Sunday Roasts, are they still a thing?

It was such a staple of my 70's/80's youth and not being a parent I wondered what, if anything, it has morphed into.

@ newyearnewme
Personally I don't like roasts, heavy stodgy food has never appealed to me

How ridiculous! Do you only ever eat lettuce leaves and steamed fish then?

Pebblesandfriends · 10/09/2018 18:42

3 out of 4 Sundays here (We often opt for pizza on the other Sunday!)

EdWinchester · 10/09/2018 18:46

They are not my bag at all, but everyone else here loves them. Dh does one with all trimmings every couple of weeks.

If it were my choice, it'd be christmas day only.

Meet0nTheIedge · 10/09/2018 18:50

Once every few months here, DS and DH aren't keen and there are many things I'd rather spend Sunday doing than cooking a roast, although I do like them. DD and I indulge in a carvery on our own every now and then.

Moominfan · 10/09/2018 19:17

Nope find them bland, once in a blue moon. More exciting foods to be eaten :)

Pompom42 · 10/09/2018 19:22

Still a thing in this house. We have it every Sunday unless it's a very hot day or we are going out for the day, so I'd say definitely 42 ish weeks out of a 52 week year.
We alternate between Lamb, Chicken and Beef and occasionally gammon.
If I buy the bits and we didn't have it Sunday for any reason I'd cook it on the Monday.

TSSDNCOP · 10/09/2018 19:28

Every Sunday even in summer unless we are invited elsewhere. People are invited to join us at least once a month.

rabbitmat · 10/09/2018 19:55

I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves a roast! We have one most Sundays. I find them quite easy to cook and don't mind spending a bit more time on them as we have quick meals in the week.

wentmadinthecountry · 10/09/2018 20:26

Cooked one yesterday - first since before the summer. Took me ages because I seemed to have forgotten about timings. Was lovely though. We probably have it once a month or so - often invite my dad and his wife over as they'd never cook it for themselves at 92 and 90!

Bunchofdaffodils · 10/09/2018 21:35

Yes every Sunday. Who said bland?! Yesterday we had chicken breasts stuffed with cheese and sage and onion. Rosemary roast potatoes, honeyed parsnips, red cabbage in red wine vinegar, carrots and peas. With gravey.

April2020mom · 10/09/2018 21:40

We occasionally have a Sunday roast lunch. The last time was two months ago but this upcoming weekend I’m hosting a Sunday roast dinner. I tend to limit meat however and include lots of vegetables and fruit instead. Only meat permitted is ham or chicken.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 10/09/2018 21:40

How ridiculous! Do you only ever eat lettuce leaves and steamed fish then?

Is that the only alternative 'heavy stodgy food'? Confused

AvonCallingBarksdale · 10/09/2018 21:48

Not bland at all, you can do all kinds of fancy stuff, especially with the veggies. And it really doesn’t take that long - just need to be organised with timings. It’s pretty sociable too - if you have friends over everyone hangs out in the kitchen diner anyway.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 10/09/2018 21:51

That's all I could think of at the time shesgot Blush

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 10/09/2018 21:53

Fair enough InSpace Grin

candlefloozy · 10/09/2018 21:56

We used to have one every week at home. Then a salad with a big pot of tea for tea time. We sometimes have one and thinking back to being at home and doing that makes me feel so lovely inside. I think I might have to start doing it for my family again.

Skyejuly · 10/09/2018 22:07

Same here candle.

Meet0nTheIedge · 10/09/2018 22:18

We never have them at lunchtime apart from on Christmas Day, even then it's late afternoon, it would never occur to me to do a cooked meal in the middle of the day the rest of the year. If we have one at all it will be in the evening.

smudgedlipstick · 10/09/2018 22:25

Yep, most Sunday's!!

QuinionsRainbow · 10/09/2018 23:06

Yes. DH cooked us a lovely one this evening.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 10/09/2018 23:18

We've stopped at the moment, there being just 2 of us in the house. When we move, we'll have the kids and DGS round at least once a month. DSIL is going to take me on a deer shoot this winter and teach me field butchery. Mm, venison.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 10/09/2018 23:19

No chance when it's warm.
Occasionally if I can convince DH to cook us one when the weather is bad but now half of us are veggie there aren't really any nice options.

Would much rather go out and pay someone else to make me one.

Growing up we had one every Sunday in the winter months, BBQ in the summer

Thesearmsofmine · 10/09/2018 23:24

We had one every Sunday growing up. I’ve never been s huge fan so I only make one every couple of months or so.

Juls1980 · 10/09/2018 23:27

100%

Nicknamesalltaken · 10/09/2018 23:28

It’s a really important part of our family week. It’s a big meal (so no scoffing and scarpering and everyone loves (and agrees on) it, plus it is non-negotiable.

My DCs are so busy, as they get older sitting down together is harder. I also think that to be invited for sunday dinner is special. When girlfriends and boyfriends sit down with us it makes me very happy.

Roast meat, Yorkshires, stuffing, three veg, mash and roast pots, gravy.

Dog gets the leftovers. Everyone’s a winner.
