It was such a staple of my 70's/80's youth and not being a parent I wondered what, if anything, it has morphed into.

Two or three times a year or occasionally if we have guests. A lot of effort for 2 carnivores and a vegetarian and so many greasy pans to wash up.

But I love it when I do. Gone cooked is the best.

toptomatoes · 10/09/2018 13:54

My kids love roast dinner so we have it most weeks!

Kezzamo · 10/09/2018 13:56

Yep!

Taffeta · 10/09/2018 13:56

Autumn and winter we will often have roast once at the weekend. Sometimes Sat sometimes Sun sometimes evening but usually 3ish, depends if we are all around at that time and I’m available a few hours before.

If not then we might have a curry or casserole I’ve made ahead.

Never have them Spring or Summer.

OkMaybeNot · 10/09/2018 13:58

Meat's too expensive for them to be a thing in our house, unless it's roast chicken or a heavily discounted joint of other meat.

Jaffacakesfordinner · 10/09/2018 14:01

My DP hates them. He doesnt eat gravy,he doesnt eat mash,he doesnt enjoy many veg. I love a roast!
I invite my parents round for a roast on sundays when hes working (3 in every 6).

When/If were lucky enough to have children ill have every finget crossed that they love a roast so hes the minority 😂

Wacadu · 10/09/2018 14:03

My DC don't really like meals at the weekend. They're more pickers and will eat little and often so we never do a roast.

Shutityoutart · 10/09/2018 14:06

Love a roast and so do my 3 and 6 year old. Lots of veg, Yorkshire puds and gravy. Yum!

BlooperReel · 10/09/2018 14:06

An occasional thing in the Blooper house, its much more appreciated if its once every six weeks or couple of months instead of every week.

Scotinoz · 10/09/2018 14:07

I do a roast most weeks; kids happy, husband very happy, and I get to skulk in the kitchen slaving over a hot stove, whereas in reality, I just chuck in in the oven then drink gin and read the Sunday supplements 😁

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/09/2018 14:12

Yes - deffo roasts most Sundays. Yorkshire puds, gravy, 53 different types of vegetables.

Is delicious!!!!!

(But a bugger in the summer, especially the you wear glasses, and open the oven door and are rendered BLIND!)

SoundofSilence · 10/09/2018 14:12

4 or 5 times a year only, because DH works most Sundays and I generally spend the weekends catching up with cleaning, shopping and taking the kids out. When we do, it's planned about a week in advance and a big event.

MaryShelley1818 · 10/09/2018 14:15

Another who tends not to have time to make Sunday Roast!
We have 2 family days together (weekends) so tend to be out and about doing things - swimming, Baby Gymnastics, farm, park etc We’re more likely to have bacon sandwiches for brunch then spend the day out and about.
I do sometimes make a Roast Dinner during the week but rarely a Sunday. We sometimes visit a carvery too.

AromaticSpices · 10/09/2018 14:15

Roasts have just come back on our menu after the summer. Yesterday's was roast beef, yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, roast cauliflower, then steamed broccoli, boiled carrots/sweetcorn/peas, and gravy.

We usually have one most Sundays throughout autumn/winter, probably 3/4 sundays a month. Sometimes it varies slightly so we might do mini toad-in-the-holes instead of a joint of meat.

Still very much a thing in our house!

ChillUrBeans · 10/09/2018 16:04

My parents still do a Sunday roast every week - even when it was really hot.

We have a roast at least once a week but usually in the week rather than a Sunday now our kids are grown up. We love crusty bread and cheese on a Sunday.

mrsaxlerose · 10/09/2018 16:12

still a thing in my house . then again im a child of the 70,s. If I don't do I roast on a sunday I would be haunted by the ghost of my nan and dad for lowering standards and being lazy

clippityclop · 10/09/2018 17:10

Every Sundays here, we love it. And I always do extra for the leftovers for curry, soup etc on Monday/Tuesday.

bengalcat · 10/09/2018 17:13

Definately - one if my favourite meals and so easy to cook - occupied have one midweek if we've missed a Sunday

PaulDacreRimsGeese · 10/09/2018 17:17

It's not just British people. Irish people do it too.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 10/09/2018 17:18

Absolutely! Yesterday was beef, 3 green veg, roast pots and Yorkshires followed by blackberry and apple crumble Smile. First roast of the season and 6 of us at the table - lovely. Usually have lateish brekkie before DCs sports then have a roast or other “big” meal around 4. Love it.

Loonoon · 10/09/2018 17:23

It’s our favourite meal. My family is incredibly fussy. One is veggie, DH is v picky about veg, another one only likes very plain, bland food. A roast dinner is perfect for us - lay it all out on the table and people help themselves to the bits they like (obviously the potatoes and Yorkshires are cooked in a vegetable oil and I serve veggie and meat gravies).

It’s also my go-to meal when we have company for the same reason.

TheFallenMadonna · 10/09/2018 17:26

Pretty much every Sunday.

sprinklesandsauce · 10/09/2018 17:31

It's my favourite meal. My mum still cooks roast every week, but we don't go round every weekend. I do mini versions of roast as it is just 2 of us and I love chicken but don't eat meat on the bone, so will do roast potatoes and veg etc, but with a chicken breast, or pork loin etc.

AnneProtheroe · 10/09/2018 18:07

We have a roast dinner pretty much every Sunday.
And Roast Potatoes with pretty much every meal

IHaventACluedo · 10/09/2018 18:28

They are very much a part of our family culture and one of the British traditions that I will adamantly keep alive.

We cook one 3/4 Sundays and if we don't it is because we have been invited out or are trying a local pub for their roast. During this summer heat wave we swapped it for a paella or BBQ. We go the whole hog with roast pots, roast sweet pots, yorkshires, 3 veg and usually have a shoulder of pork, lamb or beef. DS1 is a great chef and makes dessert. We make loads and have it again on Monday night. My DH is great at making yorkshire's and gravy from scratch.

DH and DC love it and we often invite people around for Sunday lunch too. Our Sunday's are generally dog walk in county, then making roast and chilling in the house. Much like Christmas day!
