It just seems unnecessary when they are just upsetting theirselves and spoiling it for other people.
I’m talking
“What’s your favourite treat food from the shops”
“Nothing. I live in a wooden crab infested shack and only eat mouldy dog food and sprouts”
Or
“What funny/silly nonsense did your family do with you as a child”
“Well they string me up and beat me with birches, I don’t know if that counts”
I understand hard lives, and it’s not been a picnic personally but I (and I assume others) read cheerful threads as nice escapism and happy memories and these posters are upsetting their selves and others

@PersisFord, it's not bad, bit squidgier and less fluffy than normal. Tastes good though. Btw, I'm embarrassed I didn't recognise it sooner but I've just twigged where your user name is from and I love it.

FairyAnn · 09/09/2018 09:05

This thread is amazing 😁

But I have to ask, what is Zoflora? I feel I'm missing out here....

PhilomenaButterfly · 09/09/2018 09:11

I've already posted on the what my 3yo eats in a day one.

He's now 7, but it's just bigger quantities.

Breakfast: 3 chocolate pancakes

Snack: fruit at school

Lunch: school dinner, eg, roast chicken, roast potatoes, some kind of veg, gravy, cake, custard

Dinner: sausage pasta bake, Cornetto

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 09/09/2018 09:41

I was torn between laughing and crying at the GCSE threads.

One set of threads: DS has done well - he's got 23 nines, and a 7. We'll obviously be having the 7 remarked, and we're just trying to stay positive.

Cue loads 'oh dears' about the 8, and good wishes for the remark. And loads of pats on the back for the OP's parenting.

Second set of threads. DS was predicted straight nines, and has just got his results - 2 fours, and all the rest fails. He's devastated. I'm crying. Where can we go from here?

Cue: how dare you feel sad. You're obviously a tiger mother of the first order if you're upset about this. Anyway, your son's results are really good. No, of course you shouldn't talk to the school - it's obviously your fault as the mother.

No acceptance at all that parents are sad when things go wrong for their child.

PersisFord · 09/09/2018 15:09

greebo there must be a select group of Terry Pratchett, LM Montgomery aficionados here. I wanted to call one of my daughters persis but got outvoted. Second choice was Esmeralda (Weatherwax) also vetoed. Bet you would have let me if you were my DH!!

My 3 year old today has had Rice Krispies (“tiny little sugar bombs”) an organic cereal bar (don’t know if they are allowed) some milk (“human children don’t need cow’s milk”), a burger and 2 pieces of cake (at a party, is that ok) and is angling for more milk. It’s homemade vegetable soup for dinner though so in my eyes that cancels it all out!!

Also....it’s a Sunday, the sun is shining, he’s a kid, I want him to enjoy himself, I just don’t care that much!! All terrible excuses 😂

Pamdoo · 09/09/2018 19:00

Seriously, the upcycling thread, has to be one of the most ridiculous derails going

PersisFord · 09/09/2018 21:57

Ooh and “which children’s books do you hate?” Pages of whinging about David Walliams and Harry Potter....then Fun Sponge strikes!

elephantoverthehill · 09/09/2018 22:41

I need to catch up on the afore mentioned threads. Tbh they were not the sort of threads I would click on.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 10/09/2018 00:02

I thought of you lot when I saw the student one and that reply! Shock.

I'm probably a bit scuzzy by mn standards. Sleep naked, change the sheets once every two weeks, towels weekly, (3 sets of sheets, 3 sets of towels & not much spare cash or time) only use a sex towel during my period & shower once a day. Proud owner of a loo brush. I do iron a lot though, including bed sheets & I don't let my washing be darked on spider willy fodder so that might redeem me?

Pamdoo · 10/09/2018 07:01

then Fun Sponge strikes!

It's like there's some new rule on mumsnet where people are not allowed to discuss things they don't like.

SapphireSeptember · 10/09/2018 22:40

I love Harry Potter! Terrible I know! Grin

I also love Anne of Green Gables, and the Discworld series.

Ahem, now where was I? Oh yes... I've noticed it myself with threads I've started, one about lipsticks (oh, I never wear makeup,) one where I asked people which fictional character they'd spend the night in a haunted house with (ghosts aren't real) and a few others I can't recall the details of, possibly a Harry Potter one. obsessed Oh yes, and I'm part of the 'I hate summer' brigade and we got some snotty comments on our thread. I was miserable because of the heat for weeks, luckily I don't suffer from any medical conditions that worsen in a heatwave like some posters on there do! It was our support thread, not for bossy types to come and moan at us for not enjoying 30+ temperatures!

Thank you for this thread OP, it has been truly fun to read!

I don't have kids either...

toffee1000 · 11/09/2018 01:14

OK, I have a question.

I understand being irritated by threads like the OP mentioned, "what fun things did your family did when you were little" "oh we were all beaten with pointy sticks", but I was just thinking about the student thread. Surely a question like "do you miss university" will invite some who'll say no? Or is it just the negativity of some posters? I'd find it a little odd to read a thread asking "do you miss university" where everyone said they did.

Interestingly, the beauty advent calendars thread in S&B did attract one poster complaining about "consumerism" and "not needing plastic tubs of gunk" as the first response, but everyone told them off for moaning, and it was the only such response on the thread.

