To still be annoyed that Hermione married Ron?

I know, the last book came out years ago, but I’m re-reading them now with DS and it’s got me annoyed all over again. He’s a mediocre, sulky man-child, while she’s a brilliantly talented witch. Why would she ever marry him?!

Those saying that the trauma would bond them together...I feel trauma like that would initially bring them together but the resulting ptsd would drive them all apart. They would probably end up moving away and at least one or two would develop a drink problem or some other addiction problem. Their future lives would be chaotic, abusive and probably very sad. They'd block their friends from memory because of the horrific flashbacks. If ron and hermione did get together it'd be to both their detriment, a toxic and turbulent relationship where neither can heal properly. Years down the line, Hermione would possibly come out best being level headed, she'd probably sort out some counselling for herself. Somebody would kill themselves, maybe ron or harry, in their 40s/50s.

I think realistically this is the most likely scenario even if it is bleak. Let us not forget that both Harry and Hermione were physically tortured by voldemort and/or his death eaters.

I think Harry in particular would be incredibly damaged by the events of his childhood.

I prefer to avoid the realities of trauma survival and live in a world where a week at the burrow fixes all psychological ills...

Clutterbugsmum · 09/09/2018 09:53

HarryPotterfan1604 Yes I love how Neville grows too. But I wish it could have turned out that the prophecy was about him all along and he was the one who killed Voldemort.

But that's what it was, Harry could only have killed Voldemort because Neville killed the snake. They were both the 'chosen one'.

mostdays · 09/09/2018 10:17

Because she loved him and he gave her something she didn't find elsewhere. She was never a girl to be more impressed by status than substance.

This is a really good fanfic that focuses on how Ron/Hermione would turn out in middle age. I throughly recommend it to everyone who also doubts their marriage could last.

Actually, belay that, because the presentation of the same work is much better on AO3.

I thought all the 'pairing off' was unconvincing.
Ron & Hermione, Harry and Ginny. All of it.

trockodile · 09/09/2018 12:02

I agree that Hermione would have got fed up nannying Ron. I think that a Weasley twin (alive!) would have worked well-bright enough to keep up with her, able to bring out and complement her rebellious, unorthodox and fun side of her personality. Either that or I could see her with an alive Sirius! In my head she goes into research and discovers how to reach through the veil and rescues him. Age wise he has spent so much of his adulthood in limbo, that I don’t think there would be a significant gap.
Harry ends up with Draco! Obviously! Grin

3luckystars · 09/09/2018 12:05

People make mistakes in real life too? Maybe you could accept it that way, it wasn't a Disney style happy ever after.

Anyway, I will go a step further and say that they cast the wrong one for Ron in the films.

PinguDance · 09/09/2018 12:19

I’m also listening to them all again (the best thing Stephen Fry has ever done is read these books) and think a) Ron is actually unfairly underwritten from book 4 onwards - he’s great in the first three, really the kind and thoughtful foil to Harry and Hermione which gets lost as he becomes more jealous b) lots of stuff between Ron and Hermione happens ‘off screen’ as in the story is told from Harry’s perspective and we don’t see Ron and Hermione’s independent relationship although we are made aware there is one. I think their relationship could work and think Ron is definitely a better choice than Harry who is a very flawed character (understandably- but he’s dead annoying by the end). What I actually find quite remarkable listening to the books again as an adult is how grown up they are - the contrast between harry’s youthful righteousness and the adults’ realism is quite sophisticated for a YA book.

Looks-wise I actually found him and Mrs Weasley the best fit out of all of them. And Richard Harris for the first two Dumbledores.

Everyone else of the main characters didn't fit their description in the books. (I also always imagined Bellatrix as black).

PinguDance · 09/09/2018 12:29

I think really Hermione just loves Ron without it necessarily making sense. Ron also embodies the wizarding world which I think might matter to muggle born Hermione, his role in the books is essentially to provide background and details about wizardry to Harry and Hermione and I can imagine Hermione, despite being such an incredible witch, would be drawn to him and his family as a way of ‘belonging’ as she is so invested in the wizarding world but didn’t grow up in it. I really wonder how muggle borns cope with the transition and extreme code switching that would come with flicking between muffle/wizarding worlds tbh. (Too invested).

