AIBU to only deep clean once a year i.e windows, doors and skirting boards etc

Washing is surely completely random? As in it gets done when it needs to be done? Who counts the weekly loads? Surely you just ram it in the machine when it occurs to you. FML.

SoyDora · 10/09/2018 20:58

Yeah, I have no idea how many loads of washing I do a week. When the washing basket is full I put a wash on. Some weeks I imagine I do more than others.

madeoficecream · 10/09/2018 20:59

YANBU
I do clean my skirting boards quite often though because its a very old house and the dust is ridiculous.
But I rarely clean windows and doors... maybe the handles a bit more often.
It depends on your house and if you have pets and kids etc

madeoficecream · 10/09/2018 21:00

I also have no idea how much washing I do... just whatever is in the basket whenever I remember to do a load... sometimes a couple of loads a day and sometimes none at all!

someonekillbabyshark · 10/09/2018 21:12

I deep clean every Sunday, because I do it weekly it takes no time at all. But I don't do the Windows weekly

Clionba · 10/09/2018 21:43

So it's not a deep clean then.

someonekillbabyshark · 10/09/2018 21:47

I do a DEEP clean twice a year we're I move my bed and drawers anything severely heavy but everything else, sofa dining tables DC beds gets moved weekly

JessieMcJessie · 10/09/2018 22:04

Fresta liquid can spill down the outside of the bottles and my son is likely to touch them and put his fingers in his mouth. I had to get rid of the toilet brush too. Better safe than sorry.

eelbecomingforyou · 10/09/2018 22:09

I clean all my skirting boards every day. The dust builds up and is unbearable otherwise.

eelbecomingforyou · 10/09/2018 22:09

Not.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/09/2018 22:49

We have a Saint Bernard and three kids so we have to do these things weekly.

Same principle here. We have a great dane and three spaniels, so have to chip the slobber off and rake up the hair from on, under, between and in things on a weekly basis.

Is hell, but better than not having dogs.

Nofunkingworriesmate · 10/09/2018 22:49

I hate these threads
Cleaning is so personal as most women clean the way their mums cleaned, and therefore any criticism is personally v offensive.

Clean to a standard that makes you happy
As long as it's not neglectful and your kids and animals are not damaged by the dirt.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/09/2018 22:55

I remember a thread on here a while back that asked how often people should clean their radiators.

I assumed that it must be a 11year cyclical job as if lived in my house for 10 years at the time and hadn’t got round to it yet

@Nofunkingworriesmate not a chance. My mum worked PT and our house was immaculate, I'm much more of a slob but then I travel a lot for work- if she could see my windows now she would be horrified!

I told her once I don't iron my bed covers, she was outraged.

Onto the skirting board points, they get hoovered when DH hoovers the house, there's no more cleaning done to them than that.

BlueTyger · 10/09/2018 23:32

Deep Clean - sounds awful - is it an American term?

I prefer Spring Clean - sounds so much more delightful generally.

I probably do a bit more cleaning at Spring and Autumn funnily enough, it seems a natural time to do it. But I don't have any definite schedule. I usually only clean the fridge or cooker when I notice its dirty. I hate cleaning under the cooker though - I know I should soon - I just can't face it!

To the poster above, I would love to iron my sheets and bed covers, I just don't have the time/energy.

ferrier · 10/09/2018 23:55

Cleaning under cooker? Shock I wouldn't know where to start... ie how to get it out.

But I do iron my sheets and bedcovers 😇😇😇

BlueTyger · 11/09/2018 00:05

Last time I tried, I nearly ripped all the lino. I had to get a carpet piece and wedge it along - it was like a major operation - I had to get help to do it and was shouting and sweating all the way through - and I still managed to rip the lino! I think my dislike of this also stems from moving flat some years ago and moving the cooker (after about a year) and discovering quite a few fat dead beetle things. Ugh! The combination today, makes it my most hated chore! Ironing sheets sounds so much more peaceful!

Haireverywhere · 11/09/2018 00:14

Oh no. Am I supposed to clean the radiators?

BasinHaircut · 11/09/2018 07:45

Washing is pretty routine for me because I hate the thought of drowning in it. It’s not like cleaning the house which can wait a day or two even if it’s minging. If you need clean pants then you need clean pants.

E.g. 1 white wash per week coz DH’s work shirts and DS’s school t-shirts have to be washed each week. We don’t really have much other white stuff so it always gets done on the weekend so it’s all clean for the following week and there are no ‘oh fuck’ moments.

Colours/darks is more random but I know we have more than 1 load’s worth per week. I work at home 2 days per week so usually do one on each WFH day if I can be arsed/remember.

2 beds, change one per week (roughly, not always), towels I change weekly and tend to wash after DS’s swimming lesson on a Sunday just because in my head that makes sense Grin

froufroufoxes · 11/09/2018 12:11

God I love a cleaning thread.

froufroufoxes · 11/09/2018 12:17

And, how often are people cleaning their ovens?

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 11/09/2018 12:20

I give my whole house a deep clean twice a year. This is when I do things like pull out the cooker, fridge and washer and clean behind. Skirting boards and the like are done as part of the normal cleaning of which I do a bit everyday.

For the past few weeks I have been laid up with a broken ankle and am pretty much immobile as I am still at the non weight bearing stage of recovery and I certainly see dust beginning to mount up on surfaces and skirting boards, dead insects on windowsill and cobwebs.
I will have to do a major clear when my cast comes off as no way could I live with this normally.

SoyDora · 11/09/2018 12:30

And, how often are people cleaning their ovens?

Never. I pay someone to do it once a year.

Haireverywhere · 11/09/2018 12:37

I ask the cleaner to do the oven but I don't know how often. Once/twice a year I think. I don't think I have defrosted the freezer for 2 years. Should that be done more often?

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 11/09/2018 12:52

My freezer is frost free so never needs to be defrosted. I just wipe out the baskets once in a while. The cooker I clean on as and when it looks like it might need it. Winter it needs more cleaning as it is being used more for roasts and things that might splash. Summer is more lighter fair so the oven doesn’t get so dirty.
