Pet bowls in dishwasher

do you put cat food/water bowls in the d/w?

We have a sensor cycle, which is most economic, also a hygiene cycle, which is super hot - think practically boiling. Loathe to use that one all the time. What do you do?

Yep, the dog food is way better quality than anything we eat. We spend most of the day cuddling a dog or 3, so their spit is already everywhere.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 21/09/2018 22:26

I'm not overly mad on hygiene but home d/washers are not some magical germ killing device ( check your temps and Google it !).

My dishwasher gets up to 80c during the rinse cycle. Significantly hotter than I could tolerate during hand washing.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 21/09/2018 22:28

Yes, as do chopping boards. Miraculously I’m still alive Grin

Pringlemunchers · 21/09/2018 22:33

Have you actually checked it ? And do you put it in on that wash ? Honestly I am not a germ freak but this is something that I would never do !!

babywipessolveanything · 21/09/2018 22:35

I've never done it, always felt a bit ick about it but I'm going to do it tomorrow as you're all still alive and because I've realised I'm a shitty owner because I never actually wash his bowls at all. Blush

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 21/09/2018 22:36

No I've never checked it but everything is too hot to touch with bare hands when it's finished so again still getting a better wash than if I did it by hand.

mrsm43s · 21/09/2018 22:38

Dishwashers wash hot enough to sterilize jars for jam making. Sterilize.

So yes, my cat bowls go in there, along with our human crockery and cutlery, and it all comes out sterile.

My cat feels the urge to have a good wash after we stroke her. Obviously she feels us humans are germ laden. So I guess it's fair to say her bowls come out sterile, until we put our mucky, germy human hands on them!

simbobs · 21/09/2018 22:40

Nope, never put dog bowls in dishwasher, just wash in sink after other dishes done. I think any germs get circulated and use the eco cycle for our things. Don't do them that often, either.

motortroll · 21/09/2018 22:43

It's only has meat on it?!

overagain · 21/09/2018 22:45

Yes, normal cycle. But I out all sorts in the dishwasher.

Troels · 21/09/2018 22:46

All the cat bowls go in our dishwasher too. Big deal! Confused

MajesticWhine · 21/09/2018 22:48

Yes, I do. Never really gave it any thought. Not going to now either.

MercianQueen · 21/09/2018 22:57

Given the cats routinely lick my face after they've also licked God knows what (and I haven't yet died) I give precisely no shits about putting cat dishes in the same wash as human dishes Grin

Candymay · 21/09/2018 22:57

I don’t think the pet bowls are any different/ dirtier than any human food plates. I put the bowls in with our dishes in the dishwasher every day. Before.i had my cats I used to see a friend put his cat dish in the sink with his plates and I felt horrified. This was before I got my cats and fell in love with them. Now I have them and don’t feel they are dirtier than the rest of us also the dishwasher is so hot that I don’t worry about it all going in together.

Honeyroar · 21/09/2018 23:02

Why would a Komodo dragon make a difference?

Yes I occasionally put the dogs bowls in. The cats are plastic so the dogs deep clean them and I wash them in the sink. The rabbits never seems that dirty.

bullyingadvice2017 · 21/09/2018 23:09

Pet dishes? Is a dish not a dish? My dog gets whatever dish is nearest and gets to clean the plates. At least when you enter the teenagers room looking for stray plates and bowls there's nothing growing on them as dog has given them a good clean!

Lazypuppy · 21/09/2018 23:41

Do other people not let their dogs lick dinner plates clean then?!

My dog cleans all our plates before they go in the dishwasher, oh and he licks the cutlery clean in the dishwasher

OraangeSoda · 21/09/2018 23:45

My dog cleans all our plates before they go in the dishwasher, oh and he licks the cutlery clean in the dishwasher

Is this a joke? Disgusting.

straightjeans · 21/09/2018 23:59

That is disgusting, letting your pet eat from your plate and then lick it clean. Do your guests know what they are eating from?

MrsCrabbyTree · 22/09/2018 00:02

Would rinse pet bowls and then wash in dishwasher, if I had one. (Wouldn't mention the fact to friends though. Similar to the reason I don't want any other dog bar mine to lick me. But what they don't know will not hurt them, right?)

BMW6 · 22/09/2018 00:11

We let our dog lick our plates. He is very useful as he licks out saucepans too, so helps with washing up.

He likes the taste, easier to wash up. so what's not to love?

ILoveMyCaravan · 22/09/2018 00:31

We put our dog bowls in the dishwasher every day. They lick clean our plates before we put them in so don't really see the difference Grin

BaronessBomburst · 22/09/2018 00:37

I thought that dishwasher tablets were so alkaline that they sterilised stuff?

Mispelling · 22/09/2018 00:38

Recent researchers found more bugs in a man's beard than on the back of a dog!

You can draw your own conclusions there!

steff13 · 22/09/2018 00:43

Do other people not let their dogs lick dinner plates clean then?!

We do. Not always, but sometimes.
