Sunday Roasts, are they still a thing?

It was such a staple of my 70's/80's youth and not being a parent I wondered what, if anything, it has morphed into.

@SuckOnTHATRyan Sunday dinner here too lol. Never called it a roast.

SuckOnTHATRyan · 09/09/2018 22:34

“Sunday dinner” not “Sunday roast” I mean. Sorry. It’s even in the title! Tired.

thegardenfairy · 09/09/2018 22:34

Every Sunday without fail. There's nothing like a Sunday roast with everyone sitting at the table.

I can't imagine having anything else on a Sunday. Proper family time

Rainbunny · 09/09/2018 22:35

alldaysleeper - "DH does a great Sunday roast and will not allow me to lift a finger including washing up. "

Does he have an available brother? Grin

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 09/09/2018 22:35

We have a roast on most Sundays. It feels like one less meal to plan for, just pick the meat! If we're out then I'm not bothered that we won't have one though. We go to the carvery now and again as well.

nicslackey · 09/09/2018 22:36

Every Sunday without fail. I make it and do Yorkshire puds whatever the joint. Lamb with roast potatoes, baby sprouts and roasted carrots and parsnips today. Any leftover gravy is lush on a few chips!

sophisticatedsarcasm · 09/09/2018 22:36

We have a roast on a Sunday at least 2 Sunday’s a month.

TheSmallAssassin · 09/09/2018 22:37

We have one most weekends (except in the summer) though usually in the evening rather at lunchtime, unless we're having people over. We all really like them, they're easy to cook, you get a load of veg into everyone and there's leftovers to eat later in the week. And you get to have crumble too.

Sallystyle · 09/09/2018 22:38

An occasional thing here on any day.

lowtide · 09/09/2018 22:39

Totally! I have a serious problem if I don’t have one. Variation in the summer. It’s not just about the meal though. That’s the point of a roast. Mid afternoon dinner. Everyone sits around. We had them every week as w kid and I don’t think I could be with someone that didn’t think that sit down dinner was really important.

SleepFreeZone · 09/09/2018 22:39

We had a mini one this evening and the kids loved it. I probably do it once every couple of months.

TheBigFatMermaid · 09/09/2018 22:39

I find a roast one of the easiest meals to make. We have one most Sundays, unless DD has karate commitments. Next week, she has an important karate lesson in the place my mum lives, so as a bonus, we get to visit mum and have her cook us a roast!

Pimmsypimms · 09/09/2018 22:40

Had our first roast of autumn today, didn’t realise how much I missed my Sunday dinner!! Made an apple crumble too and watched a family film. The perfect lazy Sunday!

DameDoom · 09/09/2018 22:40

In autumn and winter I cook a Sunday roast on a Friday evening - I leave work a bit earlier and get all the stuff. DH and I sit in the dining room with candles and have lots of wine and a proper catch up.
A Friday night Sunday dinner starts the weekend off brilliantly - it's so relaxing.

elQuintoConyo · 09/09/2018 22:43

I have never made one. I'm 43yo and English.

We don't even have one on Christmas Day.

I don't mind them, i could eat one quite happily, but i couldn't eat the same thing every Sunday. Not my cup of cafe con leche tea.

RedDwarves · 09/09/2018 22:44

Not a thing here in Australia anymore. Australian weather and Sunday roasts don't really "go".

A lot of older people are still hanging onto it though, and will whip up a roast whenever the occasion arises.

notangelinajolie · 09/09/2018 22:44

Yes, it's a thing. More so in the Winter for us when Sunday Roast's kick in every Sunday. In Summer - Sunday Roast is sometimes replaced with BBQ if the weather is nice. My kids love it and it is DH's favourite meal.

NCNCNC123 · 09/09/2018 22:46

It’s rare for us not to have a Sunday roast, despite it only being the two of us. We also always sit at the table for it rather than have it on our laps.

The only times we don’t are whenever we’ve been away for the weekend don get back on the Sunday night, or, coincidentally like just now, when the oven isn't working (so I made stew instead).

SerenDippitty · 09/09/2018 22:47

We (DH and I) don’t bother. Sunday mornings are for relaxation. We do occasionally have a roast for Saturday night dinner.

LusaCole · 09/09/2018 22:47

We have a Sunday roast most weeks (except over the summer).

ItchyBites · 09/09/2018 22:50

I never do a roast on a Sunday. OH works on Saturday, so Sunday is the only day we can go out and do stuff. Sometimes we go out for the day, and sometimes we go out for half of the day and spend the other half going swimming, or doing bits round the house/garden. Either way, I don't have the time or inclination to cook a massive dinner for everyone. We usually have salad and meat, or something like that, but later in the day, rather than at lunch time.

lowtide · 09/09/2018 22:50

It’s not the same thing every week! The only thing that’s the same is it’s a whole price of roast meat. Could be chicken with preserved lemons and sweet potatoes. Soy marinated beef. Lamb with beans and yogurt and mint marinade.
It’s just the occasion of getting together.

lowtide · 09/09/2018 22:50

Piece! Not price

SocksRock · 09/09/2018 22:51

We had one today for the first time in ages because we had my SIL/BIL and their children over.

I proceeded to smash the bowl that had all the leftovers in as I was putting it in the and was totally gutted. I did make soup out of the carcass though so I’m looking forward to that for lunch at work tomorrow!

Roussette · 09/09/2018 22:52

I don't feel I've started my week off right if I haven't cooked one. Don't do it when it's really hot but always have one apart from that and we love it!

What's not to like...

I want Sunday to be different and eating on a lunchtime with a roast makes it so
