Inconsiderate parking

Is there anyone on here who could explain to me why you would consider parking up in front of someone’s home nearish to an airport, for any old length of time, rather than paying for long stay or taking public transport?

Will anyone admit to doing this IRL? Please enlighten me. Honestly I’m all ears as I’d never, ever consider doing this to you and I’m trying to understand the thought process.

I don’t think I AIBU but I would love to hear the flip side of why people would think it’s ok to do this...

Because they're selfish and want parking for free? It used to happen in my road (but for people driving 1 mile to get the train then leaving it there all day). We got residence only parking. Now the commuters have to walk - they're healthier and we're happier!

Aaaahfuck · 09/09/2018 22:49

It's cheaper and it's a public road?

19lottie82 · 09/09/2018 22:50

OP. Quite simply, the fact is this. You feel
inconvenienced by holiday makers parking in your street.
Holiday makers feel that they would be inconvenienced (financially) by having to pay for airport parking when there is local parking nearby, which they are entitled to use as they have paid their road tax and it’s perfectly legal.

Does your inconvenience trump theirs? You probably think so.
Does their (potential) inconvenience trump theirs? They probably think so.

ThreeAnkleBiters · 09/09/2018 22:51

Oh come on people! Just because you're legally entitled to do something doesn't mean it's not obnoxious. I could sit on the bus pointing out the physical flaws of all my fellow passengers if I liked - I've paid my ticket why not? It's obviously more important for people to be able to park to get to their houses than it is for people who can afford to fly to get free parking. If everyone did this people would have to walk to miles with their kids/shopping/elderly relatives to get their homes. Don't be so cheap and pay for long stay parking!

19lottie82 · 09/09/2018 22:52

*trump yours (not theirs!)

DeborahDowner · 09/09/2018 22:56

@19lottie82 us we have made those inquiries. And will continue to follow through. I can imagine we will have it granted but it’s all admin.

It’s just not suitable in our road and we should hopefully be able to sort something out with the council, though doubtless it won’t be a quick process.

I cannot fathom why people choose to park here when there are multiple other places in our village they could park without obstructing. It’s really obvious that parking is tight and it’s shocking people choose HERE!. I’m so annoyed with the ‘savvy tips’ thread that people have cottoned on to. It was never this way even a year ago.

As lovely pp’s who can sympathise have noted, narrow roads and bin lorries (and God forbid emergency services) do not mix with fly parkers.

I don’t feel like I should have to move for the sake of a ‘savvy moneysaver’ Website! That’s all that has changed.

@threeanklebiters you put it perfectly. Thank you.

I actually think you will find the reason alot of the cars are 'posh' is because how poorly they are looked after in the airport car parks. The stories of damage to cars, being taken for drives by airport staff etc. Although it would be annoying on a small road I get it. I can see why they may choose to do it if they have worked hard for their cars. So all the bangers are safe at the airport hence why you never see them!

Tbh I agree with the other posters you seem way too worked up about it. It's a public highway & clearly they aren't breaching any laws otherwise you would have grounds to get them removed. If your cul de sac is too small for a bin lorry, then it is small enough for you all to arrange you bins by the entrance on the collection morning? By the sounds of it there are enough 'curtain twitching' neighbours at home to manage the put out/collection after!

And why ask in 'AIBU' if you're unwilling to accept the general consensus? Hmm

PrimalLass · 09/09/2018 23:00

rather than paying

This. This is why.

PookieDo · 09/09/2018 23:00

It is obnoxious. I don’t understand how it would be hard to get a train. I actually think that most people who dump their cars actually DO get the train in a few stops, because where I live they are hogging up all the streets closest to the station (which goes straight to the airport)

Airport taxis cost a small fortune. I understand exercising your road tax and parking somewhere fairly inconspicuous like a large housing estate but if OP is talking about similar to what I am thinking then people are parking in small culdesacs/windy/small village type areas where it is already horribly congested. There are more practical places to leave your car so perhaps just check them out before you dump the car? Perhaps there is a wider less tight street where you don’t risk your car being damaged by angry neighbours or emergency vehicles and no one will even notice you!

AlessandroVasectomi · 09/09/2018 23:01

I wouldn’t leave my car in a random street while on holiday simply because I’m very fussy about it! However, saying that, I did leave a nearly new Audi at Gatwick long stay in 2011 and when we returned the driver’s door was dented! These days we take a taxi as it’s cheaper than long stay parking and considerably less hassle. Even if I had a car I didn’t care about, I wouldn’t leave it outside somebody’s house for the duration of a holiday. It doesn’t happen where we live, a quiet cul de sac that isn’t handy for anything really. The only people who park outside our house are visitors to our neighbours.

