22/09/2018 10:13

I shoved the children's baby stuff into the dishwasher and never bothered with a steriliser really

the only cat plates that don't go in the dishwasher are the fancy crystal ones I bought them :o

Beamur · 22/09/2018 10:14

I'd admit to having fairly lax standards on cleaning, but this is one area I am a bit fussy about. I do not wash my pets food bowls in with the human ones, I wash my pet bowls by hand in the sink. Every now and again I might put them in the dishwasher if I'm running it stuff like the bits from inside the oven/grill/microwave. Gets everything all sparkly clean.
I never let pets lick plates or cutlery.

ThePricklySheep · 22/09/2018 10:16

Those of you saying no, what do you do if you stroke your pet, which has presumably been licking itself clean?
Is soap and warm water enough to clean your hand? I presume so, therefore apply the same logic to the dishwasher.

8misskitty8 · 22/09/2018 10:23

I put the rabbit and degu bowls in the dishwasher. If it cleans raw chicken germs of cutlery etc. Then it is suitable for animal bowls which have less lethal germs.

I draw the line at people who wash toilet seats, potties and toilet brushes in a dishwasher though.

AfterSchoolWorry · 22/09/2018 10:55

No. I wash his dishes with a separate brush and jug of hot water I keep in the shed for that purpose. This is disinfected with Milton, used water is thrown directly down the shore.

bonzo77 · 22/09/2018 10:58

Yep. In the dishwasher. With everything else.

Jb291 · 22/09/2018 10:58

My cat bowls all go in the dishwasher. They come out clean and sanitised. Job done.

ToadOfSadness · 22/09/2018 11:10

I hand wash the dog bowel
Colonic irrigation?

Apart from his first bowls which had rubbery non slip things on them, all ours have gone in the dishwasher. No-one has been ill because of this in many, many years.

Ruky44 · 26/09/2018 03:11

Hi. I'm using Finish Quantum in my dishwasher. Can anyone tell me of any cheaper good tablets. Our local and main Tesco don't sell their Everyday value tablets which had a good review. Any recommendations plz.

lelepond · 26/09/2018 03:37

I do placate DH by doing a separate wash for the dogs (they have a lot of paraphernalia). Seems a massive waste but better than washing by hand.

A cast member from Real Housewives of New York uses her dishwasher to clean her sex toys! Makes kibble and a bit of chicken seem like nothing.

pandarific · 26/09/2018 06:09

The bloody hot steam when I open the door mid cycle and 'too hot to touch' plates at the end on mine - even on eco - leads me to believe we're not all going to die of cat pox any time soon.

I couldn't wash plates that hot by hand.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/09/2018 06:42

Toxoplasmosis isn't dangerous unless you're pregnant.

Or for other reasons have a weakened immune system.

There's some evidence this parasite may affect the brain even if the host doesn't feel ill at all.

Fairly irrelevant to this discussion as it's passed by faeces not saliva ... wear gardening gloves in case a cat has contaminated your soil and do what you want with your dishes.
