Aibu to take offense at homophobic router name?

I have been stalked so extremely sensitive I know to triggers, but some weird stuff happen ed where we just moved to, I don't think detail needed here, but when I went on WiFi I noticed a very close (neighbour) has router name that is myade up of (my email service provider name)+rgay.

I really didn't like the coincidence as my email account provider is not all that commkn and I got it because of all the stuff that was happening with my Hotmail accounts that were hacked.

But I have to see it each time I connect, and I do find it offensive; if not very much more than a little childish!

It's just plain homophobic and offensive (I think)

NobodyHasClockedOn

I’ve changed mine to
WhatKindOfFuckeryIsThis

@offtocornwall

it has since the 00's been used mostly by teenagers as a word to describe something a bit rubbish and is interchangeable with the word 'pants' to mean useless.

It's not interchangeable - the use of the word gay as a negative term / term of abuse IS homophobic - it often means more than just "a bit rubbish" - eg, weak, pathetic, etc. It's a common term of abuse in youtube comments for example (probably mostly teenagers and younger doing it there, yes) as is the word fa*t (definitely homophobic!) and disablist language - eg: retard/retarded. When someone is saying "don't be so gay" or "don't be so retarded" or "that's gay" / "that's retarded" - it's always a negative connotation. It's irrelevant whether or not the person being targeted is gay or disabled - that's not the point - the person using the words as a term of abuse is associating being gay or disabled with being stupid/weak/etc.

It's not the word gay that is homophobic (of course it isn't) but using it as an insult /term of abuse is homophobic.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 14/09/2018 14:44

I can't understand what's offensive about it. Just don't get it?

SneakyGremlins · 14/09/2018 14:53

Phil Mine has a 32 character limit

Sallystyle · 14/09/2018 15:01

I must be the only one who doesn't know how to change the router name.

Mine is boring TalkTalk random letters.

MissusGeneHunt · 14/09/2018 15:04

@U2HasTheEdge - mine is TalkTalk too, I literally just Googled 'how do I change my TalkTalk router name UK' and there's a good video about it.

Off to change mine now to 'IspendtoomuchtimeonMN' .....

OftenHangry · 14/09/2018 15:05

I am actually bit surprised you are asking whether it's homofophobic rather than "aibu to be freaked out by new neigbour having wifi named as my not so common provider after being stalked".

I do hope things get better for you.

You need to contact the police if you are being stalked etc because that is scary

InionEile · 16/09/2018 01:07

God, that update is scary smotheroffive. Given your recent experiences, I can’t blame you at all for having been jittery.

And I had no idea that WiFi names have become a way to get PA messages to your neighbours. If so, I should change mine to ‘pleasestopyourcatsfromleavingdeadrodentsonmylawn’ Hmm

I hope you can figure out what is going on and stay safe, OP.

SequinsOnEverything · 16/09/2018 01:31

smotheroffive · 16/09/2018 13:02

I'm here!!!! All is well.
Omg! Shit. I thought everyone was just having a laugh on my thread long after I left and I had been looking at it late last night.

It really does bring home to me how important it is to tell people when there's shit going on tho, I really didn't think anyone would think anything muchbof it and that it was part of stupid banter that was going on here, some of the posters further up thread did seem to take my point in the serious concern way that I did, and the offense it causes too.

I waited quite a while for any response and thinking thread is dead I went to bed.

I was being flippant the same as the pp, but everyone seemed to have gone. I hate that I might have genuinely worried anyone. It's crap that this is my life now and I'm SOOO sorry.
