What contraception are you on?

I just want peoples views about what they are on. How old they are. And how it effects your periods.

I am 43 this year. I have been on the pill called cerelle for years now and have been very happy with it. Have had no periods for 99%of that time.

But now for the last 5 months I have been getting periods that last for weeks and weeks and really heavy. So I feel the time has come for a change.

I have an appointment booked to see the doctor to discuss things on Friday.

I know my age may be a factor to what I can be put on? Is that right. What are u on and how do u like it ?

Depo, implant, mirena, copper coil would all be options.

Wonkydonkey44 · 03/09/2018 13:29

I’m 46 I’ve tried the mini pill ( bled constantly) the implant ( bled constantly ) and the copper coil but my periods were horrendous .
I can’t go on the combined pill because of my age either . 😫

Aprilshowersnowastorm · 03/09/2018 13:31

@47none.

Jowak1 · 03/09/2018 13:35

I'm 40 this year and have been on Cilest pill for about 20 years. I felt it was the right time to come off the pill having been on it for so long and my husband had a vasectomy.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 03/09/2018 14:06

Thanks for the messages. It all helps

wonkeydonkey44 Have you pushed the combined pill with your doctor? I was exactly the same as you with the other forms of contraception but the. had a heated discussion with the doctor about the TRUE risks of me being on the combined pill at 37 years old (which they really didn’t want to give me). He conceded that due to normal BMI and non smoking status the risks are minimal and I’ve been on it very happily for a couple of years now!

Chattycat78 · 03/09/2018 14:13

Very relevant right now for me.

I’m on cerelle, I’m
39. I’ve been bleeding now for 2.5 weeks without stopping. Sad. What’s weird is that I was largely fine with it until now so I don’t get what has changed. I’ve got a gp appt this afternoon because I’m worried in case something more sinister is going on Sad

Other things I’ve tried are/ combined pill. Gives me headaches.

The coil- hoho- disaster. It perforated my uterus and I had to have it removed via keyhole surgery.

God knows what the other options are.

Chattycat78 · 03/09/2018 14:16

Anyone else on cerelle- have you been fine and then suddenly got bleeding for weeks? Maybe it’s common if so - I thought something was Wrong as it’s not like ive just started taking it or something....

FrenchFancie · 03/09/2018 14:18

I’m 39 and just came off mini pill. Using condoms while oh decides if he will have snip or not. I can’t take any more hormones as it’s wrecking my body - 3 stone weight gain and hair falling out all over the place. Put down to low estrogen & testosterone due to long term pill use by my gp 🤔

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 03/09/2018 14:22

@Chattycat78 let me know what they say. Not sure I want to go down any other route. So hoping they will let me just try another pill. ? I get thrush when using stuff for periods so having none for ages has been wonderful. Now I’m back to irritation and thrush again.

I have been in the pill for so long. Not sure what my periods would be like now. They were horrible before

I’m 44. Post babies I couldn’t tolerate any hormonal contraceptives so I’ve had a copper coil for the last 8 years. No issues at all. No heavy periods. PMT is not gr at to be honest but as I have no additional hormones coming in I can only blame that on my natural hormones!

Chattycat78 · 03/09/2018 14:28

dontgive a monkeys have you had similar then- ie it was fine and then suddenly you’re getting loads of bleeding for weeks?

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 03/09/2018 14:37

Interesting thread. I went off the pill to have babies then was either pregnant or breastfeeding for the next 5 years so had a wonderful break from periods. It came back with a vengeance of course. Incredibly heavy and so painful it felt like labour and almost made me pass out. This was the complete opposite to my periods all my life which were light and almost painless. Oh and the PMT is shocking.

I went to the Dr and she said contraceptive pill is the only option unless I want to try Agnus Castus for three months first. I did do and it really helped with the PMT and skin and bloating and all that good stuff. The pain is so much better than it was, but now my periods last about two weeks and are still really heavy. I’m thinking I may have to go back on the pill now though I really don’t want to. Does anyone know if the pill is good for PMT?

