It was such a staple of my 70's/80's youth and not being a parent I wondered what, if anything, it has morphed into.

We have one about twice a month, except in the height of summer. It's just the 2 of us and I love having the leftovers to use during the week (or to freeze).

Chicken roast today, Rogan Josh tomorrow and rest frozen for later.

prettypinkdaisies · 09/09/2018 22:53

We had roast beef, new potatoes, broccoli, green beans and carrots, and it was delicious. The beef was slow roasted, vegetables took very little time to prepare, enjoyed by all.

QueenOfMyWorld · 09/09/2018 22:54

I do a Saturday dinner in our house! Full roast just different day

RomanyRoots · 09/09/2018 22:54

It is in our house, but not as often, depending on whose at home or visiting.

Stressedoutmamma · 09/09/2018 22:55

every Sunday I do get sick of them but yes need every week to remain British

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/09/2018 22:56

lowtide · 09/09/2018 22:57

@QueenOfMyWorld
You know that’s actually against the law of Britishness. And once we are fully brexited I think there might be a death penalty for that

user1483390742 · 09/09/2018 22:57

Made one today! First one since May! Chicken gravy...mmmmmm..

ILiveInSalemsLot · 09/09/2018 22:59

We do a roast every Sunday but an easy version.
It’s the kids favourite meal and I don’t need to think about what to cook.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 09/09/2018 22:59

Yep, nearly every week we have a roast chicken. Have done since long before we had a baby. Why not? It's piss easy to cook and comforting.

Namelesswonder · 09/09/2018 23:00

Nope, maybe a couple of times a year. I’m not going to spend hours cooking on a Sunday!

Jeanclaudejackety · 09/09/2018 23:00

Sunday roast with grandparents and aunties and uncles round was the best day ever as a kid

I think families have become less close in recent times and having big family meals is seen as a chore now rather than a pleasure

Thesearepearls · 09/09/2018 23:01

Always :)

There is a roast dinner to be had every Sunday. The joint of meat varies, sometimes lamb. sometimes chicken. sometimes beef.

We do roast potatoes, proper gravy. and my stuffing is to die for. The lamb is pricked with garlic and rosemary and served with a gratin dauphinois. The beef is tender and pink.

Everyone is welcome and everyone knows the deal. They turn up at 12.30 and get served at 1.00. It's a great tradition and even DD and her friends (DD is a clubber) drag themselves out of bed for Sunday Lunch.

It's a wonderful thing.

bonbonours · 09/09/2018 23:02

We had one at the inlaws today but not really a regular thing at our house. We tend to be pretty busy at weekends so we fit in whatever sort of food works at the time - sometimes people are in and out at different times. Also, I sometimes will randomly do a roast dinner on a different day of the week. DD1 is vegetarian and DS doesn't like potatoes so its a bit faffy for me as I have to do different options.

I don't really see why a roast is somehow more special than any other family meal eaten together, or necessary to eat every week. The best family meal we've had lately was home-made burritos where the kids could pick what they wanted to put in. Sociable, fun and delicious.

Badtasteflump · 09/09/2018 23:02

Absolutely! It's a lovely cosy part of the colder months of the year. Actually today we had our first Sunday roast since about April - it was lovely but I was almost too hot to eat it since the weather was really warm today and having the oven on for a couple of hours was a bit much. I might delay the next one for a few weeks.

In the summer anything with gravy feels wrong imo - but in Autumn/Winter it's the ultimate comfort stodge Smile

Rosieposy4 · 09/09/2018 23:02

We have one nearly every week. I don’t understand the too busy to have one posts, they are one of the easiest meals to do.
Today i was up at 7 took a dc to a 10 k race 30 mins away, i went shopping, took my horse to a competition in the afternoon, marked a heap of work, lazed around a bit and did some gardening. Still loads of time to do roast chicken and all it’s friends.

lowtide · 09/09/2018 23:02

Chicken
Potatoes
Veg
wine
How easy is that! I It’s the least chore like dinner.

Enko · 09/09/2018 23:03

Love a Sunday roast we have it once a month or so... I am baffled by the idea of a Roast = a vegetarian cant eat it though... Must tell veggie DD2 she cant have them anymore.. (she loves them as much as we do - we do a nut roast or puff pastry parcels for her and she has all the veg)

bonbonours · 09/09/2018 23:03

And I grew up with a roast every Sunday.

lowtide · 09/09/2018 23:04

Who the fuck in the world doesn’t like potatoes ShockShock

cherish123 · 09/09/2018 23:04

I love roasts and would have one every Sunday. My family aren't as keen. DH doesn't like them if he's working the next day so we only have them in the hols.

Bimgy85 · 09/09/2018 23:06

Yes they are soooo loved in this house! Love going out for a decent carvery or making one to your own taste at home even better, roast beef with all the trimmings or breaded or roast chicken with mash, veg, stuffing, pepper sauce, gravy, roasties soaked in fat

ferrier · 09/09/2018 23:06

Yep. Every Sunday except in summer. Very easy to make. Nutritious. Everyone loves it and looks forward to it after a hard morning at their respective activities. Good for bringing all together. Don't need to think about menu planning. It's a great British tradition.

greendale17 · 09/09/2018 23:07

I don’t know anyone who has a roast dinner every week. I’m don’t like it anyway

boatyardblues · 09/09/2018 23:07

Since I discovered frozen roast potatoes, midweek roast has become a thing in our house. Chicken thighs, chipolatas and frozen roasties in the oven, 35 minute countdown starts. Start peeling and chopping the veg. Carrots and small homemade Yorkshire on with 20ish mins to go, rest of veg in as & when. Gravy granule gravy with the veg water. All on the table in under 40 mins. So we don’t bother on the weekend any more. We keep Sundays free for getting out & about.
