....wrapping paper
Cards
Handbags
Post
Plastic tat from party bags and McDonalds or pocket money spends
Batteries
Magazines / books that are on the go
Shoes that are almost constantly in use
On the back of my life hacks thread I’m realising I’ve no “home” for so many things
This is just a quick list after having wine but is by no means limited to just this. Surfaces seem to be covered with crap all the time and I can’t clean mess
Help!

A wrapping paper tip I read on here (but don't use yet) is to wrap everything in silver wrapping paper because it is suitable for everyone, any age, any occasion and means you only need one roll of wrapping paper.

I think I would still have to have some dedicated Christmas wrapping paper though .

legocardsagain · 01/09/2018 21:49

...wrapping paper
I have a tall thin box in the cupboard under the stairs that all the rolls of wrapping paper can slip in to.

Cards
I have a file box of cards for all occasions, kept in the same cupboard as our important documents (wills, passports etc) file box.

Handbags
I have a plastic storage tower in the cupboard under the stairs. 2 drawers for handbags, 1 for winter gloves, scarves and hats etc.

Post
I open over the recycling bin and everything I don't need goes in there. Everything I do need, goes in to a large plastic box with suspension folders in it.

Plastic tat from party bags and McDonalds or pocket money spends
A shoe box kept out of reach. Tat is soon forgotten and you can either redeploy the same tat when needed or donate to a charity shop/school fair fodder.

Batteries
Dead ones go in a ziplock bag that is labelled.
Unused in another ziplock bag in the same cupboard as the birthday cards

Magazines / books that are on the go
Ones you are currently reading? I have 1 book upstairs on bedside table, 1 downstairs next to sofa. Whichever I'm nearest to when I get 5 mins is the one I start reading. We don't really buy magazines but would probably keep in the same places as books.

Shoes that are almost constantly in use
I have a collapsible washing basket in the front hall. All shoes get thrown in there. If they are in constant use, they'll be at the top still.

MPForFlydaleNorth · 01/09/2018 21:50

Wrapping paper, gift tags ribbons etc are in a dress bag hanging up in the spare room wardrobe
Batteries in the toolbox in the kitchen cupboard and bedside table drawer upstairs along with bulbs for the bedside lamps in case they go at night
Cards I make myself, so I have a list of birthdays/anniversaries etc for the year on the wall that I can add to if necessary and make most the month before I need them, plus a batch of generic kids/adult cards in a plastic box for emergencies - and I've started on my Christmas cards this weekend so they will all be done by the end of November and stored in my craft area until needed

kaytee87 · 01/09/2018 21:51

wrapping paper - buy as I need it
Cards - buy as I need them
Handbags - top of wardrobe
Post - file or shred
Plastic tat from party bags and McDonalds or pocket money spends - don't have any yet, DS is only 2.
Batteries - 'junk' drawer in kitchen.
Magazines / books that are on the go - beside bed
Shoes - bottom of wardrobe and shoe rack down the side of wardrobe

TroubledLichen · 01/09/2018 21:53

Wrapping paper - don’t need it, except at Christmas as other times I give gifts in bags instead as I’m lazy, if anything is left after Xmas it goes into the basement storage with the decorations
Cards - if it’s for someone else I buy and then give it to them, cards we’ve received stay out for a week or so and are then recycled
Handbags- one in use on the coat hook, others in the wardrobe
Post- open it then immediately chuck it or file it
Plastic tat from party bags and McDonalds or pocket money spends- this crap all makes it way to the bin
Batteries- drawer in the kitchen
Magazines / books that are on the go- don’t buy magazines, books live on the coffee table/bedside table then go back to the bookshelf
Shoes- on a rack by the door

thenightsky · 01/09/2018 21:55

Wrapping paper - in an Ikea box that fits in a Billy Unit.
Handbags - on a row of coat hooks behind the dressing room door.
Plastic tat - Kids grown up so all in the bin.
Batteries - Desk drawer in home office
Shoes - Ikea end of bed Malm blanket boxes.

