Just seen the most enormous spider in my DS bedroom - would I be OK to just shut the door and never use the room again! DS can sleep in the lounge.

I had mine end of July Shock

Came back from camping and was middle of heatwave. All windows had been shut and house was like a furnace.

And our big fella was waiting on the doormat either like an armed guard or begging to be let out.

Ds took him outside where despite it being 30° was probably cooler 😂

puppymouse · 03/09/2018 19:43

We get a lot of the spindly ones. I leave them be unless DD asks me to remove it as they don't really bother me and apparently eat the chubby ones.

As someone who is/was petrified of the chubby ones I have had to man up big time in an attempt to show DD she doesn't need to freak out. I always remove them with a glass, a piece of junk mail over the top and out the window. Unfortunately if they catch me by surprise or move I still stop being able to breathe and freak out. But I try to do it silently. I have found myself involuntarily flapping my arms and hands repeatedly trying to breathe again and think rationally.

DD finds this curious. At the moment. I suspect when she's older she'll realise I'm close to losing control of my bladder with terror 😫

DickensianHysteric · 03/09/2018 19:48

I like spiders but even I did a little yelp when I felt one crawling on my wrist this morning - must have picked it up on my sleeve reaching for something in the kitchen. He was huge, and was evicted from the premises very swiftly!

Jamieson90 · 03/09/2018 19:51

Your house is probably full of spiders that you just don't see. They know your routine! Honestly! I once went into my living room an hour earlier than I normally do one morning and there was this big dock off spider just chilling on the wall. Almost like it was looking at me going "WTF what are you doing up so early! You're not supposed to be up for another hour!"

I don't mind them though tbh, they kill other insects.

UpstartCrow · 03/09/2018 19:54

We had one climb over the doorstep into the living room and it was so big we heard it! Whole DF had collective hysterics. We had to use a rug to herd it through the house and out the front door.

Jamieson90 · 03/09/2018 19:54

Also, Lucas the spider Smile

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 03/09/2018 19:58

We’ve had a fair few medium spiders in the corners of rooms but have just left them as have also had loads of flies and thought if they deal with the flies they can stay but the buggers haven’t dealt with them at all!

JamPasty · 03/09/2018 20:10

I have false widow spiders in the shed. We have a deal whereby they stay out of my way in the daytime, and I stay out of their way at nighttime. Seems to work ok :)

EnglishRose13 · 03/09/2018 20:42

Waiting for me in the bath. I hate them.

False widows are an invasive and should be destroyed

QueenOfCatan · 04/09/2018 06:17

I had my first big spider yesterday too! I'm fine with them but the initial shock when they appear out of nowhere makes me properly jump, huge bastards!

QueenOfCatan · 04/09/2018 06:20

Does anybody else always have them appear from towels? Yesterday's came from a pile of tea towels I was folding, last years first big one came from my bath towel as I was trying to dry and I've had a few more appear from various towels over the years!

OneStepSideways · 04/09/2018 08:00

Queen that's not a spider it's a Harvestman (don't touch or squish as they release skin irritants).

Does everyone realise most of the spiders you're finding haven't come in from outside? Most were born in your house and have been living out of sight, eating all the flies/wasps/beetles/woodlice. You only see them in the autumn because the males come out of hiding to find females!

OneStepSideways · 04/09/2018 08:01

Queen actually it is a spider (giant house spider) sorry I was looking at the wrong photo!

ShatnersBassoon · 04/09/2018 08:05

My cat is a master spider catcher. It's brilliant, until she eats them very slowly, holding eye contact with me, eight desperate legs squirming out of the side of her mouth 🤢

GreenPillow · 04/09/2018 08:12

I had one INSIDE my top yesterday just nonchalantly walking all over my skin. I may have shouted to DH for assistance whilst frantically ripping my clothes off. He probably thought his luck was in until I shrieked "get the spider off me!!" bleurgh!!

EvilRingahBitch · 04/09/2018 08:21

The DC were alone in the house yesterday and found a socking great hunting spider in my duvet. (Yes they are old enough to be left alone, yes they are allowed in my bedroom) They bravely ran away, shut the door and barricaded the bottom edge with pillows until I came home to deal with it. Gee thanks kids.

UpstartCrow · 04/09/2018 08:24

Does anybody else always have them appear from towels?

One laid an egg sac on a towel that was hanging up. Fortunately I have a special spider noise so the family knew to run away. Bastards.

whippetwoman · 04/09/2018 08:34

I had an epic spider in the bathroom yesterday. It was too big for a glass so I had to get a bowl Shock To get it to move out of the corner of the room I had to shoot it with a water pistol and then it came running at me. Ejected it in the end but still feeling slightly traumatised now...

wink1970 · 04/09/2018 09:00

Is it me, or are they bigger this year?

One bit me in my sleep a few months back; 2 puncture marks near the watch strap, which flamed a little bit no massive harm done. It died of alcohol poisoning a little while later

mammmamia · 04/09/2018 09:08

I had first big one yesterday as well, it was under the laundry basket. dC asleep and DH away. I stood over it for ten minutes freaking out and eventually ejected it with glass and magazine while my dinner went cold Hmm

YoloThankfully · 04/09/2018 09:14

I'm getting itchy and paranoid just reading these

CandidaAlbicans · 04/09/2018 11:14

We have a large spider that lives in one of the corners of the roof lantern we have in our kitchen. We leave that corner undisturbed. It’s sort of a family pet now

I used to have a big house spider that lived in my bathroom and would sit on the corner of the bath and watch me on the loo. I used to say hello to her every time. Then she suddenly disappeared and my Mum said she'd found her dead. I felt quite sad to be honest. RIP "Bathroom Spider" Sad

Currently trying to "train" a young cellar spider not to make it's home in the bath rack. I keep moving it out of the danger area and the next day it's back. It almost got showered on the other day when I didn't see it.

Hallouminati · 04/09/2018 11:38

I was folding up DSD's hoodie and had the hood part tucked under my chin when I saw what I thought was a loose thread. No, no it wasn't. The 'loose thread' moved and started crawling at high speed towards my face! It was HUGE! I am usually a very laid back person but when spiders scare me like that THEY MUST DIE!

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 04/09/2018 12:07

I'm not okay with spiders. I've tried, but I'm not. What I will always, always be grateful to MN for is the tip to keep a few of those spindly, non-horrible spiders in a quiet corner as they apparently take out the bigger ones.

Someone will know what they're called. And now I'm probably hiding this thread. Grin
