Just seen the most enormous spider in my DS bedroom - would I be OK to just shut the door and never use the room again! DS can sleep in the lounge.

Cant tell if its a tegenaria domestica or tegenaria gigantea, although some experts are saying theyre not even seperate species now.

I love them, I think theyre cool. The big ones can be pretty impressive. Completely harmless to humans

Clandestino · 04/09/2018 12:16

Oh, they are beautiful!!!!
I love them. We just rescued one from our cat yesterday and released him in the loo downstairs. It's getting cold so they should be released outside.

Clandestino · 04/09/2018 12:18

I will quote my DD while looking at a house spider in our bathtub:

I don't understand why people are so scared of them. They are soooo cuuute and lovely!

lastqueenofscotland · 04/09/2018 12:19

I found one in my fucking fridge Envy
I may or may not have stood up the stairs and shouted instructions at DP to deal with it Blush

MadameOvary · 04/09/2018 12:30

Branleuse

I do love my "tegies" I put a spider doorknob on the shed as loads live in there. Also masses of Amorobius Fenestralis, which are also cute but not as big.

DD excitedly sent me a pic of a huge one when in her Dad's house. She said "It's lovelllyyyyy"

nannybeach · 04/09/2018 13:13

Its not the first big spider of the year, its just that you dont always see them!

BlooperReel · 04/09/2018 13:20

Have recently moved into a much larger house with a big garden, fuck me there seems to be spiders every day! Lots of teeny ones mainly, but have had 2 big bad boys who I am afraid I had to get DH to murder because otherwise I'd have moved out

Ozgirl01 · 04/09/2018 13:29

Lol I'm glad none of you live in Australia! The biggest spider I've ever caught was a huntsman (non-poisonous) - I tried to use an ice-cream container, but it's front legs were still sticking out, so I had to use a big bowl instead.

Cottongusset · 04/09/2018 14:00

You are all so brave - I am afraid they are without exception introduced to the sole of whatever footwear I have on at the time (when the DH isn't looking). He wont kill them, but he hates them too and it is such a performance putting a glass over them and slipping a card underneath and evicting them out of the house with me shouting "Get it quick - don't bring it near me" Eeek - and the big ones do bite - my son used to pick them up and put them outside until one bit him - two fang marks on his hand - now they get intimate with his soles too.

EmNetta · 04/09/2018 14:14

Last week I dealt with the first two of the season - am now dreading seeing the third....
I always used to put them outside under a glass, but seem to have lost my nerve since getting older (and probably slower too, as I can't always hit them first time, which is awful)

Notsureanymore1 · 04/09/2018 15:02

I'm a catcher not a killer - but my 17yr old daughter covers them in half a ton of hairspray then waits in another room until I get home (wuss!!!) I hate Autumn as she covers the outside of her bedroom and all the window sills with conkers - usually culminating in me hopping round muttering expletives when I've got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and trod on one of the said conkers !!! Does my head in !!!

speakout · 04/09/2018 15:32

Not something I can get worked up about. There are several lurking in my house right now- I leave them be.

I anyones' house there are probably hundreds, inside sofas, behind furniture. We are probably within 6 foot of a spider wherever we are in a home.

exhaustedrundown · 04/09/2018 15:33

We have these.......they are HUGE 😳 luckily in the garden except 1 they are terrifying

had one of those the other day. September is always spider month

yellowDahlia · 04/09/2018 15:36

We were all up at 3am because of DD2 crying her eyes out - she thought there were spiders on the walls after spotting a HUGE one scuttling across the hallway outside her room the night before. Bastard spiders Envy

RightyHoChaps · 04/09/2018 16:07

I came down in the morning to the lounge last week, with my DS in tow, as per usual.

Sat down and turned on the TV. I'd left a few dishes and glasses in the lounge the previous night. I went to pick one up off the table when out the corner of my eye I saw something not quite right, something fuzzy and black in the glass...

I looked down and to my horror, there she was... the giant spider from Lord of the Rings... Sat in the fucking glass, staring up at me and daring me to put my hand across the top.

Calmly and coolly (screaming on the inside), I called my OH down to see the beast. She filled the whole bloody glass and you could see the individual dark hairs on her legs.

I took her outside and tried to drop her on the gravel to find a new home. She'd obviously made her home in there as she didn't go easy and then she plopped (and I mean that literally, you heard her hit the ground) on the floor and scuttled off.

Never seen a beast like it!! She was immense! Safe to say I'm nothing to leave glasses lying around anymore.

Bloody freak spider breeding season... don't even get me started on the 6 (count 'em 6) Segestria florentina spiders (Google them) outside our house Shock

purpleweasel · 04/09/2018 16:39

I don't mind the big buggers though I won't pick them up as they do bite. I don't like the spindly "ghost" spiders as much but tolerate them all - their house as much as mine as far as I'm concerned. Unfortunately they are dinner as far as the cats are concerned.

Morethanthisprovincallife · 04/09/2018 17:18

The worst was one whose legs spanned the entire bowl in kenwood mixer.

It was horrific. Uk.

RuggerHug · 04/09/2018 17:18

Bastards.

I only need to feel a clothing label scratch me at the wrong angle - especially when getting dressed - and it's enough for me to do the spider dance like a crazy person. Uurrgghhh. Terrifying little fuckers. Caught one a couple of years ago, literally sweating with fear by the time I got the pint glass over it. Was busy congratulating myself on my awe inspiring bravery when it managed to move the glass a good couple of mm across the floor! Ohhh the horror!! Big book on top right away until DH came in to evict it. Move that, ya bastard. So afraid it actually would start shoving a Marian Keyes across the kitchen I bloody detest spider season!! 🕸🕷🕷

littleemma1 · 04/09/2018 17:56

My skin is crawwwling reading this thread!!!
I hate them, hate them, hate them. DH usually is under strict instructions to move them, I can just about put a glass over a big one if I need too.
Honestly dont know how I will manage when kids come along and I need to the "adult" and not do the spider dance anymore whilst freaking out!

QueenOfCatan · 04/09/2018 19:33

onestep I went and googled a harvestman after that, I always thought that they were spiders but that's good to know just incase I ever squish one! (try to avoid squishing things usually!)

lexer · 05/09/2018 08:01

@beefycake, that's an outside one isn't it? I don't mind them it's the big wolf spiders that come inside that freak me out.

BookWitch · 05/09/2018 08:20

My dog spends the evenings stalking them around the living room. Better that the telly.

She never catches them though, she's useless.

Aus84 · 05/09/2018 08:29

We have these cuties in our rock wall in the garden.

Needless to say, I've barricaded the area so the kids don't go near them.
