Given the vile posting she made some yeara ago about people in debt, AIBU to enjoy the epicaricasy of watching her apply for an IVA to avoid bankruptcy? Grin

nowt to do with free speech - she made an accusation about another person accusing them of defacing a war memorial - they did not do this - they asked her to retract her comment and make a donation of £500 to charity - she refused so was taken to court

her choice to do that - because she likes publicity I guess

Her children will not suffer - it's an IVA not bankruptcy

ghostyslovesheets · 17/09/2018 13:40

£5000 sorry - and here is what Jack Monroe had to say

I’m supposed to be jubilant and celebratory but I feel quite mixed up. Having been close to the edge of bankruptcy myself, it’s a hideous situation to be in, but it was completely avoidable. Things are in place in that agreement to make sure her children are looked after. I’m a mother myself and I read it line by line to make sure that her children didn’t suffer as a result of what she’s done

I am pretty sure if the shoe was on the other foot KH wouldn't be so nice

HPFA · 17/09/2018 14:28

She published slanderous lies. She refused to retract or apologise for those lies. She broke the law and must be held accountable for it.

Spot on. Hopkins is not being "punished" for her opinions however horrible they are (and they are). She's facing the consequences of her own actions in lying about somebody.

To anyone thinking of defending her - if someone went round your office saying you slept with the boss to get a promotion would you shrug your shoulders and go "well, it's free speech"

puzzledlady · 17/09/2018 14:38

I won’t rejoice in someone else’s misfortune - it’s not very nice. I feel for her children though.

HPFA · 17/09/2018 14:48

Rejoicing in another persons misfortune

A misfortune is when the firm you're working for goes bust and you find yourself unable to pay the bills.

Facing the unpleasant consequences of your own deliberate actions is not misfortune

Helmetbymidnight · 17/09/2018 14:51

She wants a no-deal brexit.

Why would I feel sorry for her?

Twotailed · 17/09/2018 14:55

Say it louder for the people in the back!

daffodillament · 17/09/2018 15:01

Bloody hate her..and what about what she says about welsh being a dying language. It certainly isn't. What about Jack Monroe though, I quite like her tweets ? Always has something interesting to say not purposely controversial tosh like Hopkins.

HPFA · 17/09/2018 15:04

Elton John said it best on the difference between expressing an opinion and telling lies:

'They can say I'm a fat, old sod. They can say I'm an untalented bastard. They can call me a poof. But they mustn't lie about me.'

Sparklesocks · 17/09/2018 15:41

What I find baffling about the entire thing is had she just apologised and retracted her tweets she could’ve avoided the entire mess. It seems insane to potentially lose your financial security because you refuse to back-track on accusations with no evidence. If you tweet ‘Mrs G kicks puppies and loves stealing from hospitals’ for your millions of followers you can’t cry free speech when Mrs G takes your butt to court…

I came to the conclusion that she actually believes she's always right - about everything - even when there's actual proof (as in this case) that's she's wrong.

It must be partly the result of having so many people cheering her on when she writes articles or posts her appalling bile online.

Twotailed · 17/09/2018 17:42

I think that’s true. I think she genuinely believes that her opinions are so important and valid that it’s ok to lie, because even if she’s wrong on the facts she’s still right that Jack Monroe is an awful person and that any nasty accusations, no matter how untrue, are fair game.

JellyBears · 17/09/2018 18:37

I like Katie Hopkins she’s honest wish more people were. I don’t agree with everything she’s said but some stuff she’s spot on with. But I a aware this is snowflakes net.

AssignedNorthernAtBirth · 17/09/2018 18:53

She could've used a bit more honesty here.

butterflysugarbaby · 17/09/2018 18:54

YANBU. So glad this happened to her!

Twotailed · 17/09/2018 18:55

I like Katie Hopkins she’s honest

I mean she was literally found to be telling lies by the court but ok...

Helmetbymidnight · 17/09/2018 18:55

The only people I know who like her are racist dimwits.

Lweji · 17/09/2018 18:58

I kind of agree with Jack in not rejoicing, but I mostly feel for her children, although I've always felt sorry for them.

Ghostontoast · 17/09/2018 19:03

I’ve always felt sorry for her children too, and the other children in the families that Katie broke up by pursuing married men.

Lweji · 17/09/2018 19:04

I'd really struggle to find a redeeming feature in her.

YeTalkShiteHen · 17/09/2018 19:05

For all the things she’s said about disabled people, the racist/islamophobic things, the just outright fucking judgemental things, the misogyny and most of all her fucking comments after the Clutha Bar helicopter crash, I hope she’s learned a fucking lesson.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 17/09/2018 19:05

I don't think she's honest at all. I think she has worked out exactly the kind of hate she needs to spew in order to cause hurt and offence. She doesn't care about truth, only publicity.

GunpowderGelatine · 17/09/2018 19:10

@JellyBears a bit rich calling us snowflakes when you got upset because we didn't have sympathy for a peadophile apologist

londonrach · 17/09/2018 19:11

Who?

YeTalkShiteHen · 17/09/2018 19:12

Hubris springs to mind.
