To go to the police about what I saw?

I was driving by a car park of a cafe (children’s play type) on my way home from work when I pulled in to take a call. I saw a woman hit and physically harm a man around the same age (early twenties), I think it was her boyfriend or husband. She was obviously distressed and shouting, he was cowering. They had small children with them. She drove away a few minutes later and he went back in to the cafe, visibly upset.

I made a note of her number plate as she drove away with one of the children. Would you phone the police, knowing that they could trace them from her number plate?

Would you call if it were the man hitting the woman?

Amanduh · 06/09/2018 20:25

What a weird first reply.

SunsetOnTheHorizon · 06/09/2018 20:25

It is definetly worth calling it in. Seems like she could do with a visit from some local officers to give her a warning at the least.

anotherangel2 · 06/09/2018 20:26

Yes definitely call them.

IhatetheArchers · 06/09/2018 20:28

Yes, they had children with them. Witnessing dv is extremely damaging.

PeaceRaven · 06/09/2018 20:29

Yes, she has young children and is clearly a little unhinged.

ShirleyPhallus · 06/09/2018 20:30

Would you call if it were the man hitting the woman?

I assume that poster posted to make the point that if it were the other way around the OP wouldn’t hesitate and definitely would, so this should be no different

MidwifeDreams · 06/09/2018 20:31

Yes Shirley. Exactly.

Raven88 · 06/09/2018 20:31

Yes I would report it.

WellThisIsShit · 06/09/2018 20:31

Yes of course.

Male or female roles don’t really come into it do they? Which ever way round, a person was being attacked by another, hurt and scared, in front of young children.

Amanduh · 06/09/2018 20:32

I just reread it and thought oh actually that could be taken two ways I realise 🙈
Yes OP, poor bloke and kids

greendale17 · 06/09/2018 20:32

I would have called the police there and then.

If it was a man hitting a woman you wouldn’t have hesitated.

SockNRolla · 06/09/2018 20:52

Call the police.

WhyIsntGeorgeCalledPeterOrPaul · 06/09/2018 21:03

What a weird second reply.

TomHardysNextWife · 06/09/2018 21:05

Yes call it in.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 06/09/2018 21:06

For the children’s sake if nothing else you should call the police.

Bubblemagic11 · 06/09/2018 21:08

Yes, report it!

Ginorchoc · 06/09/2018 21:15

Yes please do, actually similar happened to my old horrid neighbours, they had a fight in ASDA and someone took their plate and reported them. He hammered in my door asking if it was legal. Sounds like at the min a welfare check is required.

Tistheseason17 · 06/09/2018 21:25

Yes.

Call 111 - they will record all intelligence and pass to relevant authorities who will act where necessary.

Nanasueathome · 06/09/2018 21:28

Why would you call NHS helpline?
Police is 101

Rebecca36 · 06/09/2018 21:33

Yes I would call the police.

lovelifex4 · 06/09/2018 21:35

Yes I would call the police

Houseworkavoider · 06/09/2018 21:40

Yes.

juneau · 06/09/2018 21:40

Yes, you should call the police. If she's hitting him in public and he's cowering, what do you think is going on behind closed doors? There are also DC witnessing this violence. Women can and do abuse their male partners and its every bit as bad as the other way around. Tell the police and let them decide what to do with your information.

MrsSarahSiddons · 06/09/2018 21:42

I wouldn't call the police. But I would if it was a man hitting a woman. I realise this is not a popular attitude on AIBU, but it's a realistic one. Because of relative physical strength of the sexes and because of statistics about male violence.
I expect to be flamed for expressing this pragmatic but unpopular view.
