AIBU to only deep clean once a year i.e windows, doors and skirting boards etc

We have a Saint Bernard and three kids so we have to do these things weekly. I’m certainly no domestic goddess, it’s just if we don’t then it’s pretty gross. We do a declutter twice a year too, that’s our deepclean. We basically collect toys and items we don’t use and bin or charity shop them

FranticallyPeaceful · 08/09/2018 16:20

And skirting boards are every day! But only in the areas the dog uses.. the ones upstairs we can do less

Thehop · 08/09/2018 16:20

I do it weekly and am honestly killing myself. No, YANBU, you’re normal.

CurtainARama · 08/09/2018 16:21

Do you mean dusting them or cleaning them?

newhome123 · 08/09/2018 16:32

@CurtainARama
Both, I don't touch them for about a year at a time

newhome123 · 08/09/2018 16:33

Although if there was obvious dirt I would clean them. But I'm not going looking for dirt to clean something if it's not needed

Well they’d be dusty in my house after a year, but it’s only dust. If they don’t look awful, then it wouldn’t bother me. I’ve definitely lived in houses where I haven’t done them for a year. It’s only dust.

Rebecca36 · 08/09/2018 16:38

Blimey I don't know how many years it's been since I did a deep clean.

arranfan · 08/09/2018 16:39

I live under a very busy flight path (near the airport) and near motorways. There's always a lot of building in progress round and about.

The house looks dingy within a month with all of the dirty particulates. Sad

froufroufoxes · 08/09/2018 16:42

I didn't even know cleaning skirting boards was a thing until about a year ago. One of the many things I have been tutored in thanks to MN wisdom.
Now I get the kids to do it for pocket money a couple of times a year.

HowCanThisBeRight · 08/09/2018 16:47

I do skirtings daily when I hoover.. My windows are open wide all day and tree dust is horrendous.. But that's more of a quick thing.. To clean them maybe 3 times a year. Dp works long hours an when kids in bed I clean out of boredom.. Sad I know but I can't stand watching much TV and dislike reading.
Windows and nets I do every two months.
Again because of Windows open and a main Rd close by they get grubby very easily.
But I deep Clean properly every 3 months.. Again thro boredom.. I NEED A HOBBY lol.

seventhgonickname · 08/09/2018 16:53

The last house I lived got very dusty and I did have to clean the skirting boards often.
My present house has carpets,I moved her over 2 years ago and have only done them a few times if they looked like they needed it.Havent done a deep clean yetBlush.I have built in fridge so can't clean behind that even if I wanted to and we had new carpets last year so haven't had to clean under sofa yet.Have had to hover under beds as I nearly choked getting the under bed storage out with the dust I disturbed.
Might get to clean the dining room at Christmas but it is a GCSE art studio this year so all that mess is contained.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 08/09/2018 16:56

Fucking hell the sock idea is GENIUS!

I do my skirting boards once a month with the vac attachment that I use for ceiling cobwebs etc. Damp dusting probably once a year. TBH whilst I like a clean and tidy house I'm not sufficiently bothered about it to have a formal rota system Grin

Stopandlook · 08/09/2018 16:57

Never do them routinely. Occasionally if I notice they are dusty.

Methe · 08/09/2018 17:01

I remember a thread on here a while back that asked how often people should clean their radiators.

I assumed that it must be a 11year cyclical job as if lived in my house for 10 years at the time and hadn’t got round to it yet.

Apparently it should be a bit more frequent than that Grin

I have actually wiped my skirting boards today though. Get me!

Neshoma · 08/09/2018 17:10

The skirting that runs along the stairs is the worst, with dust being kicked up every time someone goes up or down.

Anyway I judge a house by its skirting. Next doors skirting by the front door is covered in mud where they kick off their shoes.

Beamur · 08/09/2018 17:16

It would be a near miracle for all my floors to be cleaned in a month let alone skirting! I clean it if it looks dirty. I never pull out things like fridges to clean behind them either - it gets cleaned when w get a new appliance. I guess my household standards are quite low but I can't be bothered in spending much time cleaning. It just gets dirty again...

BiteyShark · 08/09/2018 17:23

I have a cleaner come every 2 weeks for general cleaning and I think my skirting boards are done then. Once a year I do a deep clean of each room myself where I clean windows, blinds, move all furniture etc.

AdoraBell · 08/09/2018 17:57

YANBU your house, your choice.

seventhgonickname · 08/09/2018 18:05

The blinds always catch me unawares so the bedroom ones have been cleaned a couple if times and I have nearly got to that stage with the kitchen ones so on with the socks.!

BackinTimeforTea · 08/09/2018 18:10

Everything dog height or below gets filthy regularly - it’s up to you what you prefer though, there isn’t a right answer.

Fredkites · 08/09/2018 19:09

I don't really feel like our skirting boards get dirty. Or rather it's an oldish house, they are a bit grey in the first place and wiping them doesn't make much difference. I think the cleaner Hoovers across the tops and I wipe every so often, probably when moving furniture so about every 6 months.

Fredkites · 08/09/2018 19:09

But no dogs, and children reasonably non-sticky.

I deep-clean at the beginning of each season. (So every 13 weeks.) Just done the 'start of Autumn' deep clean. (Took 12-14 ish hours over 2 days...) Will do the pre Christmas one in early December... Smile

Couldn't do it only once a year.
