Sunday Roasts, are they still a thing?

It was such a staple of my 70's/80's youth and not being a parent I wondered what, if anything, it has morphed into.

We dont.

pacer142 · 10/09/2018 11:34

Nope, not at all. Can't remember the last time we had a "roast" whether Sunday or any other day. That kind of food simply doesn't appeal to me, nor does the formal once-per-week eating together lark. More often than not, we're out doing something interesting on a Sunday, and even if we're in, we just eat normal meals we'd eat on other days - yesterday it was beans on toast for lunch and lasagne for tea. It's a throwback from the old days when families ate together after church and only had a new/fresh piece of meat once a week.

TuttiFrutti · 10/09/2018 11:38

Always, always, always!

And I don't understand people who say it's too difficult, or they don't have time. It's the easiest sort of cooking in the world. Just buy a leg of lamb, or whole chicken, or joint of beef, and stick it in the oven for a couple of hours at a low heat. Less work than a stir-fry.

If you want to make stuffing or complicated sauces that's up to you, but personally I don't. I buy ready-made gravy. I do make roast potatoes which are one of the most delicious foods known to man. And just one other vegetable: carrots, peas or broccoli.

longtompot · 10/09/2018 11:43

We have them pretty much every week. ED loves them, and I try to make them for her when she is back from uni. YD and DH love them too. DS though does not like roasts. He loves meat, he loves roast spuds but he doesn't like a Sunday roast. Finds it stressful! He doesn't do anything to help towards them, so not sure what is so stressful about them Hmm Still, his GF likes them too, and I do so will continue to make them Smile

MargaretDribble · 10/09/2018 11:45

Yes, almost every week. We stick the meat and potatoes in the oven before church, and when we get back put the other veg on, make gravy etc. We often have family round for Sunday lunch and it is a really easy meal.

ForalltheSaints · 10/09/2018 11:47

It may not be a roast but Sunday lunch is still an important part of the week.

Singlenotsingle · 10/09/2018 11:48

We go out to a carvery or a pub restaurant for a roast most Sundays.

dueanotherchange · 10/09/2018 11:52

We had a roast yesterday evening in the garden! Weather was better than I expected.

Was yum.

Jitters22 · 10/09/2018 11:53

I think they are more for old people really.

What utter bollocks!

Westwing1 · 10/09/2018 11:58

Every Sunday here unless it's a really hot summers day, followed by family movie time, teenager rolls eyes and complains every time and then (usually) loves it.

stegosauruslady · 10/09/2018 12:20

I'm currently revamping my kitchen, with making Sunday roasts easy as a main aim!

I love them, I love taking the time to do some proper cooking. I do wish that DP had more Sundays off work so we could have them all together!

EvaHarknessRose · 10/09/2018 12:30

I often do a roast chicken, sometimes pork or beef (too costly often). I only cook it if I feel like (and absence makes the heart grow fonder with roasts, and me more appreciated.) I have a fantasy that someone will make me a good roast one day! I am starting to home make gravy again too.

Siennamiller · 10/09/2018 12:34

Love a Sunday roast, last night e had roast chicken and roast potatoes, veg.
Yesterday morning we went and picked blackberries and s I also mage apple and blackberry crumble which we had with custard. Yum!
My boys don’t like gravy, they have it without.

Amanduh · 10/09/2018 12:34

Made my first since May yesterday.. it was heavenly!

Mrsramsayscat · 10/09/2018 12:39

We do them sometimes, but not in the summer. And not if we're too busy. We tend to have them later, too, more like teatime.

tillytrotter1 · 10/09/2018 13:04

Only rarely, too near breakfast time usually!

OrcinusOrca · 10/09/2018 13:05

Not the done thing in our house.

Fireworks91 · 10/09/2018 13:06

We do! Always have done. If we are busy we may sous vide or slow cook a joint and just whack on some potatoes and veg when needed.

5Yearplan4000 · 10/09/2018 13:08

Can’t remember last time we cooked a roast. Or ate Sunday lunch. We are usually out and eat in the evening on a Sunday. Growing up we had a roast every week after church though. It fees like a different life.

Siennamiller · 10/09/2018 13:22

We always have our roast in the evening, it’s much easier. We eat at about 6.

Mummymummums · 10/09/2018 13:25

We don't usually do one, it's quite rare for us. We're usually out and about during the day and by the time we're back it's too late to start a roast. It's something I mean to do more often but life gets in the way!

NutElla5x · 10/09/2018 13:36

I do a Sunday roast most weeks-not necessarily on a Sunday mind because sometimes other things are happening.I usually have a couple of glasses of wine whilst cooking it and actually quite enjoy it and think it's one of the easier meals to cook.I also like all that yummy left over meat that can be used for sandwiches the next day or made into a stir fry or something.I'm getting hungry now.

GirlFliesHome · 10/09/2018 13:44

I love a Sunday roast. We have it early about 5.30 so I can clear up and then settle in.

It's a little less enjoyable for me to cook though since DH became vegan and DS 2 has food and texture issues. I just feel oddly guilty if I make a roast leg of something and no-one else is eating it. I cook up a tray of stuffing separately so it is vegan, and DH eats that as his 'main' plus the veg.

If I am home during the week on my own I often whip up a mini roast. Chicken thighs with cauli cheese..... mmmmmmm

KatieMarieJ · 10/09/2018 13:47

It was always a thing growing up for me but now with my own kids we maybe do a roast once every couple months at most. Although we always have a proper roast with trimmings, I just don't have time to do that every Sunday and honestly I wouldn't want to. Far too heavy.

YessicaHaircut · 10/09/2018 13:49

We had one yesterday and it was lovely! If we’re at home it’s not too much of a faff to make (just me and DH) and I usually do roast chicken and then take the leftovers for work lunches for as long as it lasts. Neither of us ever really fancies a roast during the summer but now it’s a bit cooler we’ll probably have one every other week.