IAmAllAstonishment · 03/09/2018 14:41

I had depo as a teen and bled constantly. It also happened on the implant and the ring.

The (combined pill) pill gave me migraines.
My DP is a doctor and recently (with the help of my GP) convinced me to try the depo again as my adult body would likely handle it better than my teenage one.

I feel like perhaps he didn’t FULLY believe I had bled for 3 months straight and thought I was exaggerating. Boy did he regret it. Bled for 3 months until it wore off. I’m still not back to normal 8 weeks later.

I'm 32, I can't take hormonal contraception any more due to my dad & late grandad having DVT. I took the combined pill Brevinor for 15 years, but my doctor removed me from it as I'd gained lots of weight and it the risk of complications rose alongside family history of DVT and brain haemorrhage. They gave me the mini pill, which made me climb the walls, I was evil on it, so DH persuaded me to come off it They then offered me the DEPO injection and said my other option was a coil, which I didn't want.

We just have to use condoms, until GP agrees to DH having the snip, which they won't based on me being 32, DH is 36 and we only have one child :( I'd go back on Brevinor in a heartbeat, I had very little periods, could prevent them by taking back to back packets of pills if needed, but they were really light anyway so didn't make a difference. Sorry if that's not much help x

zigzagbetty · 03/09/2018 14:59

I recently got put on the combined pill at 39 and a month in ended up in a&e with a pulmonary embolism. I would avoid it like the plague if I could turn back time!

shartsi · 03/09/2018 15:09

Tubal ligation. No side effects at all. Periods normal and no hormones!

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 03/09/2018 15:31

@Chattycat78 yes. Was on it for years and had nothing. And bang. Regular every month.

BitchQueen90 · 03/09/2018 15:43

I'm 28 and on the mini pill. Been on it since DS was born 5 years ago and haven't had a period since. It's been a dream for me, absolutely no side effects at all.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 03/09/2018 18:21

Wonder how many different types of pills there are to try. Is there an age limit to being on them I wonder ?

OP posts:
BarbaraofSevillle · 03/09/2018 18:51

I too wonder about the age limit for the pill. I'm coming up to 45, non smoker, slightly overweight but good blood pressure and there's been no warning of stopping the pill due to my age. I can't make decisions quickly so get anxious about going for a pill check and being suddenly told no more. I'm probably peri menopausal anyway, so I don't know how long I've got left IYKWIM.

Nurse did try to encourage me to get the implant a few months back, but I've heard so many horror stories, it's put me off, even though I know a colleague, who's a year or two older than me has one, or did have, it's a while since she mentioned it and loves it. Contrast with SIL and loads on here who had awful problems and had to beg GP to allow removal.

JennyBlueWren · 03/09/2018 18:53

Cerrelle while waiting for coil. I worry about forgetting to take it.

Had the implant for 8 years but think it was affecting my moods.

YolandaTheYeti · 03/09/2018 18:58

Like a pp, I haven’t had any luck with hormonal contraception since my dcs were born either. I’ve had a mirena, cerelle, cerazette and also a combined pill which I can’t remember the name of. Had problems with all of them.

I’m bfing atm (and not having all that much sex anyway), so just using condoms. But I honestly don’t know what we’ll do after that. I’m scared to try anything else tbh as I’ve had so many issues!

bluechairs · 03/09/2018 19:04

I'm 23 and on Nexplanon implant is on my second and it's been 4 years.

Insertion is very easy and painless, removal CAN be easy but for me it was 45 minutes, 2 holes, tugging and nausea inducing as the anaesthetic wore off and blood everywhere. Recover was v fast though (and I didn't faint for one - go me)

Symptom wise DP says my moods are worse and I have to say my fuse does feel shorter but I'm not sure if that's just not being 18 and carefree.
My periods are heavier but we're v v light before (3 days didn't even need a pad at night) and last about 5 days. Some irregular ones at the beginning.sometimes I have tenderness on my chest but that could be anything.

I have anxiety but again don't really think it's the contraceptions.

Overall I haven't become pregnant, bleeding is normal-ish and changing every 3 years is a good time as it's no faff but shouldn't need early removal