Gettingbackonmyfeet · 11/09/2018 03:16

It's not people disagreeing it's the need to be unashamedly excessive in doing it

If someone posted " nope bloody hell glad to be free of bloody 20p laundrettes and the crap beer" no problem , it's in the spirit of the thing

When someone posts a dramatic over the top comment that is designed to bring down the light hearted mood to be sombre that's all about passive aggressive attention seeking and derails the thread and is just ridiculous

It's irritating and serves no other purpose then that person being frankly a bit of a dick

toffee1000 · 11/09/2018 04:18

Makes sense. I know the type you mean.

penisbeakers · 11/09/2018 04:34

@Baumederose Aye. BECAUSE we were poor. My old Dad used to say to me, 'Threads don't buy you happiness.'

MNsplaining · 11/09/2018 05:36

'Does anyone miss being a student?' was the title, with an OP about how she misses it - it's inviting people to do the same. Anyone miss it like I do? is the premise.

It didn't say 'do YOU miss being a student?' which would invite comments from anyone whether they do or not.

It's like going on to a thread 'anyone else love pizza?' (with an OP about how much they love it) to say how much they hate it, it makes them sick or it killed their dog. If it said 'do you like pizza?' thats inviting opinions.

I really don't understand why they do it. You see it all the time on threads. E.g 'anyone else love Christmas?' and people can't wait to post about how much they hate Christmas, how shit it is, how it's commercialised and a waste, they want to ban it and it's awful for them because their family died.

The OP wants to talk about how excited other people are, reminisce and share happy memories. Not hear from posters saying Peter Sutcliffe ruined their Christmas.

StripySocksAndDocs · 11/09/2018 05:37

I also am a failure by mn standards, don't shower a minimum of two times a day, have a loo brush (admittedly don't use, it's in a fancy stand- my mother in law bought it for me (as you do) - it, is that worse?)

Also I am a failure on here. As I haven't a clue what the student one is, nor the upcycling one.

I was however just amused (and reminded about this thrrad) on a thread about Kirsty Whasit (wrote Allen just, but I know that's wrong!!); informed it was light hearted in the op, third poster wasn't amused. Admittedly though, I've no clue what the thread is actually about.

I can only conclude that I'm generally clueless and unaware!!

MNsplaining · 11/09/2018 05:43

Stripy - the student one the OP asked 'does anyone miss being a student' and shared happy memories, inviting others to do the same..

The first reply was 'No. I was a student in Leeds during the Yorkshire Ripper years. It was scary and impacted on our social lives significantly.'

StripySocksAndDocs · 11/09/2018 05:51

Ha! Really?!! Did they do a side line in prostitution during their student years. I can understand the fear is they did.

That's another thing I get muddled up/confused by: the Yorkshire Ripper, i think people are refering to Jack the Ripper. Get temporarily confused as why it's being referred like it was modern day. Though I'm probably just showing my privilege aren't I, having lived through the fear of him in my student years (Got 'the fear' a few times when i was a student. Wonder if that counts)

MNsplaining · 11/09/2018 06:04

It proved the point of this thread beautifully Smile

Pamdoo · 11/09/2018 06:47

Surely a question like "do you miss university" will invite some who'll say no? Or is it just the negativity of some posters? I'd find it a little odd to read a thread asking "do you miss university" where everyone said they did

It's not even the disagreeing, it's just people going OTT and killing the vibe. Also the shock of just how upset people can get over a simple subject such as upcycling or university! Grin

Pamdoo · 11/09/2018 06:50

Also I am a failure on here. As I haven't a clue what the student one is, nor the upcycling one

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3360437-to-think-that-a-lot-of-upcycling-is-bollocks

Gardai · 11/09/2018 07:59

Interestingly enough I went to uni just after Peter Sutcliffe was caught and my student House was very very close to the red light area. The crimes came out as I was a student, it meant we were very conscious of our safety. This was in Sheffield. I still enjoyed being a student, back in the 80's. Sheffield was an amazing place to be a student in the 80's.

Now, onto other matters where the thread police come out in droves...What's this obsession with not calling or visiting a doctor EVER ? If someone says AIBU to call the doctor they are told NO and yet if a rat farts on their aga it's "call the police and log it".
Also a recent one was to always allow student doctors see all your procedures and if you don't you are selfish and responsible for the decline of the nhs.

Gettingbackonmyfeet · 11/09/2018 10:26

Oh yeah I saw the student doctor one....it swung between " you must allow all and sundry to view your..in fact rent a hall or the fate of the entire medical system is in doubt" to " how could you ever consider letting a man anywhere near you (even if its an ingrowing toenaill and you dont mind in the slightest )it's a violation of all that is sacred " Hmm (or at least it had when I have up on it)

It's the lack of belief that people simply might have reasonable and different preferences . It's all terribly catastrophising

By mn standards I think I've failed feminism , failed my DC and possibly failed at being a human being and i have a sneaking suspiscion I may have contributed to the end of days sorry about that all...my bad Grin....oddly enough I'm alright with that

I wonder if I get a certificate Grin ooh or a medal

PersisFord · 12/09/2018 20:08

We all deserve medals for being NORMAL

Does anyone else here ever click on threads like “I saw some awful behaviour in Tesco today” just to make sure it’s not about them?!?
