What contraception are you on?

I just want peoples views about what they are on. How old they are. And how it effects your periods.

I am 43 this year. I have been on the pill called cerelle for years now and have been very happy with it. Have had no periods for 99%of that time.

But now for the last 5 months I have been getting periods that last for weeks and weeks and really heavy. So I feel the time has come for a change.

I have an appointment booked to see the doctor to discuss things on Friday.

I know my age may be a factor to what I can be put on? Is that right. What are u on and how do u like it ?

Copper coil for 18 months. Periods are heavy but manageable. I’ve found my pms has gotten very bad on it however.

OutPinked · 05/09/2018 14:39

I’m currently pregnant but before had been on the combined pill for years with little ill effect. I briefly tried the implant and it was absolutely horrendous, I just bled constantly and completely lost my libido. I had to beg and cry for it to be removed but thankfully once it was, the bleeding stopped. I’d never do that again.

We’re going to use condoms for a while until DP gets the snip after the baby is born.

Condoms for me (41). Don't want to shove a load of synthetic hormones into my system.

freshstart24 · 05/09/2018 15:25

Mid 40s. Copper coil. I love it.

No synthetic hormones playing with my moods, no forgetting to take the pill. No noticeable effects on my periods.

Totally relevant to me right now OP - thank you for starting this thread. I was on Yasmin for years, then had kids - went back on it and suffered chronic mastitis every month, and horrendously heavy periods. Since then, I have tried 5 other pills, all woeful. Now we are using withdrawal method as contraception and I am a fucking idiot and get shit scared every single month until period arrives. Problem is, husband can't use condoms as he has lack of sensation in his penis due to spinal injury, and he won't have a vasectomy due to previous nerve damage, so i guess what i'm saying is, interested to see the options and thoughts on this thread.

Mirena coil. Have a bit of spotting now and again. Otherwise I forget its there :-)

I'm 28.

Was on microgynon for very very heavy and painful (turned out to be endo) periods as a teenager.

I put on a bit of weight and got quite spotty but I can't be sure if that was down to the pill or just being a teenager.

Hit 18, went to college and discovered alcohol and takeaways and got too fat for microgynon, got put on the mini pill cerazette (later changed to cerelle) and got on very well with both of those, no periods, mood swings, spots, weight actually dropped, libido was totally fine etc.

Conceived ds accidently on the pill (it would seem that there is some kind of super fertility in the family as I and a cousin on my mum's side were also conceived on the pill even with perfect use, it does happen!)

Periods were ok for a year or so after giving birth but got progressively heavier and more painful to the point where they were affecting day to day life (lasting ten days every three and half weeks, costing a small fortune in painkillers and affecting partners work as I am a sahm and couldn't stand up without pucking /occasionally fainting so he had to take time off work)

Went back on mini pill to control them again but for whatever reason didn't get on with it at all after dc. Gave me awful headaches.

Tried depo in a bit of desperation on a recommendation from a friend and couldn't rate it highly enough. It's honestly life changing and I get a little pang of satisfaction and gratitude for modern medicine whenever I realise I would normally be on but am instead happily living my life pain free and not on my knees exhausted from anemia.

Honestly though I would suggest having a word with your nearest sexual health clinic. They tend to be a bit more clued up than Gps in regards to contraception and it's pros and cons in my experience. (gp said painful periods were just because I was young, shc visited college, took my history and smelled a rat, looked most unimpressed with GPs diagnosis and referred me for tests and the rest is history)

I took a pill name I can't remember for a few years which I came off to tycoon dd1 when I was 29. Used condoms until trying for ds when I was 31. Had a Mireya after he was born but got pregnant on it (it slipped into my cervix) and had dd2 when I was 32.

I'd been very, very unwell when pg with ds and dd2, I had pregnancy induced kidney stones and spent a lot of time in hospital, another pregnancy would have cost me my left kidney, I was lucky that didn't happen in my last pregnancy. So dh managed to get a vasectomy while I was pregnant with dd2, at 6 months.

Never worried about contraception again, it was totally straightforward for him and 15 years later still have no worriesSmile

40 and none.

Not actively TTC (as that seems unlikely now-we tried and failed) but happy it it happens.

I had to give up hormonal contraception in mid 30's as nothing was right with any of them after being on various pills for years.

Pill

Coil

Implant- current

Ive had the implant twice before when i was younger (14-16) and it didnt agreee with me. It made me feel sick, i was spotting constantly so opposite of what i wanted, bloated, constipated.

Ive got the implant now 7 year after, after trying other things that never worked for me, and i must of agreed with it. Ive had it a year now and ive been fine. Not been sick, not had one period. Nothing. Im really enjoying it this time.

Ive had my kids now, so when its due to come out im having inserted straight back in until i qualify for a hysterectomy.

Hi sisters, I've been taking zelleta for 3 months now. The last 6 weeks I've become really fatigued all the time. I was wondering if any of my fellow woman have experienced anything similar. Thanks kel

  • Pill made me vomit most mornings at 5am (and got achy chest). Quit after 4 months.
  • Mirena killed my sex drive, made periods very long and hurt DH during sex. Had it taken out after a few months and now, reading about the litigation, I feel I dodged a bullet.
  • Have known 3 friends on the implant and all struggled with depression after going on it. Decided never to try it.
  • Used condoms until started family, turned out to not need contraception after that.

So I would suggest condoms are superior to most things on the market (also really liked how they contain the mess afterward) but I know they’re unfashionable, I guess because the guy actually has to do something instead of just leave it all to the woman.

firesong · 20/11/2020 12:12

I don't like hormonal contraception. So I had a copper coil but they removed it after about 6 months as I had some microorganisms.

So now it's condoms. Not keen on them really, but can't think of anything else.
