To ask how much you enjoy your job on a 1-10 scale?

I was having a conversation with a work-hating friend recently and she claimed that very few people actually enjoy their job more than 2/10 (so they're mostly just doing it for the money) and that it's not realistic to search for a job you love.

I found this to be such a sad idea as I enjoy my job (teaching) a lot, at at least 8/10, and I think everyone should be able to find a job that they mostly enjoy if they look hard enough.

So how much do you enjoy your job on a scale of 1-10 and what do you think about people who just "work to live"?

An eight on average, but often a nine. Like a PP if I win the lottery I might go part time but I don't think I'd leave completely

Anniegetyourgun · 18/09/2018 21:32

Mine's about a minus five. But at least it's better than the last one.

As for what do you think about people who just "work to live"? - there's another option?

MrsStrowman · 18/09/2018 21:32

Even when I was younger and studying and just doing random jobs for money I never felt less than about a six about a job. Two would be horrific

GlossyGlossy · 18/09/2018 21:33

1

I walked out today Sad

NorthernRunner · 18/09/2018 21:33

Between 8-10 depending how close Ofsted are looming. Adore day to day aspect of my job, despise doing paperwork until 10pm!

Jb291 · 18/09/2018 21:33

Hovers between 3 and 5. Today is a 3

afreshnewname · 18/09/2018 21:34

The role itself 9.5 I adore it, I just absolutely despise my boss

OurMiracle1106 · 18/09/2018 21:34

9 I love my job 95% of the time. It’s not amazing pay but it’s not bad either. I get on with my colleagues and my manager is fantastic.

EmmaC78 · 18/09/2018 21:35

A steady 6.

bridgetreilly · 18/09/2018 21:36

Worst days: 6-7
Best days: 10

I think the lottery test is a good one: if you won the lottery, what would you change in your life? I would maybe drop a day a week (from 4 to 3) but I absolutely wouldn't give up my current job. So that tells me I'm pretty happy!

AnyFucker · 18/09/2018 21:37

9

DroningOn · 18/09/2018 21:38

5 to 7 depending on the type of week I'm having.

Occasionally a 4, never an 8!

whereareyousleep · 18/09/2018 21:38

5 I only stick at it because I like the people I work with and it's convenient as I have a baby and young child. The most annoying thinks I find is there's nowhere to progress to

saladfingers · 18/09/2018 21:39

Another teacher here and I love my job so I'd say 9 on a normal daySmile

ilovesooty · 18/09/2018 21:40

10 most days, thankfully.

LittleKitty1985 · 18/09/2018 21:40

So can everyone find a job they mostly enjoy and should we always encourage this? Or is it impossible for some people?

OP posts:
zebrarobot · 18/09/2018 21:42

Im about an 8/9 out of 10. Some days i feel a bit lower but generally when i step back and consider it i absolutely love the company i work for and the job i do(most days).

cheminotte · 18/09/2018 21:43

7-8.
Great to see lots of teachers loving their jobs.

Jb291 · 18/09/2018 21:43

Sorry Glossy. It's really shit when a job gets that bad that walking away to save your sanity becomes the best thing to do. I've been there and done that and came out on the other side. I still don't trust anyone though and it taught me about how awful some employers can be to their workers.

If I won the lottery today then my employers would never see me again.

I would miss the people but not the shite pay or the politics.

MaisyPops · 18/09/2018 21:46

About an 8 most days (9 on days when I get to only see students!)

On days when there's I'm asked to write at length what I'm doing for every bloody child who seems to fall into whatever group is the new priority, and I've got a parent on the phone kicking off because their darling is the victim of teacher bullying because they've been spoken to be their French teacher for not doing homework, and its 2pm but they've already rang the office 18 times since 1130am getting gradually more angry because I 'can't be bothered to call back and this proves you don't take bullying seriously' ... on those days it's about a 3 and I wonder why I traded my previous career for this.

Usually then a student does something lovely and reminds us why we do it.

I always said if I find myself hating my job then I'm leaving and doing something else.

StealthPolarBear · 18/09/2018 21:46

9.5. But I do see more people like your friend who want to work as little as possible and see work as an inconvenience. There's quite a few people on here too.

LittleMissPonsible · 18/09/2018 21:47

I’m a teacher too, and on a good day, it’s a ten.

Some days it’s a 2 though. I’m quite amazed that any teacher, or indeed any job that involves working closely with people, could give a steady level of enjoyment.

Girlsnightin · 18/09/2018 21:47
  1. Love it. If I was less than 8 I'd have to go find another one. Going to work is fun, demanding and I never get that Sunday night feeling.
sonjadog · 18/09/2018 21:49

I would say about 8-9. Also a teacher here. When I have got much below that, I've changed jobs. I've been fortunate that that has always been relatively easy for me to do.
