to remind Christmas temps to check how they are being paid

If you or your grown up kids are looking for temp employment, this is just a quick reminder about some big employers (such as Tesco) using prepaid cards such as Tuxedo cards to pay their temp staff 's wages instead of paying them direct into temp's bank accounts (despite taking bank account details at induction) or via cheque.

Why that's a problem is because you would incur a fee every time you withdraw money or pay bills with it etc.

I was personally affected by it last year and just wanted to remind everybody in case it starts creeping back, especially now that Christmas aisles are starting to be filled up and it won't be long until big employers start advertising for Christmas temps.

Here's a thread from last year that had people coming forward who were affected and loads of you helpful posters piled in with good advice too:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3086713-to-be-annoyed-by-being-paid-for-work-via-a-pocketmoney-card

In case anyone thinks this subject doesn't meet the criteria of an AIBU thread, here's a little controversy: I put milk in my cup first before adding tea. Everyone else is wrong. Grin

We could never be friends.

OP, the scientists would say you are right about the milk before the tea (it means proteins aren't denatured in the milk or something...).

However, YADDDNBU to remind everyone about temp working and certain large employers, especially at this time of year. Hopefully it is some use to DPs whose DCs are just starting out on this kind of work as well and may not have paid any attention to the thread last year.

extremelymaturecheese · 17/09/2018 13:31

Sorry - I just nipped away to grab myself a cup of tea.

I'm just going to assume the responses above Biddy are all in support of my milk-first philosophy as I sip.

I don’t take milk in my tea (Shock) but always put milk in first for other people. The real philistines are those who don’t use a teapot, teabags do not belong in a cup Angry

I remember the thread last year, yanbu to bring it to people's attention Tesco et al should be paying temp wages straight into the bank.

HelenaDove · 17/09/2018 18:06

i also remember the thread so bumping this.

Its bad enough that tax credits/UC has to prop up wages without this as well.

PurpleMac · 17/09/2018 18:40

Hiding but you're not really putting the milk in first if you're brewing the tea in the teapot....unless you're putting milk in the teapot too!

YANBU OP. Thank you for the reminder!

Neshoma · 17/09/2018 18:51

Can someone just tell me the benefit to Tesco of doing this? Does it avoid BACs fees or something?

LeftRightCentre · 17/09/2018 18:58

They save on admin fees, Neshoma.

Womaningreen · 17/09/2018 18:58

I hate that this is legal. So shocking. Should we be writing to MPs etc?

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 17/09/2018 18:59

I remember your thread. Bumping you !

honeysucklejasmine · 17/09/2018 19:00

Bump!

Glumglowworm · 17/09/2018 19:21

YABU

Tea is gross

YANBU about prepayment cards of course. Shocking that it’s legal!

MoonriseKingdom · 17/09/2018 19:26

I don’t drink tea and I like my coffee without milk but here’s a bump. I remember your thread from last year. Hope things are going well for you on the work front.

HelenaDove · 17/09/2018 19:32

And they wonder why many people cant afford to spend to keep the economy/high street going.

Incurring fees every time they withdraw money or pay a bill isnt going to help with that.

Capitalism eating itself.

MyDcAreMarvel · 17/09/2018 19:38

Milk first is fine it’s sugar in tea that should be illegal.
Yanbu op , I remember your thread last year .

katmarie · 17/09/2018 19:41

Yanbu op paying wages that way is a shitty practice, and it's also worth pointing out that if the fees for withdrawal take you under the minimum wage, then it might be illegal too. No one should have to pay to access their wages.

JustHereForThePooStories · 17/09/2018 19:46

I put milk in my cup first before adding tea

No wonder they didn’t trust you with actual money!
