I second Astonish paste, in the blue tub. I've never found anything as good. It's very slightly abrasive. And it's non toxic.

Also, use very very hot water.

Agentornika · 09/09/2018 10:17

I've just got a new oven and it says do not use steam cleaners in big bold letters so be careful with that

blueshoes · 09/09/2018 10:20

How does a self-cleaning oven work. The sides of my oven have the white speckle but they still get really dirty. I have used OvenPride which gets stuff off and probably now ruined it but why did it get dirty in the first place if it was self-cleaning?

speakout · 09/09/2018 10:24

The walls of catalytic self-cleaning ovens are coated with materials acting as oxidation catalysts, usually in the form of catalyst particles in a binder matrix.

If you use an oven cleaner on this surface you will destroy the coating.

Figural · 09/09/2018 11:10

If you can afford it, think about a steam cleaner for the long term. I have one of these - the One-Plus model, which works wonders on a filthy oven without any chemicals except a little elbow grease.

My new oven has pyrolytic cleaning so doesn't need the steamer now, but the previous dirt-cheap oven needed cleaning after almost every roast and the steamer made short and easy work of it, a blessing for my dodgy back.

It clears blocked drains without any chemicals as well as lots of other uses. Unfortunately the crash in sterling after the referendum put prices up a lot from what they used to be.

Your oven looks alright to me but if you're not happy with it, get someone in to clean it. There are people known as 'Oven Angels' who do that.

9amtrain · 09/09/2018 11:31

Self cleaning oven? How does that work? :O

Bluelady · 09/09/2018 11:50

Magic.

kshaw · 09/09/2018 11:56

I use 'pink stuff' it's made by star drops and I get it from amazon cuts through grease really well

Gottagetmoving · 09/09/2018 11:56

I thought all ovens looked like that Grin

Since I last cleaned my disgusting oven, I've wiped it clean after every use so it doesn't get like that again.
Actually, my DP cleaned it and he used some oven cleaner and those bags that you put the racks in with some stuff that cleans them.

spanieleyes · 09/09/2018 12:03

I hate this thread! It made me log in to the Lakeland site, i've just bought the oven cleaner, shower cleaner, wood cleaner and turbo brush. I;m going to have to clean my house now Blush

Figural · 09/09/2018 12:19

How does a self-cleaning oven work? Yes, magic!

Superhigh temperatures, it burns all the dirt and grease in the oven into powder to be brushed out. The oven locks itself automatically so it can't be opened until the power's been turned off and it's cancelled the programme and cooled, for safety. My Miele oven, bought last January, has three different pyrolytic programmes depending on how dirty it is; I've only had to use the longest once once. It works Grin.

The model is an H2267 BP Active, but bought for £230 cheaper than Miele's price, competitive with Neff when I always thought Miele were a lot more expensive. I expect it to see me out! I love it.

My method;

  1. boil the kettle
  2. add teabag to mug and pour boiling water over
  3. leave for 3 minutes
  4. add sugar and milk to taste.
  5. put my feet up and stick a box set on. Lifes too short for scrubbing the oven!

(seriously I don't think iv ever cleaned an oven in my life)

TheFairyCaravan · 09/09/2018 14:21

Elbow Grease Spray and a green scourer will clean that door in minutes.

blueshoes · 09/09/2018 16:41

Speakout, thanks for the explanation. It does not explain how despite the coating and catalytic reactions, the sides still got dirty. When I used OvenPride on it, there was a ton of gunk I got off

I would rather destroy the coating than pretend the gunk is not there. It is a little Emperors New Clothes to not tackle the real issue. I am probably not the diligent sort of person to clean my oven after each use or regularly enough to benefit from a self-cleaning oven.

speakout · 09/09/2018 16:43

blueshoes

THe coating works best at very high temperatures, so let your oven run for an hour at max, if you still have surface gunk I would tackle with a cloth and wash up liquid while still warm.

blueshoes · 09/09/2018 16:50

Figural, I don't remember my oven having any pyrolytic jazz. So maybe it is not self-cleaning after all despite the speckle coating.

blueshoes · 09/09/2018 16:51

Speakout, thanks again.

ShyTallSun · 09/09/2018 16:54

I clean my oven (very infrequently I might add) with a thick paste of soda crystals. Wilkos is the only place I've seen it. Smear it on, leave it a while then use a bit of elbow grease and a metal scourer...good as new.

sparklepops123 · 09/09/2018 16:55

Mr muscle spray, I’m sad enough to do it every week to keep on top of it but it’s still like new a year later

TomHardysNextWife · 09/09/2018 16:56

Buy a new one. Simples.

I put a baking tray filled with hot water and sliced lemon in mine and leave it on a high heat for 20 mins or so but don't let the baking tray dry out. Then let it cool slightly and go in with a microfibre cloth and washing up liquid. And use a wire scrubber on the glass and shelves if that needs a bit of extra help.

I saw it once on a tv show and it really does make all the difference without using horrid chemicals.

penisbeakers · 09/09/2018 17:00

I swear by The Pink Stuff. I did my oven with it recently and it's sparkling.

bringbacksideburns · 09/09/2018 17:07

You name it I've tried it.
I need a new Oven really as the seal has split in the middle at the bottom.

Nothing works on the door. It's far worse than your's is in the photo. You cant see through it anymore.

Would you get one of those scraper things someone put a link up for? What would you use it with??. I really need to get the door glass cleaned - it looks bad.

Miscella · 09/09/2018 17:25

Cheapest most effective way is to use ammonia. However do NOT use if you have a gas oven with a pilot light.

Heat your oven up to 200 degrees than turn off (I also turn off at the wall) and place a large bowl of boiling water on the bottom rack and a dish of ammonia on the top rack. Close the door and leave overnight.

In the morning take the ammonia and bowl of water out of the oven. use paper towels to wipe off the worst of the grunge. Then fill a washing up basin with warm water and washing up liquid and add the dish of ammonia to it. Continue wiping out the oven and give a final rinse with clean water.

This is honestly the easiest and cheapest way to get your oven looking like new. I have tried so many different methods and this is the only one I use now. My oven glass was way worse than yours and it came up like new with very little effort using this method.
