To still be annoyed that Hermione married Ron?

I know, the last book came out years ago, but I’m re-reading them now with DS and it’s got me annoyed all over again. He’s a mediocre, sulky man-child, while she’s a brilliantly talented witch. Why would she ever marry him?!

@amusedbush it can be difficult to avoid it the wikia tends to be better as it tags up when it goes into that terrority

PinguDance · 10/09/2018 17:30

It occurred to me recently that the really got the ages wrong in the films - snape would only have been 32-39 in the books as would Sirius. I’m still gutted they didn’t get Johnny Depp to play Sirius at the time - how are teenage girls supposed to fancy Gary Oldman ffs

TitsalinaBumSquash · 10/09/2018 17:34

Rose was obnoxious AF in Cursed Child, Albus was alright but Scorpius was everything and rocketed right up to my top 5 HP characters he was also clearly getting it on with Albus

TKRedLemonade · 10/09/2018 17:41

I totally get the Ron Hermione thing but more in the books as I think Rupert took every lovely thing about Ron and made him into a moaning gawping trout. I am prob biased as like others I am the academic, highly busy demanding job person and very happily married to my intelligent nerdy but happy to do 9-5 job Husband who is always always ready with a hug and some comforting words when I get in a tizzy.

Harry and Ginny in the books I could sort of see as a teenage romance but I don’t feel film Ginny really ever unpetrified as the acting was dire to say the least. Anyone with any good long post hogwarts fanfic Rec......fire away Smile

Quartz2208 · 10/09/2018 17:45

@pingudance its funny you say that as my 9 year old loves Gary Oldman as Sirius Black - I think she overlooks his age though and he looks younger in her head

Wishiwasa · 10/09/2018 18:02

My husband was trying to remember Neville's surname and thought it was Neville Frontbottom. He is always called that in our house ☺

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 10/09/2018 18:04

I refuse to believe that CC is canon, it’s trash. I don’t even think JKR considers it canon, I think some fanfic writers could have done a better job than the person who wrote CC. The characters are so out of of character.

QuimReaper · 10/09/2018 18:21

"Neville Frontbottom" Grin

DH misremembered Bludgers as being called Splodgers...

OJZJ · 10/09/2018 18:23

Wow I just found a portal to 1997 Grin

foxtiger · 10/09/2018 18:33

i Rowling pointed out that she never actually referenced Hermione's race in any of the books

She did say she had brown hair though - how many black people have naturally brown hair (she would have been too young and unworldly to be dying it in the first couple of boos at least)?

herecomesthsun · 10/09/2018 19:10

I watched the Goblet of Fire film last night with DS10. By the end, Hermione is bored rigid by Krum, he doesn't talk and just sits there watching her study. He presses his address into her hand and wants her to correspond but she isn't interested.

Wavyheaded · 10/09/2018 19:18

Hello, newbie here :) And the first MN thread I go on is Harry Potter Grin

I think JKR has done Hermione a bit of a disservice by making her marry at all. (Why did they all have to pair up straight after school anyways?)

Hermione should have had her own spin-off series of adventure books as a witch detective, solving magical crimes, I'd so read that! I think Hermione still had a bit of mileage in her as a character, and JKR could have done so much more with her. After all, how many clue-solving, wand-waving, magical nerdy heroines that can fight are there? Just me 2 cents :)

MrsPeel · 10/09/2018 19:22

pingudance I hear that being imprisoned in Azkhaban can be terribly ageing - as is the stress of working as a double agent. Yes, I do need to get out more.

Hermione just isn't canonically black

  1. No reference to her being back, despite other characters being explicitly described as such
2 In the 15+ years between PS publish and CC casting, despite a million interviews, a huge Oinospin ff books etc. You would have thought she might have addressed the "misconception" about Hermione being white.
  1. If she was black, then why ON EARTH did JK say nothing when it came to casting the film? She had pretty much complete control of the casting of the trio. At no point did she point out that Hermione is supposed to be black. Not is tahere ny mention of the white Hermione being an unusual choice from JK in any interview in the last 10+ years.

Now, it doesn't matter that a black person plays Hermione. That's all fine. But, the character is now black. Just played by a black actress in a play!

00100001 · 10/09/2018 19:24

The character is not black *

Filzma · 10/09/2018 19:42

Agreed black Hermione was an after thought.

DistanceCall · 10/09/2018 19:52

There we go again. The character isn't canonically black. Or canonically white, either.

All JKR says in the book is that she has frizzy brown hair and wonky teeth. No mention of her skin colour at all.

DistanceCall · 10/09/2018 19:58

Oh, and 00100001, the way in which you assume that people (and characters) are white by default is pretty disgusting.

Dogswithteddies · 10/09/2018 19:59

Wavy- I would love to read a Hermione crime solving spin off. JKR are you reading? Please?!

Filzma · 10/09/2018 20:06

@DistanceCall, jk Rowling was really involved in the casting process yet failed to mention Hermione was black??? Idk if you watched the movies but Emma Watson was white.

DistanceCall · 10/09/2018 20:19

Filzma, perhaps the point for JKR was that it didn't matter very much if she was black or white?

She was involved in the films, and liked Emma Watson. She was involved in the play, and liked Noma Dumezweni.

The point is that it can go either way - becuase it's not that important.

VinoISVeritas · 10/09/2018 20:42

Ron is the youngest child who’ll end up as the oldest swinger in town in later life. 45-55, hair gone pepper & salt, out in his velour robes, throwing some shapes.
Gotta feel slightly sorry for the guy.
Harry & Hermione should’ve ended up together.
Ginny & Draco.
Neville & Luna
Dean & Seamus
Done.

00100001 · 10/09/2018 20:54

distancecall

Fuck off.

Hermione is white because EVERY character that is black is explicitly described as being black in the book.

amusedbush · 10/09/2018 20:56

Scorpius was everything and rocketed right up to my top 5 HP characters he was also clearly getting it on with Albus

I read/write a lot of ‘next gen’ fan fiction and loooove Albus and Scorpius as a couple. I haven’t seen Cursed Child so can’t base it on that but there is so much fanfic based around the Potter/Weasley kids that some stuff has become fanon.
