To not appreciate Serena using sexism in her arguments against umpire

Sorry if there is a thread, I did scan four pages to check.

Serena gets coached (which her coach admits) but claims she didn't see it. Then smashes a racquet in separate fit of temper. Then tells the umpire she can't be a cheat because she's a mother(!), he will never referee a match again with her, and he's a thief.

The punishments all seem fine to me and I really felt for Osaka having to apologise in her winners speech. Serena should be saying sorry today IMO.

OP posts:

"Plays the black card", "diva bitch". Yeah that's not racist at all...Hmm

wowfudge · 10/09/2018 22:09

Completely agree with you OP.

Seems to me, if she genuinely wasn't looking at her coach's signals, that he's the one she should be angry with. It's automatically a code violation if spotted and acted on by an umpire, doesn't matter whether the player is looking to their coach for help or not. Then she smashed her racquet. Then she called the umpire a liar and thief. She should be ashamed of herself for escalating things. She was no victim in this. She reminded me of McEnroe - he always kicked off when things weren't going his way. If she'd been a footballer she'd have been given a yellow card for the first violation then sent off for dissent for arguing with the ref.

The umpire has a reputation for being strict but fair from what I understand - it's probably how he got to umpire the final.

For Serena to say it was due to sexism does neither her nor tennis any favours. Maybe other umpires need to toughen up and deal more harshly with this kind of behaviour. And let's not forget how this must have rattled her opponent who managed to stay calm and win.

Hopefully Serena Williams will reflect on her own behaviour and think how that impacts her child and her family.

crispysausagerolls · 10/09/2018 22:25

Her behaviour was outrageous, as it was at the US open in 2009 and 2011. She is a classic sore loser; when things start to go wrong she kicks off massively and can’t accept responsibility.

Serena Williams depicted in a crude racist and sexist manner. Osaka depicted as a white woman with blonde hair.

QueenOfTheAndals · 11/09/2018 08:00

I was just about to post that @placemats. It's disgusting and no matter what Serena did, she doesn't deserve that. It's that sort of shit that she's been putting up with for 20 years.

prettypossums · 11/09/2018 09:10

Erm, it's a cartoon. Seen any Theresa May cartoons lately? I'd suggest having a quick Google - you'll see far worse - and without any accompanying uproar

InigoMontoyaWillcox · 11/09/2018 09:25

It's not "just a cartoon" FFS! It plays on the most disgusting racial stereotypes, and it's not just Serena, Naomi hs been whitewashed into a thin, white blonde!

This is the sort of thing Serena is up against all the time, and it must be so tiring.

SuckOnTHATRyan · 11/09/2018 09:35

That cartoon is really fucking racist and sexist. I hope the man who drew it gets fired, but he won’t .

Mumto2two · 11/09/2018 09:45

PC gone mad. Spitting image never did any of its caricatures much aesthetic justice, yet they were not screaming racist accusations in response. Utterly ridiculous.

SuckOnTHATRyan · 11/09/2018 09:47

PC gone mad

Hahahahahahaha I can’t believe you actually said this^^. Jesus. With no sense of irony? Or are you making a funny joke? I genuinely can’t tell. It’s such a classic racist apologist line, I just can’t believe anyone would say it irl.

FirstOfHerName · 11/09/2018 09:49

"PC gone mad"
"The racism card"
"Diva bitch"

This thread is disgusting.

NotACleverName · 11/09/2018 09:57

"PC gone mad" is a sure sign of someone whose opinions are terrible.

The cartoon is racist as fuck and you're either a) blind and/or b) willfully ignorant if you can't see that.

MQv2 · 11/09/2018 09:59

The cartoon is disgusting

Mumto2two · 11/09/2018 10:16

No I cannot see that. You are right. The cartoon depicts an angry woman. Just as I cannot see that the many characters which have been cartooned to depict the likes of Theresa May, Donald Trump, John Major etc etc are anything other than satire. They too have had certain features accentuated and exaggerated...but hey that’s ok.
Self pertuating nonsense...

Mumto2two · 11/09/2018 10:16

Perpetuating..

Mumto2two · 11/09/2018 10:20

And judging by the language, and tone of expression...Seems ironic to be making reference to ‘terrible opinions’.
It is terrible that we even have an opinion full stop.

SuckOnTHATRyan · 11/09/2018 10:21

Haaaaaaaahahahahahaha! The language? Because someone said “fuck”? Oh my fucking GOD! You’re priceless. Priceless. Like a caricature. Woo! Thanks for the laugh.

DolorestheNewt · 11/09/2018 10:21

I'm actually quite distressed to see the number of people who can't see that racist caricatures and caricatures of [white, privileged, mostly male] politicians (and I'm old enough to have watched Spitting Image) are not the same thing. Or, rather, that they are, on one level, the same thing, but the levels of relative damage that they do simply cannot be compared.

Political cartooning goes back to - someone help me here, it's got to be at least the eighteenth century? Cruikshank? And it's always been a legitimate way to remind those in power that they aren't above criticism. It is completely and utterly different to perpetuating angry black woman racist tropes.

QueenOfTheAndals · 11/09/2018 10:24

Portraying Serena as a Jim Crow-era (look it up) caricature and Naomi as a blonde white woman couldn't be more racist if it was wearing a white hood and burning a cross.

SuckOnTHATRyan · 11/09/2018 10:24

Portraying Serena as a Jim Crow-era (look it up) caricature and Naomi as a blonde white woman couldn't be more racist if it was wearing a white hood and burning a cross.

Quite. Succinctly put.

crispysausagerolls · 11/09/2018 11:02

The depiction of Serena being a tantrumming baby is not racist in the least, it’s accurate and what caricaturing is about.

The fact that her opponent is now suddenly white and blonde is fucking weird though and changes the entire tone of the cartoon.

Mumto2two · 11/09/2018 11:06

Suckonthatryan. Quite. Succinctly put.
Glad I made you laugh.
This is the first post I’ve posted on in a while in AIBU. I’ve delivetrately steered clear because the amount of antagonism and trumped up isms being strung out from every word is really just sad. Racism, sexism, ageism..mother in law ism...the list is endless. Just as one person has an opinion that they do not perceive something in a particular way, others are entitled to their opinion on the same. Swearing at people in ardent defence of your opinion, is frankly quite crass. Swear away my friend...I am so glad the people I am surrounded by in real life.. friends of many colours, nationalities and creeds....are people who make me feel at peace with the world.
Have a nice day Smile

Nutkins24 · 11/09/2018 11:13

What the actual fuck is that cartoon?! I really can’t believe what I’m seeing....well actually I can. But it’s so glaringly racist and sexist that I can’t believe they would be so blatant.

SuckOnTHATRyan · 11/09/2018 11:22

Glad I made you laugh

Smile. You really did. Well, same to you, enjoy your naice friends who would never utter a swear Shock! But maybe come out with delights like “it’s PC gone mad harrumph harrumph” when someone points out that something racist is racist? You’re very welcome to your friends, (of all colours, creeds and nationalities. And here’s your medal for having friends who aren’t white 🥇. Bravo. I mean really. Well done Hmm).

twattymctwatterson · 11/09/2018 11:29

Serena behaved badly. That I can agree with. She behaved badly as many men in the sport have before her without the same level of criticism or sanction. Women are held to higher standards of behaviour than men
