Inconsiderate parking

Is there anyone on here who could explain to me why you would consider parking up in front of someone’s home nearish to an airport, for any old length of time, rather than paying for long stay or taking public transport?

Will anyone admit to doing this IRL? Please enlighten me. Honestly I’m all ears as I’d never, ever consider doing this to you and I’m trying to understand the thought process.

I don’t think I AIBU but I would love to hear the flip side of why people would think it’s ok to do this...

Would you take the last available space in a car park? After all, there could be people who needed that space more than you and you've massively inconvenienced them by using it. You are, however, parked perfectly legally and within your right.

Defrack · 10/09/2018 09:49

Do you own the road?
Is their parking restrictions in place?

If not, get off your high horse, people are perfectly entitled to park there and frankly it's quite funny the whole street is outraged that people are parked legally.

It's like being outraged someone parked in a car park Grin

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 10/09/2018 09:52

Easy to say get off your high horse. I'd bet my house that you wouldn't be as understanding if it were YOU that this was affecting.

girlandboy · 10/09/2018 09:56

YANBU!

I live near to a popular country park, and get hikers parking outside my house and disappearing for the day, or longer.
Now, I don't have a driveway so I try to park outside my house as do the other residents outside their houses.
When it comes to coming home with 10 bags of shopping and nowhere to park within half a mile it becomes a problem. And all because the walkers/hikers won't pay £4 for all day parking.

And as for the suggestion by some pp's that I move and buy a house with a driveway, come on! As if! I love my house, I just don't care much for entitled walkers who won't pay £4 for their day out.

LyndorCake · 10/09/2018 09:59

But they have just as much right to park outside your house as you do. Unless you own the road.

LyndorCake · 10/09/2018 10:00

It's convenient for you to park outside your house, but it's also convenient for them.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 10/09/2018 10:02

Oh but they're not doing anything wrong girlandboy! So what if you have to park far away from your house and have to carry all your shopping. You're not allowed to be annoyed and these twats Angry

LyndorCake · 10/09/2018 10:05

You're allowed to be annoyed at the inconvenience however you were well aware of this possibility when you buy a house without off street parking, so really you can only be annoyed with yourself.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 10/09/2018 10:10

Erm I bought a house with a drive. It doesn't stop people parking in a way that means I am frequently blocked in because of selfish people parking so close to my drive especially if another car is parked across from them.

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 10/09/2018 10:11

I wouldn't because I prefer the car to be more secure but otherwise on a public road it wouldn't occur to me that I had some moral duty to the people who lived on the road.

LyndorCake · 10/09/2018 10:16

greatduck if they are blocking you in then you can report them. If it's a persistent problem, why not apply for permit only parking?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 10/09/2018 10:20

I have rang the council and explained that I am blocked in frequently but they said that because the people parking are not doing anything illegal ie not parking on double yellows or parking over my drive that there's nothing I can do. They did say that maybe I should keep my wheelie bins there to stop them parking which is one solution but then I'd need to keep moving them to get in and out of my drive, which would be a bit of a nuisance.

Fairenuff · 10/09/2018 10:48

Use your common sense and dont Park somewhere idiotic!

Oh I will Pookie, don't worry. I will park where it's legal and I'm not blocking anyone in or out of the their driveway Smile

HaveSomeGrace · 10/09/2018 11:32

Our bins didn’t get emptied for a month because of someone’s hollibobs

Someone’s WHAT?????

BouleBaker · 10/09/2018 12:01

We had a similar problem with people parking on our road to go on cruises or on long, long boat trips. We also had the local limo company use our road as their parking area and a second hand car dealer do the same. In the end we got a resident permit zone, we had to badger the council for years because the road is too narrow for bays to be marked so we needed a special permit scheme. The council took their revenge by charging us twice as much for our permits as anyone else in the city but at least now we can get in and out of the road safely as well as park. The fact was that, as it wasn't their road, people didn't think to park considerately so did cause lots of problems. OP, get a resident parking scheme sorted, until then you don't have a leg to stand on.

BIWI · 10/09/2018 12:47

@GreatDuckCookery Of course someone parking across your drive would be irritating and inconvenient. But that's not what the OP was talking about, was it? She was complaining about people who parked legally, on the public highway.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 10/09/2018 12:52

They aren't parking across my drive Biwi, they park right up to it and if someone else has parked across from them it means I cannot get off my drive because my road is very narrow.

Sandstormbrewing · 10/09/2018 12:52

GreatDuckCookery how can people be blocking you in if they aren't parking across it? Do you have a dropped curb?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 10/09/2018 12:57

They are blocking me in because I need the full width of the road to get off my drive, if someone is parked either side of it or someone has parked across from a car next to my drive it means I have no space to swing out. It's not so bad when I'm coming home although a bit inconvenient if I've got a load of shopping but if I'm already on my drive and need to go out it is a pita understandably.

Gromance02 · 10/09/2018 13:15

YANBU OP. I wouldn't have the cheek to do it myself. Parking in long stay at airports isn't expensive. Fucking peasants resorting to leaving their cars outside other people's homes. They might have marginally flash cars but that is no indication of how much money they've got. Probably on finance if they're that strapped for cash they leave their car on a residential street.

Satsumaeater · 10/09/2018 13:17

Do you need the full width of the road because you have a very large car? I have to say I can't really work out how you can't get out. Is it because you drive in and it's hard to reverse out? If so, I'd suggest that you always reverse in.

Satsumaeater · 10/09/2018 13:18

Most flash cars are on finance I think. Especially the electric ones as it makes more sense to lease because of the cost of the batteries. I wouldn't park in a residential street while I went away because I'd be too worried about my car being keyed or something.

XiCi · 10/09/2018 13:27

This is what happened recently when someone was in the same position as the OP

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/man-cling-filmed-car-because-13661998.amp

I know that this is legal but I don't think there's many people who wouldn't find it incredibly annoying. Residents only parking seems to be the way to go.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 10/09/2018 13:31

Yes I have a landrover discovery.

ThreeAnkleBiters · 10/09/2018 13:32

Of course YANBU OP. Just because something is legal doesn't mean it's not a dickish thing to do. The only way to go is to get permit making. If people don't behave considerately through choice you have to force them. People's right to park near their homes and get their children inside, shopping in, have guests visit etc. trumps people's right to be cheapskates and not just pay for parking.
