I have been stalked so extremely sensitive I know to triggers, but some weird stuff happen ed where we just moved to, I don't think detail needed here, but when I went on WiFi I noticed a very close (neighbour) has router name that is myade up of (my email service provider name)+rgay.

I really didn't like the coincidence as my email account provider is not all that commkn and I got it because of all the stuff that was happening with my Hotmail accounts that were hacked.

But I have to see it each time I connect, and I do find it offensive; if not very much more than a little childish!

It's just plain homophobic and offensive (I think)

Thanks both, and I think that is hilarious buttermilk i just might. The neighbours who have all been talking and reporting activity will see it and find it hilarious too!

I can't say i've ever seen people use their names on their routers, only businesses or random names

I do think you have a point op.
I don't think it is aimed at you or personal, but using gay as an insult is homophobic.

teenagers round here use it all the time - You're so gay - is a insult.

So, I think it is rude/insulting, but not personal in any way

smotheroffive · 14/09/2018 00:07

Thank you drama there are some amongst us that see it as homophobic.

I think its way over time out to be using it as an insult.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 14/09/2018 00:59

Name yours to something in response.

I named my iPhone "Which of you twats voted for Brexit?" so that other commuters would see it every time they looked for the train wifi.

safariboot · 14/09/2018 01:01

It's mildly offensive, but is there any reason to think your new neighbour knows your email address?

RosiesYellowDress · 14/09/2018 01:53

@Aridane is there a sticker or something on bottom of ur router?

Should give add & username and password to your hub settings

jcyclops · 14/09/2018 02:15

Strangely, on my list of wi-fi connections there is a yahoorgay.
As my real name is Yahoo, I am terribly offended. Wink

YANBU to be nervous considering you have been stalked! But I'm sure it is nothing to do with you Thanks

It is also homophobic and childish.

Blendingrock · 14/09/2018 03:13

My mother-in-law's name was Gay. Could be completely innocent.

steff13 · 14/09/2018 04:06

Our neighbors' surname is Foutz, and theirs is called Foutz5. Ours used to be BlueBox and BlueBox2, until #1 son got hold of the password and changed them to (his name)internet and everyoneelsesinternet.

HappenedForAReisling · 14/09/2018 04:19

One of our neighbours' is called 'mingedribble' envy I think some people must let their bloody teenagers sort the WiFi out

OP, even though you don't like it I would suggest you just ignore it. You know it's nothing to do with you and I think complaining about it might bring more aggro than you need. Just let it slide right past you.

offtocornwall · 14/09/2018 07:38

I think your issue here is about what you perceive to be homophobic language.. and to be offended by it.
As in .. "giffgaffaregay.." .

The problem is that language meaning changes all the time, it's a continuous reinvention of words and meaning.
As everyone knows 'gay' used to mean happy and carefree. Or bright and colourful.

Since the 70's it's been a word associated with being homosexual. - However times have moved on and whilst it is still used as an identifier for homosexuals (both self identification and 3rd party reference) without any form of derogatory connotations - it has since the 00's been used mostly by teenagers as a word to describe something a bit rubbish and is interchangeable with the word 'pants' to mean useless.

I have heard the expression 'no, don't ask Jake, his gay ' used only today. It was about a computer problem ! and between two other boys discussing who to ask help solve it. In this context the 'Jake is gay' comment has absolutely nothing to do with Jakes sexuality. It refers solely to lack technological competence to deal with the problem.
I accept that 20 years a go, 's/he's gay' would have been insulting but time, general acceptance of homosexuality in the mainstream and our children never knowing a time when gay relationships were anything other than completely acceptable - takes any negative /homophobic connection away.

It has been replaced with a completely different meaning of dull /boring /nerdy and unexciting . I often get told 'Mum ! Stop being gay' when I want my teenagers home before midnight.. the irony is that it now holds the exact opposite meaning to that of its original known use.

YeTalkShiteHen · 14/09/2018 07:40

offtocornwall but every use of it in common use is a negative one. Maybe not directly because of someone’s sexuality, but the fact is that using the word gay as any kind of insult, whether it’s aimed directly at someone’s sexuality or not, keeps negative connotations associated with the word.

Also, it’s just lazy and pretty ignorant.

JustDanceAddict · 14/09/2018 07:42

Sounds like it’s a teen having a ‘laugh’ to me.

Tartsamazeballs · 14/09/2018 07:53

Mine is wecanhearyouhavingsex but we'll probably change it to shutyourdogsup soon, you are taking it way too personally
