AIBU to be a bit shocked at this teacher

My DS has come home with a list of spellings for English homework. One of them is the word ‘August’ for which the teacher has broken down into a nice memorable ‘All Ugly Girls Use Spot Treatment’! I feel this is totally unacceptable and a terrible message to put across to young kids.

But OP I agree with you. I wouldn't use that for August either!

DeathyMcDeathStarFace · 14/09/2018 21:16

I do not think I am easily offended but I agree it is inappropriate to use that mnemonic. What about coming up with a couple of suitable alternatives and then mentioning it (nicely) to the teacher and offering your alternatives?

I think the teacher wouldn't appreciate something like:

Always
Underestimate
Gormless
Useless
Stupid
Teachers

though.

(Disclaimer: Personally I appreciate teachers and think they do a great job. They are supporting my 4 ds's through school, one having aspergers and I thank them for their hard work.)

Scotinoz · 14/09/2018 21:16

I think there's more things to get worked up about, to be honest 😕

It's a mnemonic, and there's loads of weird ones. The weirder the easier to remember.

I still remember All Sin Tan Cos, by All Slags Tickle Cocks 😉

LuluJakey1 · 14/09/2018 21:19

It's crass and says something about the teacher's subtlety levels.

Canshopwillshop · 14/09/2018 21:20

Deathy - I also really appreciate the hard work most teachers do and I have never complained about one before nor am I easily offended. I just think this is v poor taste and I like how you have turned it round - wonder how many teachers would find your version unreasonable?!

I think it's a bit shit tbh but maybe it's a lame attempt to appeal to secondary pupils? It's a very teenage thing to say (I have a teenager and most utterances are inane and a bit offensive Confused)

Marie0 · 14/09/2018 21:30

I really think some people over think things, nobody would have batted an eyelid years ago, it would have been taken in the context it was conveyed i.e simply an acronym for remembering how to spell a word

HettieBettie · 14/09/2018 21:32

Canshopwillshop

Just want to add and im sure you do this - but please remind your daughter that really in real day modern life with voice recognition etc... spelling will be so much easier. I’ve seen too many lovely, bright kids come through this curriculum with damaged self confidence because of fucking spelling.

Faez · 14/09/2018 21:33

Giraffes would have worked so much better (because of the spots).

Which is precisely why we're still battling the same old sexist shit now.

Marie0 · 14/09/2018 21:48

Sexist shit - from an acronym of how to spell August?? LOL get a hobby

Cauliflowersqueeze · 14/09/2018 21:48

Tell your son to make up a new acronym.

Firsttimemum892 · 14/09/2018 21:51

Some awful comments on here , op yanbu it’s awful

UnrelentingFruitScoffer · 14/09/2018 21:51

It’s in poor taste but a VERY minor issue. Worse things happen in every school, every day. Leave it be.

PlatypusPie · 14/09/2018 21:51

It’s a bit off - not sure I’d be outraged. I like arranfan’s version better , with the giraffes - gently humorous.

Do you really not understand why posters are saying it's sexist and offensive?
