Sunday Roasts, are they still a thing?

It was such a staple of my 70's/80's youth and not being a parent I wondered what, if anything, it has morphed into.

I maybe make a roast once a month. Then eat out for a roast another 2x a month.

I like the social aspect of hosting it. Having people around or headong the pub.

Plus gravey is my fave food.

SavageBeauty73 · 10/09/2018 10:29

I'll start doing roasts again in October.

Satsumaeater · 10/09/2018 10:32

We have a roast dinner nearly every Sunday except when it was really hot in the summer. We all like different things in our house, so a roast dinner is one thing that I can cook that we can all eat and gets some vegetables into my teenage son.

Also very easy to do, I am not the best cook but it's difficult to mess up a roast dinner.

BlackrockMum · 10/09/2018 10:34

still current in our house alright, my dh fav dinner of the week, especially if mushy peas are involved!! we have one vegetarian who has something else like a nut roast with vegetable gravy, and all the rest of what we are eating, so yes often leftovers that are used on Mondays. I suppose the thing I do that makes it different from other dinners is I do lots of different veg, most week nights it would just be one type of veg if the veg isn't already in the meal, and we usually have a nice desert

Namethecat · 10/09/2018 10:37

4/5 times a year max. Obviously not including Christmas day.

holycityzoo · 10/09/2018 10:38

Yes it's still a thing in our house. I don't tend to do it so much in the summer but sometimes we have a roast chicken with salad,French bread and dips or new potatoes.
I made the first roast for a while last night and my 4dc (and dh) we're raving about it and all ate really well so I will be making the, more regularly now.

wink1970 · 10/09/2018 10:39

Monday night roasts for us, as Sunday is a 'can eat garlic' day.

Tonight = a Chateaubriand (not usual, but it was taking up my freezer space) and cauliflower, carrots, roasties, yorkshires etc. I recommend a multi-tier pan-top steamer for minimum washing up afterwards.

shockedballoon · 10/09/2018 10:40

The only meal where DS regularly clears his plate, veg and all. He'll even eat cabbage if it's slathered in gravy. We have a roast roughly 3 out of 4 sundays.

user1471426142 · 10/09/2018 10:41

Yes but not really over the summer. I realised this week is hadn’t had one in ages and I am desperate for a good roast. Once autumn hits it’ll be every week.

elQuintoConyo · 10/09/2018 10:41

We are a small family of 3: me, DH, DS. DH's (big) family has had a serious falli g out and have treated him (and therefore us) atrociously, so we don't have big family get-togethers. I'm abroad from my family, so that's that.

We're more likely to invite friends round for a mid-week curry dinner or a Saturday tapas lunch.

Us 3 always eat together at the dinner table and i cook from scratch. Every day.

Sunday roasts obviously just aren't as ingrained in me.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 10/09/2018 10:43

In autumn and winter, we have one around once every two or three weeks. The DC love it but it's really not my favourite kind of food. I'm much more likely to make a big cannelloni and salad or something.

Any food comes with a set of strict rules, such as we have to have this, and we always eat at exactly this time, etc. tend to make me recoil a bit Grin

Rudgie47 · 10/09/2018 10:46

No we haven't had them since the 1980s.
I think they are more for old people really.

BikeRunSki · 10/09/2018 10:48

We had one yesterday

I was brought up with the idea that a Sunday roast was proper and decent and people who didn't have Sunday roasts were lazy and weird.

The council estate I grew up on used to smell of meat and vegetables all day on Sunday. It was lovely.

I went through a few years of not having Sunday roasts but now we do every single week. It's not always a joint of meat and vegetables but it's always something like Shepherd's Pie, Sausage and mash. Something big, stodgy and filling.

When we have a proper roast (joint of meat), we go a bit OTT and basically have a Xmas dinner... roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, roasted vegetable, three types of stuffing, pigs and blankets.

There are only ever two of us. If we had visitors on a Sunday [shudder], we wouldn't cook a roast.

LEELULUMPKIN · 10/09/2018 10:53

Most definitely a thing in this house. My DH is a fantastic cook and really enjoys all the faff even though it's just the two of us eating it.

One of my death row meal items would be a roast dinner!

LBOCS2 · 10/09/2018 10:59

It's a thing here, but not a very regular one. Probably once every couple of months - more frequent in the winter. Every second Sunday DH is travelling with DSS all day so there's not much point in me doing it for half of our family.

I also tend to roast a chicken in the midweek once a fortnight or so. Or if I'm doing traybaked thighs and there are good juices I'll do a gravy to go with those anyway.

I grew up in a household where Sundays were for a roast dinner and it was non-negotiable.

Shoxfordian · 10/09/2018 11:04

I don't like them much so not a thing in our house

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 10/09/2018 11:09

Oh god, yes. I love a sunday afternoon with the fire lit, the rain streaming down the windows and a lump of something turning delicious in the oven.

expatmigrant · 10/09/2018 11:10

We might have the the occasional roast in the winter. DC not too keen.
Made chicken Katsu curry yesterday.

anonymousbird · 10/09/2018 11:12

Every week! Some adjustments in the summer / on holiday but otherwise always!

Rebecca36 · 10/09/2018 11:18

Yes it is though parents, when finally on their own and not having visitors, tend to do something else, maybe chops rather than a joint.
Going out for a Sunday roast at a carvery is also popular. However there's no compulsion to have one. Husband and I had spag bol yesterday, he cooked it and it was lovely, yum.

I do love a roast though. Fruit pie or crumble with custard for pud.

MrsCar · 10/09/2018 11:19

Yes, I look forward to it all week!

Pinkyponkcustard · 10/09/2018 11:22

Yes every week come rain or shine at my parents house with proper Yorkshire puddings too.

I love it as all the family gets together for it, we have a glass of wine and chat.

Not sure if I could be bothered to do a full Sunday lunch myself though in the future.

CMOTDibbler · 10/09/2018 11:27

Nope. We only have two days a week to do things, so we're out and about at the weekend - cycling, swimming, running, walking, or boring but necessary stuff like shopping.

Occasionally we go out for a roast lunch, but are more likely to have something else as lunch out