19lottie82 · 09/09/2018 23:02

If everyone did this people would have to
walk to miles with their kids/shopping/elderly relatives to get their homes

No, if everyone did that then they would get residents parking.

This scenario just doesn’t apply to airports. It can apply to train stations, areas close to city centres. People park there during the day (ok it’s not for 2 weeks but the parking problems are still the same for residents) because they don’t want to pay high public transport costs. It’s the same argument.

I appreciate it’s not ideal for residents, but that’s the reason why metered / resident parking is becoming more and more common.

I don’t think you can begrudge people who think they ANBU by taking up one space to save >£10 a day.

Residents want commuters / travellers who pay road tax, not to park (legally) in their street, but they don’t want the hassles associated with parking permits. You can’t have the best of both worlds, unfortunately.

Notonyournellly · 09/09/2018 23:02

I think it's selfish and wouldn't do it. It's not just for a few hours is it? It means residents can have weeks of not being able to park anywhere near their houses, removals companies and delivery vans can't get near to load/unload furniture, restricted access for fire engines and ambulances etc. Street cleaning and road repairs can't get done either. It's a huge inconvenience. I bet all the posters saying they do it would be up in arms if a load of freeloaders abandoned their cars right outside their house for weeks on end.

PookieDo · 09/09/2018 23:03

OP I do think we mean the same place 😂
It was not built in medieval times for cars really 😂
Whereas half a mile up the road there is a huge housing estate with lovely big roads no one would even notice!

londonrach · 09/09/2018 23:03

Its free and legal op. Yabu and abit ott. Cctv. Be careful theres rules about that. People are legally parking their taxed car on the road. You come across as very rude. What on earth is fly parking.

PookieDo · 09/09/2018 23:06

I don’t think anyone who hasn’t lived with this or near this would understand what it’s like during summer months

It must be annoying to live near a train station but most of these areas now have permits. Some of the roads here are private roads but seems like residents still struggle to get cars moved

19lottie82 · 09/09/2018 23:06

OP, just to confirm, if I were in your shoes, I would be annoyed, and I wouldn’t leave my car on a residential street while I went on holiday. I’m just looking at both sides and trying to put forward a logical argument.

DeborahDowner · 09/09/2018 23:08

@PookieDo I do get the sense we are in the same locale! MF ?

OP posts:
19lottie82 · 09/09/2018 23:08

What on earth is fly parking

I guess exactly what the OP has explained. Where people park so they can fly from the airport.

PookieDo · 09/09/2018 23:08

They have put some residents permits in on the worst place here OP (if it is same place) because of severe congestion and I think they will eventually have to extend it

PookieDo · 09/09/2018 23:10

@DeborahDowner

I know exactly 😂
At least they did put permits on the hill. It’s a start! Maybe you will get them one day

PookieDo · 09/09/2018 23:12

I suppose myself and OP wonder what goes through people’s minds when they see ye olde worlde sized roads/houses etc and think ‘fabulous! I shall leave my huge Audi here for 2 weeks!’

yesornoworld · 09/09/2018 23:19

Oh this is only annoying for people who have to live through it. Everyone else is right in their view too who don't have to deal with it. Living 6 miles away from an airport and our road having no parking restrictions. Several times a year I would have a particular ND neighbours relatives/friends etc park outside my house for upto 2 weeks at a time for their yearly hols. While neighbours had a driveway but no space as their 2 cars took it up. Yep couldn't do anything about it as it was taxed/insured and was legal. Meaning I had to find parking down the road wherever I could with little ones during winter/rainy seasons. Not ideal but there will always be a CF taking advantage. It's just lack of common courtesy. Not nice at all but what can you do?

DeborahDowner · 09/09/2018 23:19

@pookiedo kindred village and parking spirit! 🙌🏼exactly. What on Earth possesses that though I really do not know. We are a magnet and not even near the hill. Still just as bad though and you know the council isn’t super helpful.

OP posts:
Lemontart25 · 09/09/2018 23:20

I suppose another point is they may assume with all your cctv that their precious posh cars will be alot safer on a small quiet cul de sac with so many neighbours watching out.
