to remind Christmas temps to check how they are being paid

If you or your grown up kids are looking for temp employment, this is just a quick reminder about some big employers (such as Tesco) using prepaid cards such as Tuxedo cards to pay their temp staff 's wages instead of paying them direct into temp's bank accounts (despite taking bank account details at induction) or via cheque.

Why that's a problem is because you would incur a fee every time you withdraw money or pay bills with it etc.

I was personally affected by it last year and just wanted to remind everybody in case it starts creeping back, especially now that Christmas aisles are starting to be filled up and it won't be long until big employers start advertising for Christmas temps.

Here's a thread from last year that had people coming forward who were affected and loads of you helpful posters piled in with good advice too:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3086713-to-be-annoyed-by-being-paid-for-work-via-a-pocketmoney-card

In case anyone thinks this subject doesn't meet the criteria of an AIBU thread, here's a little controversy: I put milk in my cup first before adding tea. Everyone else is wrong. Grin

That's outrageous! Payment method, not tea, ok tea too. I had no idea.

My DD worked on a Temp contract for Tesco last Christmas and was paid into her bank.

We did read the MN thread and she then emailed her HR contact, who told her she had never heard of pre-paid cards as a payment method. So I am guessing it is only certain stores that use it. DD also had friends working at other Tesco stores who had never heard of it.

DD is now back at another Tesco store working in her gap year, and again is paid into her bank account.

So whilst this thread is useful to highlight that payment on cards can happen, it is not a foregone conclusion that it will and shouldn't put people off trying for seasonal jobs with any retailer, esp teenagers.

Although my DD only worked about 9 weeks on the Xmas Contract, the experience presumably helped her get the long term Contract she is now on.

No one said people shouldn’t look for temp work over Christmas, the thread is to remind people to check how they’ll be paid.

HelenaDove · 27/09/2018 14:52

If you read the thread linked in the OP there was a lot of minimization and denial that it was happening.

No one here is saying that people should be put off.............it just gives people the chance to make it clear that they dont want to be paid by this method ask how they are going to be paid at job interview stage.

How are you supposed to pay direct debits etc like this?

FruitofAutumn · 27/09/2018 15:04

Tesco say it is only in cases where staff tell them they haven't got a bank account capable of accepting bacs payments

HelenaDove · 27/09/2018 22:57

Yes they insisted on that last year too The OP of last years thread had screenshots to disprove that Should still be there if you take a look.

It could be that this year though its as you say Autumn.