Icantreachthepretzels · 09/09/2018 12:48

Snape was always going to be a triple agent. He knew Voldermort would return as did Dumbledore, and so he had to play his part well to remain a Death Eater,

Yeah - that still doesn't excuse taking the piss out of a child's teeth when a simple ' go to the hospital wing' wold suffice. That was part of him being a cruel and vindictive bully - not a cover for the bravest hero of them all.

He can be both a hero and a thoroughly unpleasant person. He was a thoroughly unpleasant person. If people want to pretend it was all an act - then he wasn't a complex person at all... he was a good man playing a bad one.
Snape is only interesting because he is both a truly despicable human being is so many respects AND the bravest one of them, the cleverest of them and Dumbledore's most loyal ally.
He can be respected for the second - but you can't palm him off on poor Hermione because of the first.

FourAlarmFire · 09/09/2018 13:08

Loved reading this thread! FWIW I think H&R are a good match - a nice foil for each other. I can see them having heated arguments but at the end of the day being very much in love. As PP have said there are lots of incidents when the two of them are together without Harry, I imagine their romance gradually blossoming from lots of shared moments the reader doesn’t see.

Harry and Ginny I’m not so sure about - but they’re less interesting characters so I’m not sure I care!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/09/2018 13:17

It still annoys me about the names Harry gives his son

What? What did he call his son?

TheGirlWhoLived · 09/09/2018 13:30

Albus Severus for the one wasn't it? And then James Sirius, and Lily something! Talk about pleasing all the family!

TheGirlWhoLived · 09/09/2018 13:32

Maybe Lily Luna was it? Something to do with a tribute to Remus Lupin with the 'Lunar'/ Moony connection

Quartz2208 · 09/09/2018 13:34

Lily Luna

I think part of it is the wizarding world is tiny (hog warts is for all of the UK and they have 40 pupils a year) so the pool of people to marry is small and marrying a muggle can be complicated so they tend to marry people they know

neffall · 09/09/2018 13:36

@Quartz2208 Surely they're all related to each other then? 😲🤔

Writersblock2 · 09/09/2018 13:36

They’re a great match. I think they compliment each other wonderfully.

Quartz2208 · 09/09/2018 13:49

The pure bloods certainly are they are all cousins with each other

FelicisWolf · 09/09/2018 13:56

I'm so happy this thread exists! (My username is my old Pottermore one... back when it was good Wink) Bookmarking my place so I can read it properly later.

But I just wanted to say that I never thought Hermione and Ron would work out, he would drive her up the wall, I'm sure of it! I also dislike how Ginny in the space of one book became super funny, popular and pretty all of a sudden just so it made sense that she would be deemed 'good enough' for the lead character. I don't know who would have been better, but I just feel all the romances were handled pretty badly. Maybe that's why there are so many fanfics out there! 😂

Wormzy · 09/09/2018 13:56

The pure bloods certainly are they are all cousins with each other Yes and I've wondered about this, too. Marrying cousins leaves you at greater risk of having children with birth defects - shouldn't there be far more disabled and adversely affected wizards and witches about? way overthinking this now

TheGirlWhoLived · 09/09/2018 13:58

Maybe all the inter-marriage is what caused the wizarding gene in the first place!

UsedtobeFeckless · 09/09/2018 14:27

Yes yes yes to Neville and Luna - both utterly fab! Harry and Ginny - your best mate's sister - bit incestuous? What happens if you split up? Hermiony and Ron - saw it coming a mile off in the books ( hate the films ) but agree she may well get fed up with him expecting his socks washed and supper cooked and saying " Waa?" everytime she tries to talk to him about anything complicated.
But Neville and Luna - totally should have happened ...