LinoleumBlownapart · 01/09/2018 22:03

wrapping paper - in the back of my wardrobe
Cards - in a draw of stationary stuff in my desk
Handbags - I don't
Post - in an ikea post/desk tidy thing
Plastic tat from party bags and McDonalds or pocket money spends - in the kids rooms if they want it, otherwise it leaves my house quickly I hate plastic tat.
Batteries - in a fabric box in a draw in the kitchen where all those type of things live (elastic bands, I am 5 badges, cake candles etc)
Magazines / books that are on the go - on each person's bedside table or shelf
Shoes that are almost constantly in use - no where for these, they are usually by the back door but there can be no more than two pairs of the go. Or I put them at the bottom of the wardrobes.

DarkLikeVader · 01/09/2018 22:05

Oh god, I struggle massively with hoardy tendencies inherited from both parents so here goes
....wrapping paper - drawer in massive wardrobe in child’s room
Cards o have a file box for these on a bookshelf
Handbags - one handbag on coat hook in utility, fancy going out handbag in bottom of my wardrobe
Post - post to go on sideboard by door, post coming in on bottom step unless for me then I open and deal with immediately
Plastic tat from party bags and McDonalds or pocket money spends - played with then in bin immediately it’s been discarded - I hate this stuff. Pocket money toys dd has to put away or they are binned
Batteries - Tupperware in kitchen drawer
Magazines / books that are on the go - magazines are read then recycled, I no longer have one on the go or it turns into three/four/more on the go, books on the go live on the bedside table or in the summer on the cupboard in the sitting room, otherwise on bookeshelf or library bag if finished with
Shoes that are almost constantly in use - I have an old bookshelf for these in the utility room. Shoes must be put away after use or otherwise they mess with robot hoover!

Hope this helps a bit?

Polkapjs · 01/09/2018 22:10

....wrapping paper - cupboard under the stairs
Cards - in the French dresser
Handbags - in the wardrobe
Post - letter holder onto of French dresser
Plastic tat from party bags and McDonalds or pocket money spends - we have the very popular shelving unit from ikea with the boxes
Batteries - draws of French dresser
Magazines / books that are on the go - on coffee table
Shoes that are almost constantly in use - shoe rack on back of door of the cupboard under the stairs

This makes my house sound quite tidy but with 2 boys my house always looks messy Sad

DarkLikeVader · 01/09/2018 22:17

We have a kallax unit! It has mostly toys and some craft stuff but unfortunately the two kids are incapable of tidying up into t unless I go round with a charity shop bag, that galvanises them 😆

CherryPavlova · 01/09/2018 22:21

Cards - mainly wit husbands PA but personal notecards in a writing bureau.
Handbags - in a shelf in one of the wardrobes.

Post - on console table in the entrance hall until read.
Plastic tat from party bags and McDonalds or pocket money spends -N/A
Batteries - in the tool drawers in the shed.
Magazines / books that are on the go - beside bed or in lavatories.

CrunchieFriday · 01/09/2018 22:22

Wrapping paper attic storeroom before I had an attic I stored it under my bed.
Cards ? I don't???
Handbags In my wardrobe on top shelf
Post I file the necessary ( I have box files on a shelf) bin the rest It lives for a moment ( 2 days max) in the kitchen but I hate clutter, so it doesn't stay there for long!
Plastic tat from party bags and McDonalds or pocket money spends I never, ever visit McDonalds. We do get plastic tat - it goes in an IKEA drawer with the rest of the toys. If it gets too full, plastic tat is culled ( and sent to charity shop or recycling)
Batteries: In plastic box in a cupboard
Magazines / books that are on the go coffee table in the sitting room. Donate the rest ( save a few articles in a box file occasionally)
Shoes that are almost constantly in use Shoe rack by the door

TroysMammy · 01/09/2018 22:23

Wrapping paper in a long plastic lidded box

Cards, I make them so in plastic baskets, written and addressed in month order.

Handbags not in use in a wardrobe in the spare room
Post, bills put by the computer for paying, junk straight in recycling bag.

No plastic tat, no children.

Batteries in a clip top lidded box marked Batteries, on a shelf in the utility room, next to similar boxes marked Tealights, First Aid, Lightbulbs and Candles.

Magazines on the go, on the settee or the floor. Older magazines in plastic lidded boxes marked Gardening, Cross Stitch, Card Making.

Shoes, where I take them off or where I've left my slippers.

