To be so disappointed by GBBO

I use to love GBBO. I cannot get into it since it moved to Ch 4.
I’m not keen on Prue (doubt she has ever baked anything in her life)
Sandi is not funny
Noel looks like your mate from the pub who attended an interview far above his capabilities and got the job!

I miss Sue, Mel and Mary Berry

cafenoirbiscuit
That's nothing to do with 'PC' FFS Hmm
I was a contestant on Pointless and our episode was a week later than intended as they already had a younger female and male friend combo.
Honestly, the things people will claim 'PC BRIGADE GONE MAD' before actually doing any research or thinking of their own is ludicrous.

Marylou2 · 05/09/2018 16:43

Absolutely love GBBO. Much prefer Noel and Sandi to Mel and Sue. What’s not to like?

Satsumaeater · 05/09/2018 16:49

I wasn't happy when I heard it was moving to C4, and still don't like the advert breaks.

But they were brave enough not to change it. They had to obviously replace the presenters and don't have time for the history bit. But otherwise it's the same and I like it. And the new presenters are fine.

raisedbyguineapigs · 05/09/2018 16:52

I agree that the Hollywood handshake is cringe. Its not a thing. Especially when those who get it behave like they've just won the lottery! I like the new show. I do thingies they are trying to ramp up the drama a bit too much with the challenges, probably hoping to have a 'bingate' style drama where it felt more organic before. However the worst thing they've done is make an extra slice an hour of waffling long. They've changed something that was punchy and funny into waffly boringness.

LeftRightCentre · 05/09/2018 17:03

Can't abide Pru or Paul. Noel looks like something out of a nightmare. Think it's shit now.

Mouseville65 · 05/09/2018 17:22

I love Sandi and Noel. I like pru, Paul is a bit creepy.

steppemum · 05/09/2018 17:24

I loved it before, and I love it now. we always watch it on record, so whizz through ad breaks. Great trick is to begin watching at 8;15, and you hit the end at the same time as the live TV, but no ads!

I really like Noel and Sandi. I like them both anyway, and like them on this. They seem to have found their stride more this series, and I think Noel is really nice with the contestants

2018Already · 05/09/2018 17:53

Way too many ad breaks so now 15 minutes too long. I lose concentration and end up looking at my phone like a PP said.

2018Already · 05/09/2018 17:55

Also I feel a bit like I’ve seen it all before yet they seem to be running out of ideas. What was the niche green thing they made last night? It put me off eating cake ever again.

bingbongnoise · 05/09/2018 17:56

Still like it sorry OP.

Sandstormbrewing · 05/09/2018 17:56

You are all wrong! Hated it on the BBC but love it now, much more fun. I don't like PH and Prue but love Sandi and Noel is growing on me, whereas I really don't like Mary and Mel and Sue are normally alright, but I didn't like them on GBBO.

Thesearmsofmine · 05/09/2018 17:57

I prefer it with Noel and Sandi, I wish sleazy Paul Hollywood had left though!

thornyhousewife · 05/09/2018 17:58

I really like the new presenters but not feeling the contestants this year.

pineappple · 05/09/2018 17:58

I wasn't keen when they announced they were moving from BBC to C4, however have enjoyed it much more since the move! I think the whole show feels fresher. Plus can't stand Mel & Sue!

Meckity1 · 05/09/2018 18:00

I'd rather be trapped in a lift with Pru than Mary. Mary looks a tad vampiric

FoofFighter · 05/09/2018 18:01

I love it generally even though I don't like Noel.
I do have a problem this year with them showing nearly every shot of Briony involving her hands. And not doing the same to the others. It's like long lingering shots to prove how inclusive they are Hmm

MrsFezziwig · 05/09/2018 18:14

ToffeePennie the fact that you don’t think Prue has ever baked anything because you personally have never heard of her says more about you than her. And two of the presenters are not supposed to be bakers, they’re there for the comedy element - did you think Mel & Sue were master bakers?

I was Shock when I heard Noel was going to be a presenter as I didn’t think his off the wall humour would work at all, but actually he’s been really good.

strawberrypenguin · 05/09/2018 18:40

The new line up is lacking something for me. They don't seem to have gelled very well. It's lacking that cozy feel it used to have.
I used to look forward to every episode but I've not watched many of the new ones. I miss Mary, Mel and Sue

InezGraves · 05/09/2018 19:39

DH and I were only saying last night that we'd almost forgotten the old version, despite having watched it annually from the beginning -- because this one largely works equally well, and they haven't really changed anything except one judge and the presenters.

I think I'm always mildly bored by it at the very beginning every year, and think it's not as good as last year's, but then realise annually that it's only because there are too many contestants at the beginning, and it never gets properly interesting until at least three or four have gone. and there's more airtime for the others.

And to the person complaining about their friend being refused because she was a white woman with children -- that's entirely normal for a TV show that's trying to cast a variety of people with interesting and different stories, experiences and culinary traditions.

It's a casting process, not a blind test to find the people who are literally the twelve best bakers out of all applicants, which might make remarkably dull TV.

If you look at the application form (can't find one now as applications aren't open, but I read one last year or the year before), they are as interested in what you bring to your baking as in the baking itself, what stories you have about why something is your favourite cake to make, who you bake for, what you do for a living etc.

Twelve fortysomething white British women who work in offices all making very traditional Victoria sponges flavoured with vanilla will appeal to a less wide demographic than a range of ages, sexes, ethnicities, who do more experimental things, or use recipes or flavours from a BAME cuisine, and if they are firefighter who bakes for their watch, or a food historian with an interest in historic recipes, or a giant body builder who does beautiful, delicate sugar work, so much the better, I imagine.

And I assume the filmed auditions are to see who performs best in front of the camera, and who is capable of talking to the presenters while baking without being terribly nervous. Or shouting DO GO AWAY, I'M TRYING TO MAKE A FONDANT EIFFEL TOWER.

actualpuffins · 06/09/2018 11:25

I prefer Prue because she is an all round food expert, not just a baker.

Ever heard of Leith's, Toffee?

Prue has more experience in her little finger than Mary Berry will ever have.

londonmummy1966 · 06/09/2018 12:55

I don't mind GBBO in either format but what bugs me is that Jo Brand has a new co-presenter who is just not funny. Presumably C4 didn't think a woman could carry a prime time show on her own?

LaurieMarlow · 06/09/2018 13:07

Or shouting DO GO AWAY, I'M TRYING TO MAKE A FONDANT EIFFEL TOWER.

I'll never understand why more of them don't snap. Grin

PinkAvocado · 06/09/2018 13:38

Is there really nothing they can do to cool that tent down?! It is rubbish when something goes wrong for them because of the heat rather than ability.

actualpuffins · 06/09/2018 13:43

I thought he was quite funny but went on a bit and wasn't really necessary at all. Is he on every week then? Ugh.

Heat is going to be a factor quite often this year. If Rahul could do all that excellent chocolate work then no-one can use "it's hot" as an excuse.

PinkAvocado · 06/09/2018 13:50

I think that that level of heat is going to be a massive factor in things not going as well as they should. The fact that some turned out as planned doesn’t take away from it being something that is a frustrating hindrance.
