Inconsiderate parking

Is there anyone on here who could explain to me why you would consider parking up in front of someone’s home nearish to an airport, for any old length of time, rather than paying for long stay or taking public transport?

Will anyone admit to doing this IRL? Please enlighten me. Honestly I’m all ears as I’d never, ever consider doing this to you and I’m trying to understand the thought process.

I don’t think I AIBU but I would love to hear the flip side of why people would think it’s ok to do this...

—i may have a flyparker outside our home (again)—

Are they blocking your drive or parking in a space owned by you?

If not, then they are fine and YABU. It's public road and people can park wherever they want.

Oysterbabe · 09/09/2018 19:37

I assume you're looking for more than 'because it's cheaper?'
Not something I've done but I can see why someone might.

PotteringAlong · 09/09/2018 19:37

Because it’s free. And because if your car is taxed and insured, it’s perfectly legal.

OnBail · 09/09/2018 19:38

Because people are selfish, they are parking for free and don’t care about the inconvenience to anyone else. I would never do this.

ghostyslovesheets · 09/09/2018 19:38

erm because people are allowed to park on public roads

NerrSnerr · 09/09/2018 19:38

Because it is free. If the road has no restrictions and it's not blocking access there's nothing you can do.

Sirzy · 09/09/2018 19:38

I wouldn’t do it but given the price of airport parking it isn’t hard to realise why people would. And as long as they are parked legally they are doing nothing wrong

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 09/09/2018 19:39

You don't own the road outside your house presumably so they are free to park there. We live close to a town centre so get commuters parking on our road on weekdays, not much you can do about it except campaign for resident only parking which the council will charge you for.

NerrSnerr · 09/09/2018 19:39

Actually there is something you can do. Ask the council for a residents only parking.

ivykaty44 · 09/09/2018 19:39

Most people who own cars store their cars on public roads at some point.

You can’t prevent people storing their cars outside your house/ why does it matter if it’s one car for a week or 7 different cars?

fluffytowel · 09/09/2018 19:39

It's annoying and has happened to us with off street parking. Unfortunately though there's no legal matters with it as long as the vehicle is taxed and insured.

Would I do it personally, no. Do I think you're being unreasonable to be mad about it, no as I know how annoying it can be but such is life I'm afraid.

I recommend a large red wine to ease the annoyance...usually helps for me.

Noqont · 09/09/2018 19:39

Because it's legal and free.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/09/2018 19:40

Is parking a moral issue...if it’s not blocking and it’s free to park there then it’s fine.

welshweasel · 09/09/2018 19:41

When I was a student I parked my car near archway station for 2 months whilst I went to India. Couldn't afford parking at Heathrow for that long and public transport couldn't get us where we needed to be for the right time.

Hidillyho · 09/09/2018 19:41

I have never done it because we get lifts (people we know, taxi, train) to airport but I can see why people do it. If it’s not on a persons property then they are free to do so. It’s annoying but not much you can do

NerrSnerr · 09/09/2018 19:42

I really don't get the angst people have about people parking in front of their houses. You must know when you move in that people park on roads and if there's space outside your house it's probably that people will park there.

flowery · 09/09/2018 19:43

Isn’t it obvious why?!

If you don’t want anyone except residents parking in your street, lobby the council for residents-only parking. People who live near hospitals, town centres and other places where parking is expensive/limited have the same issue.

As long as people aren’t blocking you in or something, and are parked legally, they are doing absolutely nothing wrong. If parking is limited and you want to restrict it, ask the council.

LeroyJenkins · 09/09/2018 19:44

If they are legally parked, then yeah why not

If you want to park outside your house get one with a driveway

CuppaSarah · 09/09/2018 19:44

Happens on my road all the time. Most of the houses don't have parking and there aren't enough spaces for residents as it is. It's annoying but I knew the situation before I moved here. Though this summer holidays it's been a real challenge being heavily pregnant, on crutches with two young children. We managed though! I understand why people do it, it's legal and only a minor inconvenience usually.

DeborahDowner · 09/09/2018 19:45

I get that it’s free, and some people feel entitled. Our road has extremely limited space even for residents to start with so it’s mind boggling they choose it.

It’s actually dangerous. A fire engine would not make it through because of their “legal” parking. We are frequently unable to have our bins emptied as fly parkers block the route for the bin lorries with their ‘legal’ parking. Our bins didn’t get emptied for a month because of someone’s hollibobs.

OP posts:
NerrSnerr · 09/09/2018 19:47

If the car has been there ages wouldn't it be the cars parking on the other side of the road that come after the airport car that's blocking the fire engines?

ivykaty44 · 09/09/2018 19:48

If cars are blocking services you need to campaign for yellow lines to prevent cars being parked

Oysterbabe · 09/09/2018 19:48

Surely the road would be blocked whether it's residents or airport parkers?
Every house has advantages and disadvantages. You do your research before buying and decide whether the disadvantages are things you can live with.

Darkstar4855 · 09/09/2018 19:49

Never done it for an airport but have left my car for a couple of days near a train station when I was younger and couldn’t afford the long stay parking.

On the flip side I lived 5-10 mins walk from a major city centre train station for more than ten years and always had people parking on my street to use the station. I always just accepted it as part of the pay off for living in such a convenient place.

TheFairyCaravan · 09/09/2018 19:50

I feel sorry for residents in streets where people do this. You don’t know when you park how much inconvenience you’re causing to someone. It can take months for a disabled bay to be put in so some poor disabled person might be stuck in the house while you’re enjoying your holiday.

Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should.
