Sunday Roasts, are they still a thing?

It was such a staple of my 70's/80's youth and not being a parent I wondered what, if anything, it has morphed into.

If you're not British the question doesn't arise.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 09/09/2018 22:11

Still a thing in my house. Well probably 9/10 Sunday’s at least.

9amtrain · 09/09/2018 22:13

They are absolutely still a thing!

NewYearNewMe18 · 09/09/2018 22:13

Depends who is home or who is visiting.

Personally I don't like roasts, heavy stodgy food has never appealed to me

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 09/09/2018 22:13

It wasn’t really every Sunday for me as a youth but I want to make it a thing for my family, the idea of having everyone in one place at one time in all its technicolour glory makes me feel very happy.

Yes, basically I want the OXO family ideal for my lot x

PlatypusPie · 09/09/2018 22:13

An occasional winter thing for us.

cleowasmycat · 09/09/2018 22:15

Today

Sunday Roasts, are they still a thing?
bitheby · 09/09/2018 22:15

Yep. I live alone and I made myself a roast about 2 or 3 Sundays a month.

CherryPavlova · 09/09/2018 22:15

Absolutely a thing unless it’s just us two. Usually a few turn up to eat. We don’t necessarily through the summer but autumn through to spring definitely.

BarbaraofSevillle · 09/09/2018 22:16

We haven't had a Sunday roast since about May. I decided I CBA to cook one again and vowed not to until Christmas.

Haven't really missed it that much, and if I did, I think I'd go to a carvery instead of cooking one myself.

I think what's changed since the 70/80s is that Sunday is more a day for shopping or leisure activities so people eat out/don't have time to cook a roast and also the massive increase in the range of food easily available.

There's so much more interesting food around and people eat out so much more. The days of doing a roast on Sundays and using the leftovers for the next couple of days aren't as common any more (making a chicken or other roast last more than one meal predates Mumsnet by several decades at least).

golddustwomen · 09/09/2018 22:16

Not every Sunday, it was when I still lived at home though.
I find them a right a faff to make and so much to wash up! We had one today though as had family over.

SpinMill · 09/09/2018 22:17

Definitely still a thing for us. We either cook one at home or go out for a roast on a Sunday. Growing up we always had a traditional Sunday dinner so I suppose I've just carried that on.

sanssherif · 09/09/2018 22:17

My kids hate roast dinners.
One refuses gravy
The other is vegetarian
Neither like stuffing
It kinds of ruins it tbh
I force them to eat Xmas dinner but just think fking hell what's wrong with you all!

Excitedforxmas · 09/09/2018 22:17

Nearly every Sunday! Love them and then slob out with a movie

Kintan · 09/09/2018 22:18

It's definitely a thing for us - but generally only in the autumn and winter.

Cherry321 · 09/09/2018 22:19

Yup. Best meal of the week! Star

ShrodingersSturdyPyjamas · 09/09/2018 22:19

we have one every sunday evening. occasionally adapted but something with roast spuds definitely.

we are vegetarian though so no meat, just all the veg.

ShatnersBassoon · 09/09/2018 22:19

We had one today. It seemed to mark the first Sunday of non-Summer, and we'll now have one most weeks until Summer.

madeyemoodysmum · 09/09/2018 22:20

Love a roast even more when I'm. Or cooking it.

Most often a winter dinner for us tho. In summer we like to b que.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 09/09/2018 22:20

Probably one a month in summer but some variation of it every week in winter. My family favourite is the full roast trimmings but with good quality sausages rather than s joint of meat Blush Everyone gets excited when that’s in the menu, and steak pie or cobbler. We love a bit of winter stodge!

TeeBee · 09/09/2018 22:20

Still a thing in my house.

alldaysleeper · 09/09/2018 22:20

Yes but not so much during summer. DH does a great Sunday roast and will not allow me to lift a finger including washing up. Always love a family Sunday roast at MIL who is an amazing cook. Only difference is nowadays we tend to eat it later in the day than we used to.

CrAzYmUmOf2 · 09/09/2018 22:21

Really try to have one, but my kids go
To their dads every other wkd so they don't always.
Had one today though, was lush.
Love a Sunday dinner x

Catspyjamazzzz · 09/09/2018 22:21

I grew up with them. Sundays were food and being lazy.
I am faaar to busy to give the time up for it.

MinecraftHolmes · 09/09/2018 22:22

Growing up in the 90s they were a thing - Sunday dinner was either a roast or a steak pie.

We very rarely have a roast now. If we do it’s in winter.
