To be so disappointed by GBBO

I use to love GBBO. I cannot get into it since it moved to Ch 4.
I’m not keen on Prue (doubt she has ever baked anything in her life)
Sandi is not funny
Noel looks like your mate from the pub who attended an interview far above his capabilities and got the job!

I miss Sue, Mel and Mary Berry

ToffeePennie - where have you been not to have heard of Paul, Prue, Sandi and Noel?

GooseFartingInTheFog · 04/09/2018 21:59

Love Noel and Sandi, always loved them separately and think they’re both great and a lot less panto than Mel and Sue.

The whole “Hollywood handshake” thing I could do without, it’s just tedious

Treaclepie19 · 04/09/2018 22:00

I like it better now. Love Noel in anything and Sandi is good also.

PinkAvocado · 04/09/2018 22:00

I prefer it. I was bored by it when it was on the bbc!

Orlandointhewilderness · 04/09/2018 22:02

you do realise that Prue Leith had a michelin starred restaurant don't you, as well as decades of teaching cordon bleu cookery?! I think it is fair to assume she has baked in her life!
i like prue, can't stand paul and am not getting sandi and noel at all!

esk1mo · 04/09/2018 22:05

i did prefer it on BBC but didnt like Mary Berry. I love Noel, he makes me proper laugh out loud.

The contestants are odd though. I saw
someone else say none of them really had fun when baking, compared to previous contestants.

Leobynature · 04/09/2018 22:05

i know Prue has been a restaurateur, chef and written books (quick wiki search 😊) she just seems very annual around food. Can’t imagine her getting her hands dirty with baking then enjoying the calories

OP posts:
ToffeePennie · 04/09/2018 22:06

I genuinely haven’t heard of any of them. Possibly because my tv watching was limited to gbbo, Big Bang and dr who (I was living with my inlaws until Easter and that was the only tv watching I could do)
I’d heard of Mary berry well before gbbo - I have an awful lot of her recipe books and my mum is a pastry chef so she used to tell me that “mary never gets it wrong” but no I’ve never heard of prue. I used to like seeing if I could bake whatever they were working on each week, but it seemed to stop being about the baking when channel 4 took over.

BarbedBloom · 04/09/2018 22:07

I don’t watch it anymore now. I just can’t get on with it on channel 4. I tried to watch the last series but ended up turning it off

margotsdevil · 04/09/2018 22:07

I think the technical challenges are getting more and more obscure and it's just not the same Sad

Nicknacky · 04/09/2018 22:08

Why have it set in a tent with the heat it causes? Or does it just make better tv seeing them struggling in the temperature?

SpookyMuldersMum · 04/09/2018 22:08

Oh I don’t know, I think it’s still nice but do miss the BBC line up.

Agree Prue seems really stiff and formal but it seems like she is trying harder this year to be friendlier and more likeable.

Probably prefer Mel and Sue but I think Noel in particular is lovely with the contestants. Just wish they would get the poor buggers some aircon!

rosamacrose · 04/09/2018 22:13

I think when it started on BBC it was about baking.
Personalities took over. Mary, then Paul became the feature in the end.
It moved to C4.
Paul and to a lesser extent, Prue, are now the feature.
Not so much about baking.
I've enjoyed the two episodes so far but won't follow much now, probably, because there's no reason to. Paul and Prue, what's to see? I do love Sandi and Noel tho.

Laiste · 04/09/2018 22:13

Let's think. I preferred it before, but it's still ok.

Pru is an obvious attempt at a direct replacement for Mary. Was never mad about Mary so not bothered about that switch.

Sandi and Noel - the two comedy replacements ... they're alright. Mel Sue were slightly funnier IMO.

Paul H? The only person who is unchanged ... i think he's a big head who knows less than he makes out BUT,you know what? i think his familiarity saves the show for me. Strangely.

They need to be brave enough to not try to change it any more. Don't tweak. Let us learn to love BBO again just as it is. It was the comforting sameyness which i loved about the BBC version.

Dogmatix34 · 04/09/2018 22:13

I much prefer it on Channel 4. Really like Prue ( I’ve heard Mary is horrible in real life) and think Noel and Sandi are great.

PattiStanger · 04/09/2018 22:13

I don't understand the relevance of Easter Toffee all of the GBBO crew have been known since well before this April.

Sandi and Noel dont quite gel imo but I still enjoy it

bookbuddy · 04/09/2018 22:16

I prefer it on c4 and find it more entertaining.

user1511042793 · 04/09/2018 22:16

I loved it on bbc and now on c4 this series seems much more settled in. Went off Mary when I saw her at good food show. Not nice wth no sense of humour. I had watched her since a child with my mum and was soooo disappointed.

heavymetalheatherhead · 04/09/2018 22:17

I've always loved Noel but was really nervous about the choice of him for GBBO. He is brilliant! He's funny but also so kind to the contestants. The rest of them are fine, and the rest hasn't changed a jot, so I still love it.

scottishthistle77 · 04/09/2018 22:17

Pru has said in the past, before the last series of GBBO, that she doesn't have a sweet tooth and is really not a fan of sweets or cakes. I know it's not all sweet things, but they do make up a majority of the bakes, and think it shows when she tastes things. I used to love Mary's beaming face and twinkly eyes when she tried something she liked.

I quite like Noel and Sandy, but preferred Mel and Sue.

ProseccoPoppy · 04/09/2018 22:18

I quite like Sandy and Noel, Prue is vastly experienced but for some reason I can’t quite warm to her. I like GBBO in spite of Paul, who has always been a bit of a pain tbh.

Synecdoche · 04/09/2018 22:20

I just miss the history sections!