Poodletip · 01/09/2018 22:27

wrapping paper - top of dresser.
Cards - (assuming ones to be given rather than ones received) on a bookcase.
Handbags - bottom of wardrobe.
Post - largely on the stairs (not ideal).
Plastic tat from party bags and McDonalds or pocket money spends - the children either decide they want to keep it and find space in their room or I chuck it in the bin.
Batteries - in the bottom of a kitchen cupboard.
Magazines / books that are on the go - here there and everywhere.
Shoes that are almost constantly in use - shoe shelf in hall.

FreeButtonBee · 01/09/2018 22:28

Commonly used shoes in two gorilla buckets under the coat rack. They are nice brightly coloured ones, very light and easy to clean

Cards - unused in a large box in the lower part of our living room shelves alcoves. Cards received are forced into a box and then sorted in the loft as a fire hazard. I don’t keep much else so am okay with keeping cards

Handbags in those cream sort of woven Ikea baskets under the bed

Plastic tat is ruthlessly culled. The second it breaks its binned. If it’s likely to cause an argument (between two 5 yo and a 3 yo) it gets binned. If it will stain/explode/require my input, it gets binned. Otherwise it will get sorted and stored with similar items so cars/teddies/animals/stickers etc

Post sits on the counter of the alcove shelves until read, goes on the desk if it needs to be actioned and into a magazine rack if it needs to be filed. Filing is done about once a year. Otherwise straight to recycling when opened. Vouchers go into my A5 plastic wallet in my handbag and I do a full every 3 months or so of the out of date ones.

wonkylegs · 01/09/2018 22:34

....wrapping paper - in a semi see through drawstring bag, I made specifically for the purpose from an old chiffon curtain, tucked under our bed.
Cards - I have a set of wooden drawers from IKEA which have envelopes, cards & writing paper in, they sit on a shelf in my study
Handbags - all over the bloody place but they are supposed to be in my wardrobe
Post - have a shelf by the door with phone, notepad, pot of pens & post
Plastic tat from party bags and McDonalds or pocket money spends - ikea Kallex(sp?) unit with square boxes, all toys go in there in family room, every now and they I sort through & throw / recycle the worst of it
Batteries - in drawer in sideboard
Magazines / books that are on the go - magazines on side table in living room, books on the go next to the bed.
Shoes that are almost constantly in use - in a pile next to the door, keep trying to implement new solutions but they just come back. I've given up fighting it.

ToastyFingers · 01/09/2018 22:38

Cards
With the stationary on a high shelf in a kitchen cupboard

Handbags

In a drawer of a kallax unit in my bedroom. The one in use stays hung on the pram, which isn't of much use to you unless you have small children

Post
In a little set of stackable plastic trays from pound land, on top of the shoe stand in the hallway closest to the front door.

Plastic tat from party bags and McDonalds or pocket money spends
Smaller kinder egg-esque tat is stored in a jewellery box in dds bedroom, larger stuff in another kallax drawer in the kids room.

Batteries
In the drawer of shite in the kitchen.

Magazines / books that are on the go
On the top shelf of a bookshelf in the living room

Shoes that are almost constantly in use
On a repurposed bookcase in the hallway closest to the front door. Was cheap and cheerful from Ikea and holds shoes/wellies/sandals/boots for all four of us with ease.

ToastyFingers · 01/09/2018 22:48

This is everyone's shoes stored neatly(ish) on what I believe is a 'billy' bookcase. I think it cost less than £20.
(pic attached hopefully)
Occasional shoes the heels or smart shoes are in each person's wardrobe

Toombumber · 01/09/2018 23:00

We have a receptacle called The Basket of Small Things, where small toys, pieces of toys, dolls shoes etc go. Not things that have another home, like Lego bricks but the random small bits (Macdonalds toys would be the biggest things in the there). if someone's looking for a particular small item (I once had to scour the whole house for a single shark tooth), there's a fair chance it'll be in there.

Joinourclub · 01/09/2018 23:00

Wow TroysMammy , you sound like a professional organiser, come and organise my house please!

Toombumber · 01/09/2018 23:03

We converted the downstairs loo by the front door into a cloakroom with masses of pegs and shoe shelves, and a clear perspex front to the shelf that held gloves, mini umbrellas, and knee pads etc so we could see what was there.

Toombumber · 01/09/2018 23:05

I would quite like to have a box called 'Don't Know' to put as yet unidentified objects, and other bits and bobs that get left on windowsills and you don't know if you'll want them or not.
