To have a fag in my garden if I want to?

I only smoke in my garden, never in the street or anywhere else. A footpath runs along the side of it adjoining a woodland area. Footpath is a short cut to supermarket, doctors, hairdressers. I smoke in the alleyway at the side of my garden which runs adjacent with the footpath.

I am getting sick of random people making loud comments when they pass by my fence like 'that stink is disgusting, ohh someone's smoking eurgghh' and etc.

WIBU to shout over to the next person to fuck off away from my fence if it bothers them rather than pausing and making comments?

I really can’t see that one cigarette smoked in the open air can go into someone’s home. I don’t smoke and have never smoked but I think people are just being controlling by objecting.

WomanInChains · 14/09/2018 18:17

It doesn't User. That's just typical MN hysteria.

Maybe it's down to a) your lack of imagination or b) your lack of experience of this.

I was in someone's home and a person in the ground floor flat stood outside their flat to smoke. The smoke rose ( as smoke tends to) and straight into the open bedroom and lounge windows of my friend's flat on the first floor. we smelled it before we looked out to spot the smoker.

vanillapieandicecream · 14/09/2018 18:20

I can smell it in a car, from cars around us. Smokers don't réalisé how much they actually stink.

And to say it's only one is very short sighted.

Ok, so you have a right to smoke.

We also have a right to breathe clean air.

It's just vile.

Moominfan · 14/09/2018 18:21

I'm an ex smoker so really sensitive to the smell. Wouldn't dream of commenting to anyone. It made me want to smoke more when people lectured me, always had the opposite effect

Bluelady · 14/09/2018 18:23

It's not just barbecues. My neighbour has had a full on bonfire three times in the last two weeks - great clouds of acrid black smoke billowing across the garden.

HermaphroditePug · 14/09/2018 18:23

Of course it’s up to you to smoke but if they feel aggrieved enough to comment then that’s their right.

Smoking should absolutely be banned. It’s a revolting habit. If you smoke you stink. You make everything around you stink. Don’t kid yourselves.

keyboardkate · 14/09/2018 18:28

@Bluelady,

We are not allowed to burn anything in a bonfire in our gardens. That is forbidden where I am. I am thankful for that at least.

But the BBQ is allowed and the smell and smoke lasts all day. But whatever. Not allowed to criticise the smell of that smoke as long as it is cooking something outdoors!

keyboardkate · 14/09/2018 18:31

There are some very judgmental people on here. Very.

I hope they are all perfect in their own lives, but it is easy to kick off on an anonymous forum and be holier than thou.

Bluelady · 14/09/2018 18:41

I wish they didn't allow them round here. I'd rather someone sat in my garden with a fag on any day of the week.

PunkrockerGirl59 · 14/09/2018 18:48

You were brave to start this thread, OP. The mere mention of the word smoking on MN brings about hysteria of epic proportions. Best to ignore and carry on enjoying your fags!

Charlie97 · 14/09/2018 20:25

@beeefcake do the obese people in McDonald's threaten your health???

NO!

You smoking threatens my health so do it your own home only!

Bluelady · 14/09/2018 20:41

So you know OP, Charlie?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/09/2018 20:58

There are some very judgmental people on here. Very

There always are where smoking's concerned. As I've said before, I'm convinced it's down to criticism of almost anything else being frowned on, so if folk want to "have a go" the smokers are a handy target

And no, I'm not a smoker ...

vanillapieandicecream · 14/09/2018 21:17

Judgemental? Possibly. But there literally are no pros to smoking. Not one tiny bit. So yup, I shall judge away.

Lweji · 14/09/2018 21:21

OP asks if she is BU.

Pps say yes - judgemental and hysterical

Pps say no - great people

You asked, you got opinions, shock.

You're entitled to smoke there. They're entitled to have and voice their opinions. You can speak to them and they can speak back. Can't really see any benefit of getting in to an argument over it, especially since they know where you live....

keyboardkate · 14/09/2018 21:27

Smoking is not illegal apart from those places where it actually is.

Honestly, as a non smoker, I just get on with the wafts of cig smoke now and then. I think all this hatred of smoke may be covering up for other things in those posters who profess to hate it!

It just all sounds very judgmental to me.

Storm4star · 14/09/2018 21:29

There are literally no pros to eating a donut or knocking back a whole bottle of wine. Yet people still do it. Why? Because they like it. It brings them pleasure.

I judge plenty of things but I don’t hurl abuse at people doing things I don’t agree with (not the above) but that doesn’t mean I abuse the person to their face. It is possible to just judge in your own head!

JacquesHammer · 14/09/2018 21:30

ppeatfruit · 14/09/2018 21:36

I hate BBQ's (All that cremated food is also, like smoking, a cancer risk) and bonfires too . Fireworks are not fabulous but at least they aren't every day. .

Biscuitsneeded · 14/09/2018 21:43

Can't you smoke inside your own house, since you have obviously made your peace with the smell and the harmful effects of smoking? Yes, I am judging. Because I am asthmatic, and because when people smoke in public spaces all over my children I get this weird urge to PROTECT my kids and prevent them from being harmed by other people's selfishness, and sometimes I find myself asking the smoker to move away from us. If that's offensive then I don't think I am too sorry. Your right to poison yourself does not trump my children's right to breathe and enjoy reasonable health.

Marie0 · 14/09/2018 21:44

lol people still moaning about smoking? Makes me want to reach for a fag myself :)

Aspenfrost · 14/09/2018 21:51

Just smoke inside your own house. You clearly love doing it so why not really fill the air with your favourite delicious scent?

Why waste the opportunity to luxuriate?

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 14/09/2018 21:53

It’s your garden op, in my opinion you can have a shit in it if you want, no bugger else’s business
